    RIPU Bhatia feels he has had a second chance at life after surviving meningococcal septicemia. At the age of just 21, Ripu, from Auckland, New Zealand, contracted the blood infection which resulted in the loss of his nose, upper lip and the amputation of his legs and arms. Ripu could not look in the mirror for a long time and lost a lot of confidence. After 250 days in hospitals and a rehab centre, Ripu adapted to these massive physical changes and has gradually rebuilt his confidence. Now, the 27-year-old has fulfilled his dreams of becoming a journalist and feels his experiences serve him well in this role. While he is smashing life career-wise, Ripu wants to get back into exercise, having not been swimming in years since his rehabilitation sessions. Now, he is ready to get back in the pool and this time, with a friend. Ripu told Truly: “To come so close to death and emerge as a physically different person and mentally different, in a lot of ways, is a significant change, to put it lightly. And I do feel I've got a second chance in life.”

      I've seen an older video about him in which he was still processing what he was going through, and he expressed a great deal of unhappiness, which at the time I appreciated hearing as sometimes watching these videos makes me feel bad about myself having a chronic illness and not being able to put on a positive face all or most of the time. But it's great to see that he's in a better place mentally and emotionally now.

      I can't agree more, @lucid life comes in different stages, we all need to go through it, it's the only way, but I think that this is inspirational for sure but as you sad about the previous video, these two together show reality, it's okay not to be okay and it's okay to be okay no matter what your mental or physical health is. I can imagine kids watch this and find hope and courage, I can imagine teenagers watch this even adults. And I can only think about one conclusion: life isn't about being happy all the time but about how you deal with the things that come across your path. It's this that shapes you through time, just remember you are enough and worth living! 💛🌻

      Este chico es un ejemplo de lucha y de superación, eso es lo que hay que ver.
      Y que vale mucho....es un campeón.

      Ripu has a sad, yet inspiring journey! You’re valid by however you feel, because it’s how you feel. I see how this video abt. Ripu could make someone realize how good they really have it. That doesn’t mean how you feel is invalid, no matter how silly you find your problems. Keep pushing on!

    • @pinkmonkeybird2644
      @pinkmonkeybird2644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      May I ask a question @Clint Waltman? I mean no disrespect; I just want to hear your perspective. I’m paralyzed and have used a wheelchair since I was a kid. I have had a number of extensive surgeries and illnesses, and I’ve been close to death many times. But, I feel so lucky that I’m still alive and truly enjoy my life just as it is. My question to you is, why do you compare your suffering to anyone else’s misfortune?
      People have told me over the years that they aren’t strong enough to live through what I have, and it always makes me very uncomfortable. Like, is my life so horrible that no one would want to live the way I do? Why are people saying I’m brave or inspirational when all i did was stay alive? That’s not exactly discovering cold fusion or solving world hunger; all I did was keep breathing, one breath at a time (or some times I didn’t even do that, a machine breathed for me). Finally, what was my alternative? I could either life my life in a wheelchair and find purpose and joy, or I could give up. That’s kind of cowardly, I think.
      Bottom line if it is too long: why do you think your problems are silly just because someone has different challenges? All life is hard, and everyone has a story to tell. Very few people have an enchanted life, and your life and your troubles are important to you, so why do you compare them to someone else instead of acknowledging that today is a struggle?
      I hope I have not offended, that was not my intention at all.

    • @greygooselavajuice9150
      @greygooselavajuice9150 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@pinkmonkeybird2644 I think what’s inspiring to me is dealing with a circumstance that’s not the most positive & instead of giving up you kept pushing through to see better days. Even if all you could do was breathe, you did so, I’m grateful you had a machine to help you breathe as well. To go through the mental & physical pains of your hardship to see, feel, and become a positive outcome. Maybe some people couldn’t imagine going through what you’ve been through so they think they’re not strong enough. But seeing you go through your challenges and coming out alive and happy is wonderful. That doesn’t mean your life is horrible. It doesn’t matter if people would want to live the way you do. Forget what other people think. If you’re happy with yourself, that’s all that matters.

    • @dante6985
      @dante6985 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@pinkmonkeybird2644 You have not offended me at all. I actually quite appreciated your comment and your insights. I compare myself with others out of habit: I'm envious of those I perceive have it easier (better looking, higher paying, more prestigious jobs), and grateful that I don't have it as hard as some (chronic pain, homeless, difficult domestic situation, etc). I think some of this is human nature, but it's not helpful. I need to be mindful that my story is unique, beautiful in its own way, and instead of aiming for a happy ending (where I get x, y, and z which would make my life somehow complete) I should aim for a happy process.

    • @pinkmonkeybird2644
      @pinkmonkeybird2644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@dante6985 Thank you for such a thoughtful reply; I really do appreciate your comments. I think you’ve got a whole lot of insight and emotional resiliency, even though you may think otherwise at times. It does help me think about my own experiences in a new light, as does @Blayn e. I think perhaps I’ve shortchanged those who gave me oblique praise, at least in my own mind. I’d never tell anyone they were rude for saying such things to me. I get that it’s not always a negative comment about my life’s quality, but an acknowledgment that I’ve hit some rough patches that others have not.
      I’ve always believed that, since none of us are promised tomorrow, we should make as much peace with today as we can. But that doesn’t mean we should never be sad, angry, or upset. Those are just as valid as joy and contentment, and it’s important to allow ourselves to feel honestly. I think maybe that’s why I reacted to your comment, because I thought you weren’t allowing yourself to process your emotions honestly, but now I see I was wrong. We all struggle with grief, jealousy, despair at times because we are human. Learning how to acknowledge them without giving in to them is a sign of growth and resiliency. You’ve already got that figured out.
      Thank you, I really do appreciate your sharing your thoughts with a complete stranger. I wish you well on your journey through life.

      A big part of why acquiring disabilities is so hard on people, psychologically, is because our societies view disabled and chronically ill people as less-than. When we're suddenly faced with all the negative things we've been conditioned to think about disabled people applying to ourselves, it can be one hell of an identity crisis. But the vast majority of what abled society thinks of disabled people isn't remotely true.
      There's also the simple fact that if you're lucky enough to live long enough to grow old, your health will decline. But whatever a person's age, disability and chronic illness are as much a part of being human as anything else.
      Disability is normal and it doesn't have to be the end of the world. In all honesty, abled people and abled society make my life far more difficult than my disabilities and chronic illnesses ever have.

    It’s shows like these that make me thankful for the body I have. I am thankful that I have all my limbs, working hands, perfect vision…all these things many people every day just take for granted and don’t appreciate them until one day you lose them. Be thankful for the body you have and what it can do. Do the things you always wanted to do and be happy with your lives because you never know when it can change. There is always someone out there in a less fortunate position than you so you should always be thankful for what you do have. Never forget that. 💕

    I’ve been disabled my whole life, though I wasn’t given diagnoses for most of my health problems until I was an adult. so many able-bodied people see disability as a tragedy or something that brings your life to a complete stop. But I genuinely think being disabled this one is the best things that’s ever happened to me, because of the perspective it gives me and the vibrant community I get to share. I appreciate this channel for highlighting other disabled people who feel that they are in many ways better off as a disabled person. Even dealing with chronic pain and chronic fatigue and the unpredictability of chronic illness in general, I wouldn’t wish to be “cured.”
