I want all my saw advice to come from a guy with 9 fingers. He obviously has some experience with saws and how they operate. Edit one year later- I cut the living shit out my hand at work on a miter saw. I literally cut my thumb halfway off. So do what you will with that information.
A lot of videos that show supposedly better ways of doing something are usually the same as far as time taken, and results generated. Some of them are a total waste of time, and are not always the safest to perform. Having spent years doing residential renovations you learn to make a lot of your own tools, and come up with some incredible techniques. Rarely are any brilliant, but this one definitely hits the mark, especially if you don't have time to go to a store, or else they're closed. This I will definitely put to good use. Thanks for posting this.
Yeah, all you have to have is pieces of wood that will fit through the holes, clamps, a drill with drill bits, and wood to drill the hole in. Seems like just buying dowels is a more brilliant idea and less waste of time.
@@ceedogg4270 having spent decades doing all types of renovations and having to McGiver things that you can't purchase. I found that I can use this technique to make specific dowel diameters not available on the shelf. And being able to make a dowel that requires a different diameter on each end. This is easy to build, I use my table saw for cutting the recesses for the jigsaw blades, much quicker.

I can definitely say if i need dowel on the job in the future the time saved by not having to drive to the store will definitely eclipse the effort required to do this on the job. On top of that the option as stated above to create a specific custom diameter is also invaluable in certain situations. This was a very useful video for me.

This is the first of the "brilliant trick" videos I have watched that actually is a brilliant idea. Make all the dowels you want. Ingenious. Congratulations.
It's a creative idea, but really only useful if you want to make a non standard dowel. If you don't have any particular need for a special size or material dowel, then the cost of the material you're using to make dowels is going to be multiple times more than simply buying them.
I'm not going to lie I usually pass on these kinds of videos because they are sometimes ridiculous but this is pretty smart and I'm going to use it, I have a bunch of old jigsaw blades and I use dowels all the time repairing guitars and furniture. This is great because you can run the drill index in dowel sizes. Nice job man!

For example diy lathe the dude actually uses a lathe to make it, this though definently would use but with a couple tweaks/mods I would make it into a table so you wouldn't have to clamp every time also I see the versatility/eco-reuse factor of the spent/broken blades however for the table I mentioned above I would buy a large blade, you like the 12" or 16"ers probably Diablo or Irwin brand and cut into 3 inch pieces.....CHEERS

Just something i noticed. The blades you put in were facing the same direction. So when you put a rotation on the wooden dowel, only 1 blade is actually cutting. If you made the blades both face opposite difections(as in the cutting sides towards eachother. Then when you rotate make sure the rod rotates the same direction as the cutting teeth.
Maybe it's too aggressive with both cutting simultaneously, and the other one is more of just a bearing surface to keep things smoother and straighter. Would be interesting to see though.
If opposite directions meaning cutting teeth both always cutting into the wood, you WOOD 😆 not be able to start the dowel as the wood WOOD 😁 chatter and not get started. Therefor, having both blades face the same way, the wood will get a chamfer on one side and then the other blade takes the bite.
That's a good observation. I really liked the concept of the jig. The general concept is quite smart. Improvements are a trial and error. Kudos to the presenter, and to the innovator.
Cool idea if you're in a pinch & can't go to the store👍🏼...but it's also much easier & practical to just buy the right sized dowel...by the time you set this up, your time will cost more than the dowels you make.
Great idea, one thought I had was if it would work better/easier if you flip one of the saw blades around so the teeth are pointing the direction the wood is coming from. As the blades cut as they pull normally no both directions

Esta bien pensado pero a la larga No sirve. El acabado es áspero, no liso y la fricción del rozamiento entre el soporte y el listón redondeado acaba desgastando la base e incluso puede quemarse u arder. Una vase de metal con orificios es más fácil de hacer y duradera.

As you can see by my photo I'm a guitarist... I've seen a lot of guitarists do things that I couldn't even dream of doing, let alone attempt to do. However there's a whole lot of things in my life that I haven't seen or done. I've never jumped out of a plane with a parachute, however I have hang glided. I have motorcycled from Glendale, Arizona to Mount Vernon, Ohio on a 400 Suzuki one banger back in the '80s packing a piece on my hip for protection from two-legged and four-legged varmints looking for trouble, while I camped along the way.

This is probably one of the tricks I have never see before and I have learned a lot of them from many years doing woodwork. It surely will be one that I will use in the future and I don't have to have any broken blades to try it out.
I am an old school carpenter. This is a great trick to learn , all the makings of custom mortise joints any size infield on the spot . My next set of chairs I will expand on this method! Absolutely fascinating! Dowels all damn day. I suppose you could use one blade cut in two equal lengths for this matter as only 4 teeth on either blade seem to get action. I am headed to my little workspace in the garage to make my very own 'as seen on TH-cam' incredible, magic dowel making device! I am truly impressed. Keep up the good work! I think this qualifies as more a party trick sort of thing than useful most of the time. Having the scraps around that are the right size is hit or miss, and if you went out and bought the right size (or ripped something down), it might have been faster and more economical to just buy a dowel in the first place. I have two actual concerns though, the first is something others pointed out, the blades should be facing opposite, so it cuts on both sides, unless the second blade's purpose is to 'lift' away the material that is being removed? Secondly, those don't look like very straight dowels, I can see curve in the second and third one, so for precision work, I'd not want to use them. Still, interesting little hack.
Agreed. The difference could be the availability of dowels. I'm fortunate that in the US, I can get a dowel for less than a buck at Walmart. I can't say how available they are elsewhere
I just thought about grabbing a 2x4 that’s laying around, make a bunch of 1/4in diameter wooden sticks on a table saw, so for every foot of 2x4 I would have 84 sticks. In an 8ft 2x4 I could get 672 of them. Paint them, drill tiny holes at each end and string them together on some fishing line . Make like 10 place mats for a table. Something like that, or curtains ?
@@xXelitegpXx Have subtract kerf thickness for every cut. (width of the blade. basically accounts for the huge pile of sawdust you woulf end up with.) probably close to 1/3 of the 2x4 would end up as sawdust.
@James Patrick reciprocating saw blades are mono directional cutters, if you look at them, they cut only on the 'draw', while the 'push' does little to nothing in terms of cutting, this is true of most saw blades. The exceptions are true triangles, like seen on a bow saw.
It would be great for matching specific types of wood for pins when you can’t buy the right species of wood dowel. Or when the nearest store is a 45 minute drive away.
Yea, I like this, gets my wheels spinning for projects that could use this method. Great for people that don't have a lathe and wanna make something happen.
I just declared myself a rating of the coolest tips that I have learned in life. Yes, LIFE I may not be the sharpest chisel, but I have seen & forgotten a million different ideas, BUT NONE QUITE LIKE THIS ONE! Usually, when I need a large dowel, I will rip an octagon shape on the table saw & go from there. How do you use dowels in repairing guitars? Just curious cus I was going to make one but was not thinking about possibly needing dowels

Nice! Wouldn’t you want the direction of the teeth to be in opposite directions so they “cut” on each side? Maybe it’s just me but looks like they’re both pointing in the same direction.. I guess that simulates the back and forth of the saw, or something to do with clearing out the dust?🤷♂️
No you're right, it would work better with teeth pointing in opposite directions, those blades only cut on the stroke where the point leads.

If opposite directions meaning cutting teeth both always cutting into the wood, you WOOD 😆 not be able to start the dowel as the wood WOOD 😁 chatter and not get started. Therefor, having both blades face the same way, the wood will get a chamfer on one side and then the other blade takes the bite.
Clearing out the dust debris I'm betting, either way a brilliant way to fab your own color/wood matching dowels!

Maybe it worked better this way. Maybe they bit the wood too much like that and this somehow solves it.

Absolutely fascinating! Dowels all damn day. I suppose you could use one blade cut in two equal lengths for this matter as only 4 teeth on either blade seem to get action. I am headed to my little workspace in the garage to make my very own 'as seen on TH-cam' incredible, magic dowel making device! I am truly impressed. Keep up the good work! Very handy if you need an odd sized dowel. I used to just turn them on a metal lathe when I had access to a lathe.
Material cost in making this handy gadget: ZERO
Cost of metal lathe: 3 thousand dollars.
I think this qualifies as more a party trick sort of thing than useful most of the time. Having the scraps around that are the right size is hit or miss, and if you went out and bought the right size (or ripped something down), it might have been faster and more economical to just buy a dowel in the first place.
I have two actual concerns though, the first is something others pointed out, the blades should be facing opposite, so it cuts on both sides, unless the second blade's purpose is to 'lift' away the material that is being removed? Secondly, those don't look like very straight dowels, I can see curve in the second and third one, so for precision work, I'd not want to use them. Still, interesting little hack.
Agreed. The difference could be the availability of dowels. I'm fortunate that in the US, I can get a dowel for less than a buck at Walmart. I can't say how available they are elsewhere
I just thought about grabbing a 2x4 that’s laying around, make a bunch of 1/4in diameter wooden sticks on a table saw, so for every foot of 2x4 I would have 84 sticks. In an 8ft 2x4 I could get 672 of them. Paint them, drill tiny holes at each end and string them together on some fishing line . Make like 10 place mats for a table. Something like that, or curtains ?
@@xXelitegpXx Have subtract kerf thickness for every cut. (width of the blade. basically accounts for the huge pile of sawdust you woulf end up with.) probably close to 1/3 of the 2x4 would end up as sawdust.
@James Patrick reciprocating saw blades are mono directional cutters, if you look at them, they cut only on the 'draw', while the 'push' does little to nothing in terms of cutting, this is true of most saw blades. The exceptions are true triangles, like seen on a bow saw.
It would be great for matching specific types of wood for pins when you can’t buy the right species of wood dowel. Or when the nearest store is a 45 minute drive away.
Yea, I like this, gets my wheels spinning for projects that could use this method.

I just declared myself a rating of the coolest tips that I have learned in life. Yes, LIFE I may not be the sharpest chisel, but I have seen & forgotten a million different ideas, BUT NONE QUITE LIKE THIS ONE! Usually, when I need a large dowel, I will rip an octagon shape on the table saw & go from there. BUT, this extraordinary technique of making small dowels has topped my LifeTime LIST OF “Why didn’t u show me this 20yrs ago?” 👍 GREAT VIDEO Thanks4sharing

@@cdnlong1 scrap wood. I live 40 minutes from any hardware store. You learn to keep everything on hand. Try color matching.

La idea me parece genial y de echo voy a copiarla gracias, solo queria hacer una observacion, hay un pequeño error ya que las dos hojas los dientes estan orientados para el mismo lado por lo que solo una de ellas es la que hace el trabajo tendrian que estar enfrentados.

@@sergiosoto990 Me parece que no entendiste lo que es, es para fabricar tarugos para unir madera, las hojas de sierra lo que hacen es cortar la madera para darle la forma no evitar que se desgaste.

At my Jr high school shop class the shop teacher was doing a demo. For the class on what not to do ,and cut his thumb off on a radial arm saw , in front of the hole class of 7th graders !
