But in my case, the abuse WAS taken into serious account as a mitigating factor, and I was sentenced to 10 flat years, which I fully served and came home from last year. If it hadn't been such a gruesome way to do it (40 some strikes to his head), I would've gotten less, but the judge said he had to give me something due to how violent it was. I stand by it to this day, and certainly don't regret it. My family and I were freed of a very powerful and vile abuser who had terrorized us in every way for over two decades. Knowing what that was like, I completely empathize with the Menendez brothers. Actually, the media compared my own case to theirs when I was going through the court process. Long term abuse IS a mitigating factor, even for homicide, because of how deeply it can affect our judgement, fears, and triggers.
