I'm playing a super thematic spore druid in a campaign of Rime of the frostmaiden. A dwarf from the town of Goodmead who is a brewer, baker and cheesemaker. She does know her yeast and fungies. And with all the continual cold weather, all her production is at risk because nothing can grow and the fungi freeze to death...

I’ve had an idea for a character I would love to play. It’s a Dhampir Swarm Ranger and Spore Druid. With its swarm and spore cloud reflavored to a swarm of bats. It would be at 5-6 ranger levels and the rest spore Druid. Instead of raising dead in a spore zombie it’s a weak vampiric thrall.

My favourite character I ever got to play was a spore druid. His whole thing was he'd been posessed by a magical fungus that was growing out of him and he used the different mushrooms and spores produced from his body to cast different spells (e.g. crush one into a poultice for cure wounds, eat a different one for detect magic, etc)
Sadly that campaign didn't make it past level 2 so I really want to bring him back in a longer lasting campaign, especially when I get access to more thematic spells in later levels like blight

I'm about to play a summer eladrin Circle of Spores Druid, but I didn't take the usual route,. She's all about plants, poison, charm, dominating her enemies, controlling the battlefield and if necessary putting the smackdown on said enemies,. Although she can fight if necessary, she's more comfortable with spellcasting. Sure she'll Animate the dead if needed and spores are but she's also prepared to do without those abilities...

Right now I'm playing a circle of the spores druid called Mycelium and its so easy to the reflavor the druid spells in this darker theme. Fire spells can be flavored as spores and lighting them on fire, charming spells can be like spores that mess with your mind, Earth spells like thorn whip and entangle can be described as hyphae that restrain a target. It gives a darker theme yet is still just a druid. Really a recommendation to play in your next campaign.

In my current campaign, I recently multiclass the spore druid with a grave cleric. Symbiotic Entity makes these clerics a defensive healer. With Grave Cleric's Circle of Mortality, healing spell dies are at the max number whenever you cast it on party members with 0 HP.

This guide started out pretty good, but then you started talking about trying to focus on melee damage and multiclassing which are big mistakes IMO. You had it right when you were saying to focus on being a mid-range caster. That's where the strength of the spore druid is. I've played 2 full campaigns as a spore druid and tried to make melee work in the first. Spores has the best circle spell list of any druid by far. Symbiotic Entity makes you insanely tanky and scales fantastically. With SE you can get into ridiculous situations and come out unscathed. It's best to pre-cast SE early so you can be sure to have it up and not waste an action. The temp hp is all you really need. I would do it first thing when I woke up, because you never know when you'll walk out the door into a gelatinous cube (actually happened, everyone freaking out but I didn't have a scratch on me 'cause of SE).
Halo of spores and the melee damage are okay, but not worth sacrificing a round of setup. Delaying druid levels to multiclass is so painful. You put off spell level progression (Animate Dead really needs 4th level slots to build army), SE scaling, feats, features, etc. Rage? That nullifies your #1 feature: spellcasting. If you want to put out some nice damage, an army of skeletons throwing magic stones that you make for them will out-damage a spore druid that's multiclassed into martial classes. If you can make it to level 15, animated dead and animal shapes is one of the most bonkers combinations in the game.

    • @enterthedungeon
      @enterthedungeon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I believe I said in the video that I advise going straight Spores for all the reasons you listed. This is stuff to do if you wanted to multiclass. I agree, being a mid-range caster is stronger for spores. However, these are generally fun multiclasses that you can have. There really aren't any spellcasting classes that I'd say do much for spores so if you're a person that wants to multiclass, you're really only left with martials. But to each their own

I currently play a Circle of Spores druid named Isandro in a homebrew campaign with an undead race build. He's honestly one of my favorite characters I've ever played. We're currently playing Dead in Thay, and I just think it's hilarious because every time the party goes in and talks about killing the necromancers and undead, Isandro just goes- "AHEM!" It's also really funny that most of the party is relying on the undead for cure wounds.
Chill touch is SO useful in that campaign though, since it gives disadvantage to undead's attack rolls. Sadly my DM won't let me re-animate former undead and most of the enemies we're fighting are undead, so my Fungal Infestation is a little useless, but the halo of spores is such a great feature.
I've thought about taking a level in Rogue, I try to focus on both Int & Wis since I'm usually the one checking for traps in the party. I've got a pretty big proficiency bonus in perception & investigation as well.
He's also definitely a super unconventional druid, but I think it works really well. My DM actually let me pick up half-plate for him, because I told her "If your biggest issue with an undead druid is that he's wearing metal, I think there's a priority issue here" and it actually worked. With that and a cloak of protection that I also managed to get, his AC is 20, and that is a huge sigh of relief because I'm otherwise playing wizards and we all know how squishy those are. That and the ability to get temp HP in the first place makes me feel a lot more secure.

I lvoe classes where you can spice thing ups or "flavor them like thise class, many other druid, cleric, and all artificer classes on their spellcasting and explaining how their magic and connection to spores and stuff works. Renaming spells a bit to fit better (Faerie Fire is Fungal Fire with little glowing fungal spores clinging to things, Guardian of Nature forms became Primal Fungus & Great 'Shroom, and so on, and focus on necromancy spells is great!).
My druid was a drow half elf, which works great, giving me access to stuff like dancing lings, faerie fire, darkvision, and darkness, and choosing stuff like poisoin spray, infestation, that you can re-flavor is great!. I often combined the halo & symbiotic entity effects with mobility (using Longstrider and Guardian of Nature gives a stacked +20 speed), and also, you get an extra die (d6 force) damage with Guardian form, added to the symbiotic 2 extra damage die on a reaction, and the weapon + strength attack you can deal a creature the weapon damage (usually d6 or d8), plus the symbiotic damage plus the Guardian's extra die, you add the Halo's reaction and you can do like 5 die rolls aainst one creature on a weapon attack. Not the best, but okay, and then you can animate several creatures with fungal infestation. AWESOME, and the extra 4 HP per druid level you get is awesoem (Temp HP). Makes this for a good mele druidand I Would consider a greatclub for him, but the quarterstaff is okay and it lets you choose to add a shield to boost your AC OR use it two handed for chance to roll a d8 instead of d6. TTry to see if you can get a+1 or +2 staff, and its great. Love the flavoring! been haing fun with all these new Druid classes (WIldfire was "LITERALY" a blast, circle of star was a flexible druid that gets fly ability, along with either an extra bonus action attack I used a lot at earlier levels, the Healing form that lets you deal an extra 1d8 + WIS modifier (and I believe that increases at level 10?), and the Shepherd druid is also pretty awesome. DOn't know much about the Dreams druid, but looks flavorfull and interesting, and I thought the Land & Mood druid were already great!. Fun class. Druids may be my favorite D&D class!Though the Artificer subclasses give it a run for its money, and so do Clericks, which I had never played before. But looking at the various subclasses, they're great too. (Notice I like classes where I get to prepare spells daily, mostly b/c I am somewhat indecisive, and will change stuff all the time. Playing a Bard was first time I played class tyou didn't swap spells daily, and it was agonizing to me, though it was fun to play a WIld Magic sorcerer (mostly b/c DM Let me roll d20 to see if I had to roll on wild magic surge chart, and let me use Tides of Chaos as long as I had it and I'd get to roll d20 almost every time I used it... Makes for fun moments at the table)

I’m a madman when it comes to making characters and I’ve got one in the works that is 3lv swashbuckling rouge and 2lv. Of spores Druid. Odd mix but my halfling is shaping up to be a beast of a hit and runnner. Casting longstrider before combat and symbiotic entity at round one(+4 initiative) now you got 40movement and as long as you make an attack 1d8+2 (+1d6poison) +sneak attack(2d6) (let’s not forget halfling luck)you don’t provoke opportunities (even if you miss)from fancy footwork, so you can dash for another 40 or hide behind an ally and if they approach you roll halo of spores twice (2d6necrotic) with 8temp hp and AC 16 is not bad.

    • @douglasjager3554
      @douglasjager3554 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Uses rapier and shield, swashbuckler has reliable sneak attack on single targets even without advantage. Other spells on standby would be faerie fire as opener for advantage on clustered groups. Healing word in case, thunder wave to push away enemies in a pinch to escape with dash after.

I think that this subclass has some issues. They tried just a bit too hard to balance these abilities because they were messing with potentially dangerous powers, but they could have done better if they added debuffs to the halo of spores or had the 10th level ability interact with the zombies
Edit: I do think that the subclass can work well regardless though, as Druids are inherently very good

Hmm. If I play it again I'll have to keep some of this in mind. I tried playing one for a while, but between the halo of spores almost never succeeding (almost everything can beat a con save!), and that particular party only having one tank who missed a lot of games leaving me as the back-up front line, I did NOT have a good time playing this class at all. It sucked because out of combat the character was amazing, very unique and the party loved them. Everyone cried when I sent them away to play something else. But any time we got in combat I was miserable, because as I said my halo of spores never seemed to hit anything, and I'd lose my Symbiotic Entity about as quickly as I cast it.

I want to play this subclass as a tortle with emphasis on shillelagh and polearm master. I know its not optimal but I love the idea of being a melee druid without turning into an animal. Any tips or ideas? Im thinking of grabbing the feats polearm master, war caster, and potentially fey touched if I need to round out wisdom,
Or go heavy into strength and then do a single level dip into war domain cleric so I get the extra attack feature war priest as well as access to martial weapongs.

What I've learned about this subclass is that you can just pop Symbiotic Entity when you finish a long rest. You keep the temp HP all day, not just for the 10min. Before level 10, Symbiotic Entity is not a good ability to use in combat anyway. Halo of Spores is almost entirely unreliable since it targets CON saves, so doubling the damage die doesn't help much considering it puts you in a dangerous position to even use it. Also, you aren't going to be making melee weapon attacks as a Druid, so the d6 necrotic damage isn't helpful.
This is a caster druid. Pop the ability well in advance of combat, and walk around with a crap-ton of temp HP.
When you hit level 10, however, and gain Spreading Spores, then you can pop Symbiotic in combat, since you can then use your bonus action to throw the spore cloud around. It will feel a lot better to use at that point.
Considering this strategy, alongside the spell list, this subclass is awesome!

I've had the idea to play a spore druid for quite a while now. A druid who through the mentality of circle of spores becomes obsessed with death when he finds a book of necromancy from a long dead wizard. When he finds the book he cant stop reading and starts multiclassing towards the school of necromancy wizard like the author of the book. Its so fun to play this nonconforming character where he thinks he is functioning within the balance of nature while his magic becomes more perverse.

I agree with pretty much all of this. It's been established that you choose who gets effected by spores, so I think spreading spores should be targeted.

I want to like this subclass, but it just fails to deliver for me.
The zombies are weak and/or late to the party and the spores weak and short ranged.
Dipping monk or barbarian just makes you more M.A.D. and you wait longer for your spells, when simple druid spell casting is the strongest thing about this subclass.

I believe the subclass is good, but it is clunky as hell.
Spores Druid is about action economy and zone control.
*Halo of Spores* gives you a consistent use of your reaction for chip damage. (its basically free extra damage every round, as reactions are rarely of use for a druid)
*Animate Dead* gives your a use of your bonus action, with an extra body on the field.
*Fungal Infestation* gives you a free body that you can control freely, at no cost.
*Spreading Spores* frees up your reaction by creating a control zone that damages enemies (and possibly allies, yourself included) for free, at no cost of your action economy.
Notice, all of these creates continuous effects that helps you control an area while leaving your action, bonus action and reaction free for you to do whatever you want with them (unless you want to command your animate dead's zombies with your bonus action), and none of them use your concentration, leaving it free for you to get another powerful continuous effect going on.
Well, unfortunately as I mentioned, this subclass is really clunky, full of hiccups.
While you want to use Halo of Spores constantly to make it useful, it ends up clashing with the activation of Fungal Infestation, as it requires you to use your reaction exactly when the target dies, but you're likely to have used your reaction already, so you might end up missing the opportunity to use Fungal Infestation.
Symbiotic Entity is clunky in itself. It gives you thp and bonus melee dmg, which requires you to get close and personal to make use of, but it also ends if you lose those thp, and while they are pretty good for extra hp, they are not enough to be used as a "timer" for your most important feature. Well then you get the "option" to be a mid-range fighter/caster, but there is not enough range for that, 10ft is still effectively melee, as even on a Plant Growth field, the enemy will still be able to move 5ft towards you, and thats all they need to get in range to attack you, or they just need to have reach, and being 15ft away is not great, because now you not only miss on the melee dmg bonus, but also on the HoS damage (which needs to be ticking every turn to be useful, you know, cons save for no dmg doesn't help with consistency), now effectively making you just an tankier caster. There is also the use of an action to activate it while most other subclasses use a bonus action to get their gimmick going, and this is a subclass focused on action economy as I already pointed out.
In the UA version, HoS used to deal poison damage, and while a bad damage type, you could send your zombies/skeletons inside Spreading Spores to work with it, distracting enemies that are inside the aoe, without getting damaged and possibly dying, your features worked with each other. And I might be mistaken but I believe Spreading Spores can't be moved, you can only dismiss it and activate it again on a different place, altho i understand if thats the case, since SS is absolutely free damage and zone control.
Well, I think you can see what I mean when I say this subclass is clunky as hell, don't get me wrong, I love the abilities, and concept of having some sort of "aura" around you that affects the life essence of creatures inside it, but I wish they would smooth it out.
Increase the aoe of the features to 15ft, so you can truly play on mid-range, being able to stay just at the edge of the reach of an enemy, making HoS work better and play with other things available for druids, like difficult terrain and thorn whip, making FI less restricted to a small aoe, maybe SS would be too strong, if so, it could stay at 10ft. Also, changing Fungal Infestation to work on beasts/humanoids, inside the 15ft aoe, that died within the last minute or so, just so it doesn't make you hold out on the chip damage of HoS, or maybe simply removing the reaction cost. And changing Spreading Spores to not damage your zombies/skeletons (removing the friendly fire altogether would make it op).

Multiclassing is bad. You talk about not being in melee at the start and that halo of spores helps druid with their lack of reactions, but suggest on the multiclassing to drop wisdom, which doesn't make any sense. How are you using your reaction for halo of spores if your DC is like 13-14? Goliath is not a good choice at all. Stone Endurance is a *reaction* to use. You could multiclass with some cleric subclasses ( peace, light, life ) or a divine soul sorcerer ( or a lvl dip in cleric and sorc ). Straight spores druid is amazing as well, and you probably wanna get to lvl 5/6 before you multi class.

Goliath Spore Druid with a dip into barbarian....hmm
The image of going into rage and activating your spores is just *mwah*
And then I'd be tempted to take Pole Arm Master for the bonus action attack, and the focus on being a mid-range combatant.
But unfortunately, Pole Arm Master's attack of opportunity is just straight up better than using your spores. Same 10' range, deals 1d10+Strength+rage.
And double unfortunately, Halo of Spores isn't "an attack" so it doesn't extend your rage duration. Which, again, pushes you towards attacking with your weapon.
It's just a shame that the druid features don't mesh well. Halo of Spores is overshadowed, Symbiotic Entity takes your full action and is less powerful than on a straight druid....it's still not bad by any means. But you really want to be able to pre-cast your transformation. Without that, it doesn't feel like you get much.
It's still a VERY interesting build.
But I think Golaith Spore Druid with a dip into Monk would still be better. Still very strong, and seems easier to play thematically; the features don't clash.
