      WAY better than the P-Bass tone, in my opinion. I mean, P-Basses always sound pretty good, but they almost always sound just like that. Nothing particularly special about that one, other than being a bit clankier than average. The guitar, on the other hand, is absolutely top-notch.

  • @dennyrichards108
    @dennyrichards108 5 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    Sean's bass sounds fantastic and the trio is really on musically, but his tone works here because the other musicians are playing more sparsely. What I consider more "stock" Pbass tone is going to have more mids, which would be a better choice if there were more players and/or the mix was more dense.
    That having been said, I just figured out who Sean was earlier this year, and I'm a fan. Seems like a great guy, great player.

    Well golly gee whiz, that was just silly how GOOD they are. I'm an old dude who knows that bass tone well. I always called it mud whomp . In the old days the bass drum wasn't mic'ed for live gigs so that bass tone worked in conjunction with the bass drum to make a big sound for dancing. Hofners did the same thing. With the improvements in live sound with sub woofers, that all changed the role of bass tones.

    • @dwightdawson3578
      @dwightdawson3578 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why does everyone refer to Jamerson when they are referring to the First Lady of Bass Carol Kaye? She taught Jamerson, Donald “Duck”Dunn and that chick from Talking Heads just to name two. She was the fingers AND picks behind the “Motown” sound until she sent her student to fill in while she was hospitalized. No disrespect for Jamerson but Carol is the backbone for that tone. Just sayin.

      @@johndough247 I met her at the NAMM show. I asked her if she is still teaching bass and she invited me to her home in N. Palm Springs and I had the honor of sitting at the feet of the Master. They don’t call her First Lady of Bass for nothing. She played the majority of the early Motown hits and she created the bass lines for many of the best songs. She had a husband at the time who got drunk and on one occasion he beat her down and she was in the hospital for two years before she could play again. The Motown people had no choice but to call her protege James Jamerson to fill in for her. Nobody knew it would take two long years for her to recuperate. Some people said that they left her for dead. Her husband definitely did. But she was the First Lady and will be until somebody comes along to take her crown away. And yes, the “Duck” and the chick that played bass in The Talking Heads were also students of hers. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    I am here for a listen to the bass tone but instead I'm blown away by the awesome vocals:). Killer vocal tone! I must add, the three of you make beautiful music
    together. Very nice:)

    Once again that phat & thick P bass proves its dominance and literally shines when an artist like Sean mixes his gift of talent with proven build and versatile sound. I own both the P and J and I’m obsessed with both. These gents are idols to old and young groove players. Thanks greatly for the post.

    Crazy mix, so much better than the recording, the bass sound is to die for, multidimensional, physical since we could almost touch it, almost like listneing to great jazz, blues, with some acoustic flavour on the bass

    I just listened/watched this video 5 times. Yes, the bass playing is incredible; the bass and drum are super tight, and the guitar playing is likewise fantastic. But the singer is mind boggling. If I had listened to this piece on an iPod I might have thought that there were three different people sharing the vocals. Incredible. And the bass, drums, guitar, and voice came together to make 1+1+1+1 equal 10! Tremendous!

    Hey Scott have you ever checked out the tone of an Ernie ball Caprice? There isn't a whole lot on TH-cam about them but they have an incredibly good tone.

    • @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
      @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris 70x7 Best P-Bass tone in the world. And with the bridge pickup rolled in/soloed, a whole different animal, much funkier and meatier than a normal Jazz bridge pickup. I believe it's a side-by-side humbucker, so more like another P-pickup than a Jazz, really. I have one, as well as my USA Sterling 4 H, USA Sterling 4 HS fretless, and Japanese Fender Jazz neck/Warmoth Jazz body/EMG GZR-P pickup fretless. Between them all, I can't get a bad tone, and all of them are super useful.

    • @TeeCeeBee
      @TeeCeeBee 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney that's exactly what I thought when I first played the caprice- I couldn't get a bad sound out of it.
      I also have a 2001 Stingray H with a piezo pickup in the bridge. That's a weird combo, but rolling in a bit of the piezo adds a woody, grainy tone. They only made those for a couple of years. Definitely not a P bass tone though.

      @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris 70x7 I briefly owned a Sterling 4 H with piezo. Not for me, my playing's a little sloppy/aggressive and the microphonics were too pronounced, but I've heard other guys make wonderful sounds with them.
