This channel is now a regular Saturday morning tea time watch for us. We live in the west and your lunch of Banh mi at Pham Quyen on Clementi Road inspired us to check it out. It was just amazing. Can't believe I lived here so long and never had them. Keep the good work going, Richard!
I love the colonial era buildings in Singapore and I had so much nostalgia seeing you waiting out the rain at the Bras Basah MRT station, in the past I spent so much time going in and out of that station!
As usual, great video, great content, always never disappionted your audience! Please keep up with more informative video to let Singaporean know that we also got such a great place to visit!
7:49 (emily hill) was the last sultan siak sri indrapura house from east sumatra. his full name is syarif qasim abdul jalil syaifuddin al ba’allawiy or known as sultan syarif qasim II
Lovely houses, they really take you back to the another period. Every time I see one, my heart gives an extra beat just admiring the beauty of a long vanished era. The adjoining new constructions are an eyesore. Thanks for taking the effort Richard.
Singapore Polo Club and the stretch of Mount Pleasant Road has a rich British history. So is Bukit Timah Turf Club which has some British relic. Adam Park too has some well preserved colonial houses. Not to mention the former British bases like Changi, Seletar, Sembawang where personnel has their families accomodated.
Maybe you can do a piece on traditional Malay Houses. I think there's a few of them left in Singapore. I know there's one on Moulmein Road near Novena.
Really appreciate all the shots of you cycling by. It's a real pain to go back to pick up the camera :P thanks for exploring my hood! I grew up in Kembangan and spent all my days along East Coast Road. There used to be really old street lamp posts along St Patrick's Road (a parallel small road to East Coast Road), leading to the school, and the brother often told us tales of how the Japanese hung heads on them. I just did a Google street view down that stretch but no sight of the posts :(
I really love your channel, which highlights the hidden gems of Singapore....the colonial buildings....please continue wat u r doing, n I’ll try my best to support your channel....thanks😊👍
I thought you are going to introduce those houses at Admiralty Road again (you have covered that previously) . But I am glad that you are introducing to us so many other beautiful colonial houses which I did not even know!
Actually Emily Hill(7:52) was a former istana of Sultan Siak and it was belonged to Sultan Syarif Kassim II when he stayed in Singapore in late 19th century. However, it became Japanese Dentist's acquisition when he decided to sell the istana for 22000$ after returning to Siak in 1935
There are also colonial houses and buildings in the areas around Queenstown and Buona Vista, near Alexandra Road and Portsdown Road. Happened to see you and your son at Queenstown MRT station this afternoon, and I wondered if you were exploring the areas around here.
Churches next? You've put a few in the frame today haha. Many interesting ones from Orchard Rd, Prinsep St, Telok Ayer methodist, St Andrew's, Good Shepherd, Tamil church, Armenian church and so many more.
@@AsiaHikelopedia In case you'd like to do more contents on religious sites, here are some old mosques with historical significance + British/Europe architecture that's on top of my mind...Alkaff Upper Serangoon Mosque, Hajjah Fatimah Mosque, Omar Kampong Melaka Mosque, Haji Muhammad Salleh Mosque. :)
This is beautiful. I am just starting a series on black and white homes. Should start photographing them next week and will finish in August after my return
Thanks for that old houses tour Richard , I’m glad they are keeping most of them . Sorry a hat doesn’t cut it with me , you should wear a helmet when cycling . 10 minutes would be enough for me 😜
When Richard showed the place where they first had their lunch in Singapore, how many years ago, was that? I remembered where my family was billeted as our first hotel stay here. That was November 1989 and we stayed in a hotel on Orchard Road. The name escapes me now but it was in a building before the entrance to the President's house. Can somebody jar my mind about the hotel's name? Thanks a lot, Richard!
Morning Richard I should have treat u to kopi when I speak to you on Thursday morning at Tampines Round market It should go well with the white carrot cake u took
Jesus, I no longer recognize the surroundings despite living in Singapore from 2001-2009 (first in East Coast Rd Katong, later in Marine Parade) !! I still recognize the buildings you presented here though...
Yep. It changes so fast. I've only been here 6 years, but Tampines is very different from when I arrived. The HDB behemoth has swallowed up vast tracts of land near my place.
finally found out the name of the building i used to pass by on the bus daily : Choa Kim Keat's house! Thanks! As an architect though, I do find some of these fine exemplars of colonial building rather rude and am embarrassed to even call them 'English Architecture', at least not in the same way as a Hawksmoor is. Lol!

When I lived in Singapore in the 70s Singapore was just moving to the modern world, and the truly amazing old parts still so many,

I admire you for being such an adventurous, and very keen to know more and find out about Singapore History . Magnificent architecture

Woke up, coffee and put this on the big screen. Great video, missing Singapore so much! Hopefully back soon.
Happy labour MAY day! Thanks for the wonderful sights of the old colonial buildings ! So majestic they are! 👍👍👍
Have a good great safe weekend ahead!
Thank you! You too!
I’m 36yo and I never knew so much about Singapore. Thank you once again for your informative videos. Enjoyed it tremendously!
Me too. Richard is more knowledgeable than the local...😁hope got the spelling right
Another great video on probably forgotten Singapore stories.
10:10 surprise

10:10 nice to see your fans recognising you.. More to come as Singapore is a very small city.. 😉
I remember this place Killiney Road, I used to eat here with my daughter or friends ❤😊

We stayed in Orchid Parade (now Orchid Rendenzvous) close to Tanglin for two weeks when we first came to Singapore. Nice area! Love chicken rice!
Beautiful and nice video.
Thanks so much for sharing😊😊🥰

Awesome!! Im obsessed with old shophouses. Especially pre war ones with the elaborate designs

My dad own few houses in Katong area in the past but those places had been demolished!
That's a shame!
i used to work right beside the karikal mahal 15 years ago before it was refurbished , it look really really derelict with floorboards dropping
This man is amazing , my goodness , awesome historian of Singapore
Great video, thank you! So many interesting old buildings in Singapore!

No, we weren't. But I've been round there before.
I keep on seeing your earlier videos.
Hope you like them!
Wonderful content. Think Mediacorp should engage you. Will be nice to see you on TV doing a series of such.
thanks Richard again. Those colonial buildings are beautiful. Sadly a nos are like abandoned

There are lots of colonial house in sg, you can rent them from the govt. They are not for sale because of heritage preserve.
Still one of the best references of history in Singapore after you've left for Taiwan, I went exploring on my Brompton at Brompton road. 😂😅
Thank you!

Nice. Can't wait to see it.
Hi I think I saw you cycling some where at Scotts road 2-3 weeks ago. Keep it up!
You did. Thanks 😃!
Thank you for another great video.
Thanks for watching!
Would like to suggest for you to visit Seletar area, where theres plenty of colonial buildings, which link to the yishun dam!
Would you ever consider livestreaming one of these? Looks like it could be fun to follow you on your adventure in real time!

Thanks 👍 I do wear one when I'm cycling on the road. For these videos I'm mainly on the footpaths.

I have
very nice, thank you!
Thank you too!
Hi Sir I suggestion for you to visit Matilda house at Punggol
I considered it for this video, but logistically wise it was so far away from all the others. Maybe in a future video.
I think Richard did ask who is currently living in that condominium... if not he can’t access to that “haunted” house for filming
Just wondering, if anyone ever told you that you look like Jason Statham 😄 (another nice 👍🏻 video btw )
Thanks. It has been said before. But he has muscles and a lot more money than me!
@@AsiaHikelopedia but you have more wisdom and creativity 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Richard i juz saw ur photo wif 1 chinese guy at GUNONG NUANG MALAYSIA in one of the tube channel. Nora Anne disappearance..
Singapore by far has the best urban planning but the weather is...I cannot accept the heat.
Nice one!
wow!! this is super awesome!!
Glad you think so!
thanks for this! historic homes are totally my jam. and just curious - if you're the very first owner of an automobile, where do you get gas? lol
Use coconut oil maybe?
Haunted houses in Sg next?
Maybe......

Sorry, but it is DISGUSTING carrying a conversation with a mask hanging from one ear. It is also quite rude.
