I would like to share the freedom this movie is giving me. When Amanda was bickering that her mother didn't love her + gave her up Julia replied 'You don't know the life of being bought & sold' 'You know freedom' & 'That's all I could ever want for my child' ... this is the freedom I have in Christ. I may not have known freedom before I had bought into fears insecurities and imperfect parents & dealing with wretched people but God has bought my freedom so that I don't have to be bound to the chains in my mind, of my past etc. If anyone understands & receives healing, pass this along. & Share here any other movie that u would recommend, thank u & God bless

I disagree with any child being called a bastard because their parents chose how they came into the world. Children are beautiful and a gift from God. Period.
"Bastard" is a legal term meaning that the child's parents were not married. It has become, over time, a rude, crude, insulting term. The preferred word is "illegitimate" which is also gaining its own negative connotation.

Native Americans had black slaves 30 years after slavery was abolished, white people have been used as slaves too through the years ........... My children STILL have their slave names although we have traced their original names Slavery still goes on ITS CALLED HUMAN TRAFFICKING
This happened many times. I read the journal of a young slave who had a baby by the plantation owner. Her children were born with white skin so, the plantation owner and his wife ripped her children out of her arms and raised them as their own. She talked about how they called her racist names and spit on her yet, she never told them who she was because she didn’t want them to live how she lived or hate themselves for being part black. Truly heartbreaking.

The South during this time seemed like a living hell for all black people. African-Americans have been to hell and back and come out as a strong, resilient group of people who have just persevered. God Bless.
Only difference between the North and South during those time was nothing. A slave is a slave no matter where they are because when you are owned you have no autonomy over your life.
Actually, you do. Opy is right. You all keep holding on to your past in order to make every excuse possible for your present. Your comment is proof of that.

This is such a sad story and the fact that it is true. I have two bi-racial kids, their father is white and I am African American and Creole. I have taught my kids to embrace their nationality. They never put anyone down because of the color of their skin.
Bi-ethnic...they are of one race - human, one nationality - American but of two (but probably many more) ethnicities. I am glad you are teaching them to treat people of all ethnicities, cultures, creeds, and economic levels equally. Kudos to you.
Thank you for this posting this movie. Julia's response to her rape shows what immense emotional strength women living in enslavement must have to recover from being broken in that way. Only the strong survived to past on the genes that flows in the veins of black ppl living today. We need to be as mentally strong today.
Such a young girl had to suffer terribly! This is what many men did to women in many races, but the worst was to a slave girl who had no one to defend her. The crimes committed by men such as this one may the Almighty judge them for what their evil committed. Men have always found a reason to condemn a woman as a tempter. Defining them as "evil" for their own physical desires of lust and control.
Ebonee Hines both the women in this movie went through some stuff! At first, I didn't understand what the black girl did in not being a mother to her, but towards the end that was explained so well! And the daughter, she had no way of knowing how to process everything, she was taught a terrible way of life, then had to deal with who she was, then trying to work out her emotions. In the end it was a beautiful story! But too many didn't turn out so well!
The Lord definitely took time to create us; not that other women are not amazing but the Lord definitely added a little extra to the ingredient,I love my sisters💓
1Peter 3:7 women are the weaker sex. Years ago black woman respected their husbands. Now today because we got an education a better job we think we better than, when God made us to be their help mate. Not the boss. As Christians we must Obey the word of God and not follow the ways of the world.
"Oh great"another religious bible basher. All I said was God Bless the black woman. And here you come with bibles verses to condemn me. How do you know if I'm a Christian or not? Sadly it is people like you who run people away from the God and the church using God's word to manipulate others. But you have a bless day and tryna not to be so critical of others just as easy it is for you to throw a verse their are plenty that can describe you as well.👋 Good Day
We focus on the actions of some people, not on their color. They committed a great sin because of skin color. We have to be realistic. Why did I choose to be white or black? There is no different characteristic between them. This is a fact.
I am 62, I'm not hateful towards any race. In my eyes we are ALL the HUMAN RACE! There are, unfortunately hateful and harmful people in every race. I have multiple races in my family. I am Scott and Italian and I have 6 different races mixed into my family and it's awesome. So not all "White" people are hateful, just like not all "Blacks", "Jews", etc etc ., etc. are hateful or hurtful or harmful.... I'm sick of all this race BS. There are POS' that are evil and wicked in each race! Not just one! Everyone has been enslaved at one time or another. From Hebrews, to Jews, to Africans, even down to whites of different back grounds. We are all enslaved now by the wealthiest elitists which are 13 families who are freemason and and rule all the money making all the rules and changing things as they see fit to their agenda and greed! Most of them are 'kings', etc.! Personally I hate ALL RACISM towards anybody by anybody! ALL HATRED AND HARMING ANY BODY IS HEARTBREAKING AND THE DEVIL IS HERE TO STAY AND TRYING TO GET RACISM TOWARDS ALL RACES GOING TO WAR SO HE CAN WIN AND DESTROY ALL PEOPLE!THAT IS VERY HEARTBREAKING.! VERY SAD MOVIE. I AM WAITING FOR WHEN CHRIST COMES BACK TO DESTROY ALL HATRED AND RACIST CRAP IN THIS WICKED AND SAD WORLD! I PRAY FOR ALL PEOPLE TO BE STRENGTHENED AND AT PEACE THROUGH THE WICKEDNESS IN THIS WORLD!
It's not whites that's just hateful. Look around today and the communist Democrats are flipping the racism. Calling wipes privilege well let me tell you I'm white and my ancestors were slaves. Mistreated just like any black. What they have done by enslaving anyone of any color race or creed is evilness. This should never happen. But today in America Democrats work very hard at keeping us divided. You see if we argue among ourselves they'll have more power to control us. If we generate the hatred that the Democrats encourage It's our fault. Why can't we treat each other as equals? Because a politicians don't want equal. They want complete control and if we argue and fight among ourselves they will conquer. Democrats want the communist billionaire wealthy to control the rest of it that will live in poverty and slavery under their domain. They're working towards a one-world order and their first agenda is the great reset and the Democrats are in the midst of that now. They're not working for America They're working for the global elite. Our borders are open our country's been invaded they've taken our oil away are independence away next they'll take our food. So wake up unify God bless America it's the last three country on earth once that's gone our world is gone

I have always like how Jennifer Beals has never tried to hide or deny her black parentage even though she could clearly pass for "white" She doesn't make a big deal about being "mixed" She is just gracefully a person. Love the way she carries herself.
M ern There's more to it than that , two people met one another under the terms of a slave being the property of her Master and her Master being able to do what he wanted with that property , including rape and getting his property pregnant , so it was more than Just " two people meeting up and having a child " Having a child out of rape is all the difference in the world.
She's like my cousin my cousin is extremely very passable but if you call her a white woman she's ready to fight I love my cousin even though I don't stay in touch with her and just how she was she know she could pass but she never tried to deny that she was black just don't call her white woman
It breaks my heart everytime I watch the mother and daughter confront their situation. With all the pain it caused both of them, her mother said and I would do it again. With tears in my eyes I agree with her mother everytime I watch that scene.
As a young child I always wanted to be a black person because I found them to be so beautiful...when I learned years later about the history of slavery in the USA I was shocked to the core. I ended up teaching at an all African American Montessori school in Atlanta ... I was the sole European there...and I loved those children profoundly . Having lived in Switzerland where mixed heritage families are fairly common, it was an education for me spending time in the American south. Bless from AZ and Ecaudor 🙏🐱✨🦁
I love movies like this! we black & white americans need to stop running away from this shared history..more talk & movies should be about it..oh yeah I love Jennifer Beals :)
It's not just "Americans" who benefit from movies like this, raising important aspects of being human like this - our rights, our dignity, our humanity. I am Canadian, descended from a fugitive slave from the US. He crossed the border on the Underground Railroad. He married a Scottish woman who had also escaped her enslavement. She was an indentured servant who had run away from her employer in Canada. My mother was the only, and the most white looking child of the four siblings in her family, generations later. Race and colour were NEVER discussed anywhere ever as I was growing up. I knew my aunt and uncles looked different from my mother, but it didn't seem important.
Julia is (was) one beautiful person. Imagine being in her shoes. She was bought for money, and impregnated by a white man. The scene after the baby is born is very well done. Julia realizes there's not going to be a man of color in her life, and only a white grandma and white daddy for her ½black baby. She doesn't want to nurse her baby, and what choice does she have in the matter of having the life she would have had as a free black girl/lady. Lucky for her it was a rather gentle "family", but the goal was money and property and profit. Still Julia suffered patiently through everything. I kindof wonder if she had any happiness, but she was so resolute in her humility, I feel that God was really helping her through. And maybe they all became a little color blind. Father didn't go looking for a white wife.
This is one of the best movie I have seen. Pure classic. I'll call it classic because of the acting. I wish they were making such type of movies now a days. These days are only about nonsense vampires and werewolves.
A similar situation happened in my family. My 5x great grandfather was born to a mulatto slave woman, his father being the master of a plantation in Virginia. He was sent away to his father's sister's family as an adolescent to live with them and be educated, raised as white. Upon his father's death, he was willed the farm which he sold and then moved to Kentucky. Throughout his life, he married three times, all of his wives were white. His father also left his mother an annuity paid to her yearly. The story was written up in the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography and was titled The Son of a Certain Woman.
Some white people were like this because they were still reasoning partly like animals. They had not evolved to have love for everyone unconditionally. All races, including the black race, have people who are racist because they have not evolved to the stage where they will have unconditional love for everyone including people from other races. It is evolution. A time will come when the human race on earth as a whole will have evolved to have unconditional love for all regardless of race. Many other planets in the universe have evolved to this level
I see why you are so proud of this movie. You did a beautiful job portraying Amanda in a story that is both about love and hate. Although every story can be told This story Should be told , Loud and unwavering. thank you for doing this justice!
B H Mch . I'm not too sure how much of this was absolute truth... since most films are 'loosely based'. could have been worse. no doubt the rape could have been. & it could have been more than once. things he said to her? worse.... ? I understand that there were some cruel, selfish 'owners' who were much, much worse. so glad that era is over in this country, & too bad that 'some ppl' keep trying to stretch it out with false accusations, some of which I have seen on here as well as PROVEN wrong here on UTUBE (hard to deny a clear vid.).
As much as I hate how things were back then I love watching these movies because I love knowing the truths about my history! I definitely love his acceptance of his baby girl 💞
I keep coming back to this movie and I get so emotional everytime because I keep forgetting certain parts. Such great acting in this movie. It was a weird kind of love and support floating in the background, people really kept their emotions and feelings to themselves back then and that's what makes it tougher, when the truth all comes out. Keeping the truth a secret can be just as hard as speaking the truth but only one of them makes your soul feel better in the end ♥
I usually dont comment and avoid these movies as being TOO HEAVY - BUT - this is a fantstic movie and should go viral as a lesson against hypocracy and bigotery. Thank Yous.
A very good movie. Right and truth prevailed, as it should have. Every person has the right to leave their assets to whomever they please to do so and when it is written down, no one has the right to change it!!!
Execept white people with white privileged of course in them dyas it seems like even the "law" didn't mean anything cos alot of the slaves were still held captive on plantains even with a FREE Statas Terrible and thus is ONE THING IN. LIFE I will NEVER FORGIVE They r DEVILS
It was still rape, and an abuse of power, which was white supremacist racism. HE was the only person in the situation that had a choice in the matter. So, I guess you can "love" stolen property, but shitty shit is still shitty.

French. according to DNA tests from parents theirs a bit of Asian, native American, north African and middle eastern there. The moors occupied Italy for a long time that's where the Arabic north African ancestry comes from and the Asian Siberian ancestry is from Finland as many Finnish people have Asian genes. I'm very different looking and sometimes people thought my hair was dyed. because I didn't look like the typical pure Celtic redhead. My hair is wavy and textured and my eyes are almond shaped and slightly slanted and my skin has a yellow tone. My hair is copper red blonde I freckle in the summer. I've only occasionally seen a few redheads who look something like me. Usually Slavic or Russian Siberian region. And I look sort of Italian semi arabic in my face as well. Sometimes I'm mistaken for Israeli or Jewish.
You are correct. Psychologically, many of our people have been indoctrinated (brain-washed) for YEARS that somehow "being light, bright and even white" is somehow "better?" EVIL and CORRUPTION runs through ALL of the color lines. Dam shame. WHEN will SOME of US wake up?
it's because Hollywood is very racist. Lisa Hamilton should have got an Oscar. the struggles of that era is still going on today. & Julia of that day is Lisa of today.
Your comment made me think of our city's MLK Jr. parade. For the past 3 years the organizers who are all African Americans permit a black owned bail bonds company to participate in the parade. They drive an old 1950s jail bus, have employees dressed up in chain gang costumes and hand out business cards to kids saying "give this to your daddy"
He listened to Julia more than anyone, she made sure their daughter was taking care of... He never brought another woman in that house she didn’t love him. He thought high of Julia he knew he couldn’t leave anything to her but he wanted both of them to have a good life.
When you remove someone's humanity, you will make it okay to do anything you wish to them, and it won't matter to you. That's what happened here, and so many centuries ago. No one can erase that. Demoralize another soul and you damn your own.
A miraculous story of how a tragic situation had worked out towards a good outcome. The fact that the father did not differentiate away from his mother to start a new home with a wife and family of his own, had served ironically as a saving grace for the slave girl and their beloved daughter. Imagine how much more difficult it would have been for all concerned, had there been a legitimate wife and other children in the picture.
The movie is excellent both actresses and Jim Daley were terrific. As I a dark skinned African American raised by upper middle class Black family in the 80's "Cosby family style" racism is still alive. Although I was raised to be proper and cross cultural with two Black parents I was always reminded of my complexion. I used to wonder if my life would be easier assimilating in a"white" world to have lighter complexion. It is so hard to this day to be of a darker skin tone and Dark skinned African American women are not represented well in the media. I'm glad biracial people are now more accepted in society but Blacks have always been displaced like the Julia character. I am not at all surprised by the views and opinions in the movie.

This movie make me sick to my stomach. I am sorry, I can't see all the good only. Being an Ayitian woman, whose ancestors have fought and become the first free black country, I just can't stop crying. My people have been sold like sheep and cattle, my foremothers forced to have a man inside of them that they had no choice to say no, children born with complex issues such as not being accepted, hating their mothers and themselves at time while trying to find favor from their fathers, or sold or forced as slaves themselves. My forefathers were treated harshly, taken away and turn into working horse. Here where the seed of our family destruction started. Pastors were slave owners as well. Remember that! Yes I see master David loving his daughter but remember how his daughter came into this world. His love still does not make it right! Raping was and will never be right, I don't care how you sugarcoat it.

Our government is the power the promotes bigotry and hatred of our fellow men, not the common man. Our government is run by Masons which are evil at their core!!
All the institutional prejudices against people of color are a legacy of slavery, a founding principle of the US. If you don’t really understand, wise up and educate yourself.
Latasha Ogletree me too. that is me when my first grandchild, Tyrah, was born in 2009..I was so in love, me/hubby kept her. 2016, she's 7, and still lives with us!!!
Latasha Ogletree I was thinking the same. And back then it was something hard for a white woman to embrace a black or biracial female. Black woman were despised consider 12 years a Slave
Sadly, she only loved her because she was white skinned, and worked hard to KEEP her that complexion. I am sure that she would have had a different opinion of her grandaughter, had she been born darker.
*There is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus* Galatians 3:28 Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth- *to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people* - saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.” Revelation 14:6-7
Yes, this is a beautiful story. Being born mixed in that period of time was extremely hard. I think it's a shame that white masters could rape their female slaves, and when a child was born, they wouldn't even acknowledge it. An innocent child who had no say in its race would have to suffer in the world of slavery. Slavery was wrong, no matter how you look at it. Mandy was a mixed child who grew up to be a strong woman who stood up for what was hers, and let noone degrade her for who she was. We are all gods children and should love one another no matter where we come from. I love this movie !!!

Native Americans had black slaves 30 years after slavery was abolished, white people have been used as slaves too through the years ...........
My children STILL have their slave names although we have traced their original names
Slavery still goes on ITS CALLED HUMAN TRAFFICKING
What a lie
If you are white then this a line for the ages. Tell this millions of people set up and sent them prisons then they might just laugh at you
So glad his Will and Wishes were honoured...so glad he did the right thing by his child and her mother.
This movie is a great depiction of how our prejudices can cloud our judgment and moral values. Thank you Ms Beals.
I believe I read the same story as you. I would’ve told them tho.

Opy Brook u sound really dumb
Actually, you do. Opy is right. You all keep holding on to your past in order to make every excuse possible for your present. Your comment is proof of that.
Jeff Smith if u are referring to me when did you hear me make excuses about my present???? I'm GREAT if u must know and I ain't holding on to SHIT what happened, happened talking about it or ignoring it won't change the fact that it happened. Jeff Smith Just like your folks hold on to the confedrate flag and everything else. Tell your folks to let go and lets us be free. The shit is still happening but in a different form. Until ehite people stop their evilness then we all can rest and be.
Excellent movie. I have watched this four times.
This is such a sad story and the fact that it is true. I have two bi-racial kids, their father is white and I am African American and Creole. I have taught my kids to embrace their nationality. They never put anyone down because of the color of their skin.
❤️
Bi-ethnic...they are of one race - human, one nationality - American but of two (but probably many more) ethnicities. I am glad you are teaching them to treat people of all ethnicities, cultures, creeds, and economic levels equally. Kudos to you.
Wench
As you should ❤️
If only all parents would do this, the world would be a different place. We are as one, black or white we are all the same. 😘😘😘
I cried so much through this movie. The love of a woman, a mother to hold her silence for the freedom of her child.

Thank you for this posting this movie. Julia's response to her rape shows what immense emotional strength women living in enslavement must have to recover from being broken in that way. Only the strong survived to past on the genes that flows in the veins of black ppl living today. We need to be as mentally strong today.
Julia is one STRONG women ! for every thing she did for David and her daughter😢😢😢 strong lady she is !

The lady that played Julia is Beautiful!😍
@@youmakemelaugh1797 yes she should have won a award for that role.
she did all that for her daughter. if you di not get that, watch again carefully, especially toward the end.
My thoughts!
A Black woman is the strongest human being on earth,God bless the black woman💯💯
Ebonee Hines both the women in this movie went through some stuff! At first, I didn't understand what the black girl did in not being a mother to her, but towards the end that was explained so well! And the daughter, she had no way of knowing how to process everything, she was taught a terrible way of life, then had to deal with who she was, then trying to work out her emotions. In the end it was a beautiful story! But too many didn't turn out so well!
The Lord definitely took time to create us; not that other women are not amazing but the Lord definitely added a little extra to the ingredient,I love my sisters💓
That's not true. The black man is a that's why Jehovah God made him head over the woman. Like God is over Christ.
1Corinthians 11:13
1Peter 3:7 women are the weaker sex.
Years ago black woman respected their husbands. Now today because we got an education a better job we think we better than, when God made us to be their help mate. Not the boss. As Christians we must Obey the word of God and not follow the ways of the world.
"Oh great"another religious bible basher. All I said was God Bless the black woman. And here you come with bibles verses to condemn me. How do you know if I'm a Christian or not? Sadly it is people like you who run people away from the God and the church using God's word to manipulate others. But you have a bless day and tryna not to be so critical of others just as easy it is for you to throw a verse their are plenty that can describe you as well.👋
Good Day
I'm a 72 year old white man .I watched this movie countless of times .It was so emotional that we whites could be so hateful hurtful
Wow 🎉🎉🎉I salute you . Not many recognize and empathize with the dark history black people endured and still endure. Speak up more. Tell the world to embrace kindness , respect and equal.
Mr. Robert It is never too late to change and create a different future for our children. This division that racism in America is destroying our country. Every day we are losing it piece by piece to outsiders. A house divided will not stand!
I am a Negra as they called it ...and I am a very very happy and proud one🤗❤️
Me too
Recently i have been watching several movies about slavery and vicious racism in the South. These stories have strengthened my respect and admiration for the 'negro' race who fought and struggled - (still fighting) for justice. RIP all the brave souls who fought for equal rights this past two centuries.
Wow, what a gloriously beautiful, well done story! The characters are exceptional. So happy they all found peace .
Gotta LOVE Jennifer Beals! I'll watch anything she is in... she brings class, kindness and intelligence to every role she plays...
Why are mullattos with African features and curly hair obsessed with white looking biracials and quadroons ???? It seems like there is Colourism in the mixed community, with a preference towards those who look more white.
@ iboxtiver ...People are slowing moving away from that... beauty is being redefined... we must just move on and ignore people still holding on to the past...
Because in America white is seen as being right...

Thank you Ms. Beals for uploading this beautiful movie. I never seen it before. Thank you!
I have always like how Jennifer Beals has never tried to hide or deny her black parentage even though she could clearly pass for "white" She doesn't make a big deal about being "mixed" She is just gracefully a person. Love the way she carries herself.
Well it isn't really a big deal..two humans met and had a baby ..a story as old as time.
M ern
There's more to it than that , two people met one another under the terms of a slave being the property of her Master and her Master being able to do what he wanted with that property , including rape and getting his property pregnant , so it was more than Just " two people meeting up and having a child "
Having a child out of rape is all the difference in the world.
MixedWisper1977 I think what the point here is that both you and Jennifer Beals were conceived a lot closer to 1977 than 1877...
I agree !
One of Jennifer Beals' best performances.
You're beautiful just who you are God made you and He don't make no mistakes...embrace who you are in the eyes of your Creator...the Lord Jesus ❤️🤗

@Selene victims to your forefathers wrath and the aftermath yall didn't have a problem shoving things down our throats bitch
I am in love with this movie. Awesome job. I cried through most of it.

@B H Mch, did you ever share this awesome movie??

Lisa Gaye Hamilton REALLY caught the essence of what being enslaved was like. Why she received no accolades is beyond me.

I am
not at all surprised by the views and opinions in the movie.

The political system foments division and profits from it
All the institutional prejudices against people of color are a legacy of slavery, a founding principle of the US. If you don’t really understand, wise up and educate yourself.
I wish they did a follow up to this story... it should of been a miniseries. They left out some very important family information. 🙌
What an incredible true story with superb acting - the truth is always more powerful and interesting than fiction. Thank you for posting this.
i was the tour guide for the museum in Sparta. we had 2 rooms that was dedicated to this story and i met the actress that played Amanda
ash oran nice to meet you..I have family deep roots from Sparta Ga

This movie made me cry a lot and I didn't stop until it was over.
Great movie. Julia was an amazing woman. Such an interesting story
I love this movie Jennifer Beals is an amazing actress... since i to am mixed i find this movie to be very enlightening.
This is a great touching story, love Jennifer B..anything she stars in..always good to watch..
i like the grandma she something else she loved that baby at first sight
Latasha Ogletree me too. that is me when my first grandchild, Tyrah, was born in 2009..I was so in love, me/hubby kept her. 2016, she's 7, and still lives with us!!!
Latasha Ogletree I was thinking the same. And back then it was something hard for a white woman to embrace a black or biracial female. Black woman were despised consider 12 years a Slave
Sadly, she only loved her because she was white skinned, and worked hard to KEEP her that complexion. I am sure that she would have had a different opinion of her grandaughter, had she been born darker.
Angela Brown-Bessau Thank you, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that piece. She only loved that white side.
Yeah, only because she looked white.... had she been born actually looking black, she wouldn't have been so loving towards her.
*There is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus* Galatians 3:28
Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth- *to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people* - saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.” Revelation 14:6-7
I love this movie so far. It was beautifully done. Outstanding cast, beautiful story

Unique movie of the past we as people endured so much so much anquish
the one and the only reason our hearts to not break ever so completely is that we have learnt to look away from what we should see. we have mastered the art of ignoring the truth, for that , generations continue to pay and the price gets higher every moment.
I like your comment, thank you for caring. God bless you my sister or brother. Peace.
