Hiking House Mountain State Natural Area

- Just a short drive from downtown Knoxville is a state natural area called House Mountain. This is the highest mountain in Knoxville at 2,064'.
From the parking lot, I hiked the connector trail to the where the trail starts, You'll know by the large sign there showing the "Blue & White" trails. I started out by hiking up the mountain on the blue trail which is 1.0 mile to the Crest trail (Red blaze). This is a technical trail so plan accordingly. Once at the 1-mile marker you'll be on the Crest trail from there I turned right to go visit the East overlook which is .7 of a mile away. The views did not disappoint. For me, the views were worth the effort of hiking up. Once I snapped a few photos and explored the rocks a bit and headed back .7 of a mile. From there the West overlook is .8 of a mile. I stopped off at the old WBIR tower location and then headed on down to the overlook. For me personally, I liked the East overlook the best. Instead of going back the way I came I decided to make a loop hike out of it and continue on down the Crest trail. This trail does just end and you'll have to look for the white marker (it's in this video) but it reads .8 of a mile to the connector trail. Along this trail, you'll see large rocks and overhangs a couple creek crossings and one snake. Once at the end just turn right and follow the trail to end back up at the parking lot. all this for a total of around 4 miles. I will come back and hike it again but I want to do so in the winter months.
Thanks for watching and do give me a thumbs up and leave a comment to say hello.

Thank you. My great-grandfather was born on House Mountain, shortly before the Civil War. ❤️
Oh that's so cool. I'd love to know more of that history from House Mtn during the Civil War era.
I love hiking House Mountain with my pup. Usually go up white and down blue. Great place to get in a few miles without driving to the mountains. Thanks for the video!
Hi Abbi, I went up blue and down white. I thought the blue was pretty steep, but luckily only one mile up. Yes, it was a short drive with fantastic views. Thanks for watching.
Keep going past the east overlook to the end of the Mtn. I think you would enjoy the that part of the trail. As a kid I played and camped on the Mtn.
stan rose I saw that the trail went on. I don’t know the area so I didn’t venture too far away from the known trail. I’ll be going back late fall or winter. I’ll explore more then. Thanks for the info.
I'm definitely gonna check it out, cool video man
Thanks, It's a great local hike close to Knoxville.
Man I LOVE that the trees there are mostly all hardwoods :D We have so many pines in Georgia and they're just not as nice to be in.
agree but these hardwood can be rough on allergies though.
Beautiful area!
Matt Batten It sure is. That was my first time there.
Glad I found your Channel! Sick vid and that's the longest snake I've ever seen ✌️
The Hiker Dad Thank you Hiker Dad! Being outdoors is life, making videos is hobby. Thanks for subscribing. That was a very long snake. 🐍
Looks like a cool area for hiking. I hate snakes. Spooky. Cool video Johnny
Thanks Jason, yeah not a huge fan of them either.
I feel like house mountain gets overlooked a lot. I've hiked it about 5-6 times and the view at the top is worth it with some steep elevation and climbing right at the top too.
Yes i think so too. It's a great hike that's outside of the smokies. the views from up there are pretty amazing.
10 minutes from my house and I didn’t even get a call. Lol.
I like the east end overlook better. I think it has a better view. That’s where I did the review on the backpack.
Wowwww... how did you get that shot of the snake. That’s awesome. You always get some of the best video footage.
You’ll have to let me know when you go back.
it was a last minute trip spare of the moment kinda thing. Yes, I agree I like the east overlook better. I could have sat there for a while and soaked it all in. The snake I saw as I was on my way down he peaked out from around that step.
I saw a huge snake in your video. Is it a poison one?
It is not a venomous snake. just a common black rat snake.
That was a big snake! Was it a rat snake?
Yes, it was not venomous. I believe it was headed towards the stream for a drink of cool water.
