When Lilibet (who, I confess, will always be QT to me) fledged, I wrote a little poem to commemorate the occasion. When Manaaki fledged the following year, I did the same. This year, however, I’m going to take a page from Lady Hawk’s book and make a dedication. This past May, my mother passed away at 92 years of age. I do not write this to garner sympathy; just to give some context. She was an incredibly proud and incredibly independent woman…in an age when women were not encouraged to be either of those things. My love of animals- and especially birds-comes from her. For the last two and a half years of her life, she had very limited mobility. I started showing her Lady Hawk’s videos of Manaaki last year (I had told her about Tiaki and Lilibet in the previous two years). She absolutely loved the videos and the albies. I have such lovely memories of her laughing; for example, when a female chick practiced her displaying and skycalling in front of Manaaki…who promptly turned and paddled away as fast as he could! (As Mum put it: “I have no idea what you’re doing, but you’re scaring the life out of me!”) And-of course-we followed TF and TFT together (she was especially fond of TFT) until she passed. So I’m going to dedicate TF’s and TFT’s fledging to my mother…and assure Lady Hawk and everyone here that my mother’s spirit will watch over them both as they continue on their life’s journeys. With love to you all. ❤️🤗
That's lovely that she enjoyed the albies andt gave her much pleasure. As you say, we only borrow our atoms for a short time and then pass them back to the universe, but it humans happiness and kindness that helps these birds and helps them fly, I am glad you mother and you had a shared happiness with them then and always. To love nature shows our compassion in these somewhat dark times.

How touching and poignant. This beautiful bird on its way. This is the second year my watching the wonderful videos put together by Lady Hawk. A warm thank-you for the eight or nine months of almost daily scenes from incubating parents to little fuzzy chicks to gangly juveniles and now magnificent sea birds. Rather overwhelming I must say.
I watched this live in UK but I wasnt sure if he fledged or not.Then I couldn't sleep, so I started watching at 12 o'clock midday,hoping to see TF, but instead at 12:07 LGL landed, she looked for TF up and down,she went to the first nest,sit there very long time,then she walked to the new nesting site and sit there and waited for TF. Right now it's 16:51 ,poor mum LGL is stil waiting,yes she has been waiting for TF nearly 5 hours.😢 I stopped watching, but she is still there.That means TF definitely fledged.😢 Safe jurney TF , I hope we will see you and TFT in 4 years time and will see your chicks too one day. ❤❤❤ And goodbye everyone who watched this season, see you in January for the new season.🙏

Fledging is so bitter-sweet for us as viewers but so much more for the parents. Hard not to shed a tear as the parent waits for the return of its chick... It seemed like such a long season and, in a moment, here we are without our chicks, bravely departed, thanks to an ancestral impulse, towards their great adventure. Hundreds of thoughts and hearts will accompany you TF, and will support your wings in your journey in the immense blue ocean... stay safe, avoid the insidious dangers that hide in the big world and remember to come back home and to all of us, when the time comes.... Finding myself tearing up, as I always do. I become so attached to these chicks, and their parents, that it's hard to see them go. It's a big world out there, on their own now. Kiwa means "The divine protector and guardian of the ocean and the name is fitting for our albatross as it's renowned for travelling great distances over vast stretches of water." None of the other chicks received names. Sad that TFT did not get one!

I watched this live in UK but I wasnt sure if he fledged or not.Then I couldn't sleep, so I started watching at 12 o'clock midday,hoping to see TF, but instead at 12:07 LGL landed, she looked for TF up and down,she went to the first nest,sit there very long time,then she walked to the new nesting site and sit there and waited for TF. Right now it's 16:51 ,poor mum LGL is stil waiting,yes she has been waiting for TF nearly 5 hours.😢
I stopped watching, but she is still there.That means TF definitely fledged.😢

Very mixed emotions, actually feeling quite teary! Godspeed TF. Have a good "year off" both sets of parents! Fledging is so bitter-sweet for us as viewers but so much more for the parents. Hard not to shed a tear as the parent waits for the return of its chick...

One is never really prepared for The Fledge even though you know it's coming. The void is overwelming for us aunties and uncles but even more so for the Albie parents. It is raw nature that we experience watching the lives of these amazing birds and The Fledge marks the end of a successful season, so it is all good. Finding myself tearing up, as I always do. I become so attached to these chicks, and their parents, that it's hard to see them go. It's a big world out there, on their own now. @@pglen6042 Yes TF has been given his official Maori name - Kiwa! Kiwa means "The divine protector and guardian of the ocean and the name is fitting for our albatross as it's renowned for travelling great distances over vast stretches of water." None of the other chicks received names. Sad that TFT did not get one!
