This is entirely false, the Dutch just needed food to survive and the only edible thing they could find were those Dodo Birds, hence the Dutch name ''Walgvogel'' which quite literally translates to ''Disgusting Bird''. The wages that were eventually paid to VOC sailors weren't that bad. It's just that a Dutch sailor had to survive a few years untill he got back to Holland to get paid. Since most couldn't handle large sums of money, they usually drank and gambled it all away in weeks. Summary: half or more of the sailors never returned. Those that did return, squandered their money away.
