It feels like you understood what was wrong with the races in fifth stage, where we're watching people watch races instead of the race itself. Makes me happy to see you adding more to the race, with an overtake by Kai instead of him just constantly behind Takumi like some toothless threat. All the while staying faithful to the 5th stage style, really good stuff!

A back and forth of skill, showing each driver's weaknesses throughout. You even hinted at how Kai would lose after one of his gutter hops. And the finishing move from Tak? *chef's kiss* If every one of your animations going forward are like this one, showing how all the battles could have been better, I will happily come back for more! keep it up!

this is simply amazing! I know there're few aspect that can be add such as wind cross, or blur effects to make it much better. but the pyshics & the way the car moves are nearly identical to the anime ones. Bravo!
Amazing how it was done. From the audio, the scene cuts, the animation of everything and finally the story. I always found the 5th stage very superficial in the technical sense in the direction. Watching such a video showed many twists and solutions that the old Takumi would take and that was very much. It was very exciting to see from start to finish. For more productions of this level :)
A little rough around the edges, but the battle was way more interesting than the original 5th stage version. I also liked how you made Kai spin out because he was too reckless trying to catch up instead of just having random snap oversteer that wouldn't really happen to someone of his experience, like what happened in the original. Very good!
Except him spinning out due to recklessness is exactly what happened in the original... People tend to rely far too much on the animation rather than the writing itself and the context clues. Remember, the animators aren't the ones who've had real racing experience. The writers are. The same goes for all the other stages -- absolutely ridiculous things have happened in-animation but made sense if you ignored the quirkiness of the animation and paid attention to the dialogue. People tend to be hard on Initial D because that seems to be the cool thing to do right now. But if you pay close attention to the details and don't jump to conclusions you'll see that Initial D is far more realistic than it's made out to be. It was only around 5 years ago when people were laughing at Initial D's concept of drift winning over grip, and look who's laughing now. A person with more on-the-limit driving experience than any of those who laughed released a video on why it makes sense, and now everybody agrees it makes sense. Give it another 5 years from now, and people will probably be looking back on the other things they laughed at and realize how wrong they were.
@@undividual3891 the reason kai lost this race in the original was because he spun out due to snap oversteer. the mid ship platform of the mr-s is known to occasionally snap oversteer if handled incorrectly. the thing is, the previous generation mr2, a car that kai drove growing up was even more prone to snap oversteer than the mr-s. it's just not convincing to me that someone with so much experience with the toyota mr models would make such a rookie mistake, which is why the ending of the original race is not satisfying to me, as kai is always hyped up as one of the best drivers in the series. the other alternative reason for why he could have snap oversteered is that takumi may have purposefully slowed down in the middle of the corner to force kai to lift his foot off the gas, therefore causing his car to snap oversteer. this isn't really a satisfying option to me either, because it goes against takumi's moral code of always trying to play fair in the race. kai states after the race that he lost because he didn't drive recklessly enough, but the truth is that lifting his foot off the gas in the middle of a turn is probably the most reckless thing you could do in an mr such as the mr-s. i agree that the 5th and final stages are looked at too harshly in some aspects due to them being more technical than the other stages, but even from a technical standpoint, the way this race ends in the original is dissatisfying to me

I can agree that the original battle was a bit stale, as a lot of 5th Stage battles were to an extent. I feel like that's an unfortunate consequence of making the races more technical and complex in that part of the series. Just like Shinji's technique, the fastest driving style is really the least flamboyant, which is hard for Initial D because that flashy style is such a big part of the excitement. I'd say this remake is a pretty interesting take on the battle, sacrificing realism to some extent for adrenaline-pumping action. I guess whether that's good or not is up to the viewers.
don't want to sound like a broken record, but the reason he spun out was to avoid crashing (which sounds a little ridiculous tbh but hey). He acted more reckless and because of it, he thought the line he took had the chance of making him crash. To get out of his reckless line, he chose to spin out, which he had more confidence in whilst realizing that would make him lose the battle. I'm still not satisfied with that battle but that's the 100% canon reason.
Damn this was fun to watch. I think I prefer this ending over the original. Taking some creative liberty, while still keeping it mostly intact was definitely a good move.
As a fan of the series, and someone who loves racing, racing theory and other nerdy shit like that, this was awesome. Obviously the animation for the cars was a little odd in some scenes cause they looked low poly, but the rewrite for how the battle played out with the switching of positions and the mistakes both drivers make was perfect, as it shows the tension and anxiety that both felt during the battle. Overall, a 9.5/10. Definitely was more exciting than the original. Cant wait to see your future work.
I own a ZZW30, which I picked up after falling in love with it's driving characteristics, especially seeing how potent of a platform it can be when modded right. I of course thought that it's appearance in Initial D, especially with Kai at the helm was pretty underwhelming, but it has been a long while since I've last seen it. This video came on to my autoplay and I thought it was the original. Gradually I thought to myself: "Huh, this race was a lot better than I remembered, did my car really get such good representation? Wait did Kai actually overtake him? WAIT, When the sun goes down is from THIS race??" By the end I was enthralled and only after checking the comments did I realize that this is not the original. Bravo, the theatrical performance that the MR-S platform deserved, and if one does not pay attention this is just like the real thing. Keep it up mate.
This one actually felt like a race and had me on the edge of my seat multiple times lol. I love how this version was more of an exchange of technique rather than takumi lagging ahead in the original. Edit: now that I think about it, maybe the Fujiwara zone shouldn't have been exclusive to takumi, fifth stage was supposed to be the final batch of races and have the toughest drivers, so it would makes sense they'd have developed their own version through experience.
the zone state studied here is based on Takumi's as that's what Ryosuke mentions and based his fastest roads theory, but more racers have the zone state like Zero, who battle Keisuke and even Keisuke himself has that state.
i would've wished to see the exact same thing on intial d. Man you did an excellent work from the start to the end. Thank you for showing us this great thing. 10/10

Wow actually amazing, If the race was done like this it probably wouldve been my favorite one. I feel like alot of the last stages of the anime had so much more potential. I really dream of a remake of Intial D there is so much more that this show could've been. Great Blender tho dude absolutely loved it!
Just came across this video and I got to say this is some great work, you've definitely made this race into a far more exciting than the one we ultimately got in Fifth Stage and the manga (although I get the vibe that Shigeno just wanted to finish Initial D when they moved to the Kanagawa area), especially since this revamped version feels like it is more of a competition between the two drivers than the original version. It has been a while since I watched Fifth Stage, but I remember thinking at the time that considering Kai is supposed to be a professional racer and how he lost too easily to Takumi. I guess this race wasn't the only one in Fifth Stage that could have been done better, the FD vs Z33 race should have concluded differently.
Watched this again a few more times, it's so damn good, waaaaaaaaay better than the original race in Fifth Stage, I get goosebumps watching this now. Love how it starts getting heated up just as, I think, Ready Steady Go! really kicks in and Kai makes his comment about having faith that he is the fastest. There is something that in watching this I think the Project D part of Initial D missed out on, having Project D lose at least a single race and the outcome of that - say for instance if Takumi lost to Kai here (Bunta's rivalry with Kai's pops alludes to them trading victories), how would Project D proceed, would they have an extra race with Keisuke vs Kai?

You have really captured what OG initial D was like, I felt 100 times the hype from this than any of the 5th stage battles. You killed it, got the blood pumping and the whole thing was super high energy! Great understanding of how cars move with the suspension fully loaded, all very convincing and believable. I am writing and illustrating my own manga/graphic novel about the street racing scene in the USA during the late 90s turn of the century car scene, very much inspired by mangas like initial D and over Rev and even wangan midnight. I wish I had someone like you on my team to make Hype promo videos for me to get people interested and keep me motivated. I Think if I saw some of my ideas in action like this it would keep me inspired for months!! Keep doing great work man!! If you want to hear about what I have going on i'd love to tell you all about it lol.
Damn this is so sick, good work! The characters look a bit lifeless in some scenes but that's ok because fifth stage character designs weren't the greatest anyway. I just noticed, you changed what happens in the battle. Honestly, better battle writing than fifth stage LMAO. Edit: This video has inspired me to make a "Fifth Stage Rewritten&Reanimated" video of my own! I'll be taking a boring fifth stage race and make it cool, just like this video.

This was amazing, despite it being a canonically inaccurate approach. However, that inaccuracy made this race even better and exciting than the OG; I appreciate that. I give you a 9/10.
This has to be my most favorite Initial D fan animation of all TIME! I reaaaaaaally enjoyed the change of writing for this battle, it's very reminiscent of the Fourth Stage or even First Stage battles! Every opponent is simultaneously a lesson and also a huge threat for Takumi. It's a reoccurring idea that only the most powerful opponents can pass Takumi at least once, which Kai does so in this animation. Kai has grown in his time as a professional driver, but he also displays his own further inside line that beats Takumi's inner wheel lift AND he has his own Fujiwara Zone moment AND it also calls back to his Irohazaka Jump!! But even MORE SO, Takumi counters Kai's techniques with his own EVOLVED inner wheel lift technique that he uses to go *EVEN FURTHER* inside Nagao's line!! While Kai underestimates Takumi's move, he tries to copy him and fails because Kai does not have complete mastery over his car like Takumi does, which ALSO calls back to Takumi's two biggest reoccurring strengths: his unrivaled control of his car (besides Bunta) and his incredible ability to evolve and adapt on the fly! It's such a massive achievement to rewrite the battle and improve on the original with such limited dialogue and character shots! And not to forget the stellar animation itself being incredibly detailed: matching the original show's artstyle, the cars being handled quite realistically, and the overall polished feel that some fan animations can struggle with! My only little criticisms is that the character shots are generally stiff (which is already a weakness of Fifth Stage animation) and that some of the shots don't link consistently together like at 5:34 where Takumi enters the chicane going left, but then suddenly appears side by side with Kai STILL turning left, which contradicts the initial shot when they should be turning right. But overall, I am still blown away watching this animation again and again. I can't applaud you enough and I hope to see more Initial D animations from you! P.S. Some of my favorite shots!: 1) 2:25 This standstill shot of the two cars transferring their weight through the chicane, you can see the load shifting to the rear! Lovely details! 2) 2:35 The two cars exit the corner following the Out-In-Out racing line rule! Many animators don't pick up on using actual racing techniques! 3) 4:05 Kai's MR-S fish-tails ever so slightly as he exits the corner. 4) 5:01 Overhead shot of Kai shooting through S-turns, with minimal counter steer despite the rear weight distribution 1) 7:44 When Kai enters the turn seemingly having left Takumi behind, until Takumi appears and was actually chasing Kai the entire time. It works so well to fool the audience as well as Takumi's rivals, and subtly gives the audience a taste of just how dangerous and sneaky of a technique the Blind Attack really is! 2) 8:01 First-person spectator angles of Initial D races are so underrated! When you are standing still watching a race, it is all the more impressive to see to cars actual speed- chasing each other down such a tight and narrow pass! 3) 9:18 Kai doesn't know that Takumi used the Blind Attack on him, so that jolt reaction to bumping Takumi after trying to cut to the inside is extremely appropriate! 4) 9:31 This tiny but crucial cut where Takumi flips his lights back on at the blind corner and also sets up the climax of his inner wheel lift to overtake Kai! The beat drop is also on point B) 5) 10:51 Kai cuts the wheel lift gutter in a desperate attempt to catch up, but makes a crucial mistake of letting his wheel drop on the straight away! A terrifying close call that could have gone Toru at any moment!
Wow. Thank you so much for this comment. I'm really happy my video made someone write such a detailed one. It's really good to hear that you liked the animation. You even noticed little things like the zzw30 being the one that actually hit the 86, rather than the other way around, which i've seen people say. Some interior shots do lack polish, I'll definitely focus more on them in my next animations. Yeah some shots do contradict one another which can bother sometimes, buut 5th stage definitely also had shots like that sometimes so ima just call it intentional choice for that maximal 5th stage visual style. Only thing I'm worried of is my next revamp battles most likely wont be as good as this one, mostly because of lack of fitting voice lines and backstory for the characters for custom events.
Absolutely outstanding work you really brought the original vision for initial D's artstyle into play here and managed to further improve the original by a long shot you should be working on the new anime due to come out, i'd love to see a bunta race at this quality keep up the great work

3:44 Small nitpick here : the scene were Takumi did the inner wheel lift is a bid odd since the tire actually dropped into the gutter when it should've just hovered over it since if it were to drop into the gutter, Takumi would to a miata moment and flipped
Yeah the first 2 lifts are animated in the wrong way, I wanted to exaggarate the animation a bit but the amount of car body that dips down is way too big. The last one was at least animated correctly.

Me and my friend Cyrus were watching fifth stage, and after this race, I paused the shoe and showed him this video. We both agreed that this was an epic 9.7 remake of a 5/10 race.
4:50 I like the neat touch of Kai using Takumi's tricks against him where Takumi fell out of the gutter during the drift, the former kept up with using the Gutter Run. It's really shown in a really amazing way how Kai has grown compared to what the Anime/Manga gave us. If the main characters are growing, so should rival characters have theirs shown properly especially returning ones. 5:27 I was hoping Kai got his own Zone and we did here, epic stuff. Edit: Watching the end, I like how it was ultimately a technical issue that costed Kai the run. While his MR-S could do the gutter run here, it placed far more stress on his suspension with the lower ride height but if that didn't become the issue, he definitely would've won against Takumi. Edit 2: Seeing some comments below I am curious of the rationale you had as to why you thought Kai decided to act the way he did in this blender animation, since he did say he became a bit more afraid of mountain pass driving ever since he went pro, though if I had to imagine, people when pushed into very intense situations, even pros can do things they never thought would do. I wonder if you also had this line of thought when you had Kai do the wheel hopping gutter run against Takumi and did it around two to three times; which can possibly better tie into his thoughts of "I have to be even more reckless to win."

As a fan of the series, and someone who loves racing, racing theory and other nerdy shit like that, this was awesome. Obviously the animation for the cars was a little odd in some scenes cause they looked low poly, but the rewrite for how the battle played out with the switching of positions and the mistakes both drivers make was perfect, as it shows the tension and anxiety that both felt during the battle. Overall, a 9.5/10. Definitely was more exciting than the original. Cant wait to see your future work.
I own a ZZW30, which I picked up after falling in love with it's driving characteristics, especially seeing how potent of a platform it can be when modded right. I of course thought that it's appearance in Initial D, especially with Kai at the helm was pretty underwhelming, but it has been a long while since I've last seen it. This video came on to my autoplay and I thought it was the original. Gradually I thought to myself: "Huh, this race was a lot better than I remembered, did my car really get such good representation? Wait did Kai actually overtake him? WAIT, When the sun goes down is from THIS race??" By the end I was enthralled and only after checking the comments did I realize that this is not the original.
Bravo, the theatrical performance that the MR-S platform deserved, and if one does not pay attention this is just like the real thing. Keep it up mate.
This one actually felt like a race and had me on the edge of my seat multiple times lol. I love how this version was more of an exchange of technique rather than takumi lagging ahead in the original.
Edit: now that I think about it, maybe the Fujiwara zone shouldn't have been exclusive to takumi, fifth stage was supposed to be the final batch of races and have the toughest drivers, so it would makes sense they'd have developed their own version through experience.
It wasn't exclusive to Takumi: Ryosuke, Kesiuke, Go Hojo, Shinigami, Shinji all had their own flow state scenes.
the zone state studied here is based on Takumi's as that's what Ryosuke mentions and based his fastest roads theory, but more racers have the zone state like Zero, who battle Keisuke and even Keisuke himself has that state.
i would've wished to see the exact same thing on intial d. Man you did an excellent work from the start to the end. Thank you for showing us this great thing. 10/10

Wow actually amazing, If the race was done like this it probably wouldve been my favorite one. I feel like alot of the last stages of the anime had so much more potential. I really dream of a remake of Intial D there is so much more that this show could've been. Great Blender tho dude absolutely loved it!
Just came across this video and I got to say this is some great work, you've definitely made this race into a far more exciting than the one we ultimately got in Fifth Stage and the manga (although I get the vibe that Shigeno just wanted to finish Initial D when they moved to the Kanagawa area), especially since this revamped version feels like it is more of a competition between the two drivers than the original version. It has been a while since I watched Fifth Stage, but I remember thinking at the time that considering Kai is supposed to be a professional racer and how he lost too easily to Takumi. I guess this race wasn't the only one in Fifth Stage that could have been done better, the FD vs Z33 race should have concluded differently.
Watched this again a few more times, it's so damn good, waaaaaaaaay better than the original race in Fifth Stage, I get goosebumps watching this now.
Love how it starts getting heated up just as, I think, Ready Steady Go! really kicks in and Kai makes his comment about having faith that he is the fastest.
There is something that in watching this I think the Project D part of Initial D missed out on, having Project D lose at least a single race and the outcome of that - say for instance if Takumi lost to Kai here (Bunta's rivalry with Kai's pops alludes to them trading victories), how would Project D proceed, would they have an extra race with Keisuke vs Kai?

You have really captured what OG initial D was like, I felt 100 times the hype from this than any of the 5th stage battles. You killed it, got the blood pumping and the whole thing was super high energy! Great understanding of how cars move with the suspension fully loaded, all very convincing and believable.
I am writing and illustrating my own manga/graphic novel about the street racing scene in the USA during the late 90s turn of the century car scene, very much inspired by mangas like initial D and over Rev and even wangan midnight. I wish I had someone like you on my team to make Hype promo videos for me to get people interested and keep me motivated. I Think if I saw some of my ideas in action like this it would keep me inspired for months!! Keep doing great work man!! If you want to hear about what I have going on i'd love to tell you all about it lol.

Damn this is so sick, good work! The characters look a bit lifeless in some scenes but that's ok because fifth stage character designs weren't the greatest anyway.

This was amazing, despite it being a canonically inaccurate approach. However, that inaccuracy made this race even better and exciting than the OG; I appreciate that. I give you a 9/10.
This has to be my most favorite Initial D fan animation of all TIME!
I reaaaaaaally enjoyed the change of writing for this battle, it's very reminiscent of the Fourth Stage or even First Stage battles!
Every opponent is simultaneously a lesson and also a huge threat for Takumi. It's a reoccurring idea that only the most powerful opponents can pass Takumi at least once, which Kai does so in this animation. Kai has grown in his time as a professional driver, but he also displays his own further inside line that beats Takumi's inner wheel lift AND he has his own Fujiwara Zone moment AND it also calls back to his Irohazaka Jump!! But even MORE SO, Takumi counters Kai's techniques with his own EVOLVED inner wheel lift technique that he uses to go *EVEN FURTHER* inside Nagao's line!! While Kai underestimates Takumi's move, he tries to copy him and fails because Kai does not have complete mastery over his car like Takumi does, which ALSO calls back to Takumi's two biggest reoccurring strengths: his unrivaled control of his car (besides Bunta) and his incredible ability to evolve and adapt on the fly!
It's such a massive achievement to rewrite the battle and improve on the original with such limited dialogue and character shots! And not to forget the stellar animation itself being incredibly detailed: matching the original show's artstyle, the cars being handled quite realistically, and the overall polished feel that some fan animations can struggle with!
My only little criticisms is that the character shots are generally stiff (which is already a weakness of Fifth Stage animation) and that some of the shots don't link consistently together like at 5:34 where Takumi enters the chicane going left, but then suddenly appears side by side with Kai STILL turning left, which contradicts the initial shot when they should be turning right.
But overall, I am still blown away watching this animation again and again. I can't applaud you enough and I hope to see more Initial D animations from you!
P.S. Some of my favorite shots!:
1) 2:25 This standstill shot of the two cars transferring their weight through the chicane, you can see the load shifting to the rear! Lovely details!
2) 2:35 The two cars exit the corner following the Out-In-Out racing line rule! Many animators don't pick up on using actual racing techniques!
3) 4:05 Kai's MR-S fish-tails ever so slightly as he exits the corner.
4) 5:01 Overhead shot of Kai shooting through S-turns, with minimal counter steer despite the rear weight distribution
1) 7:44 When Kai enters the turn seemingly having left Takumi behind, until Takumi appears and was actually chasing Kai the entire time. It works so well to fool the audience as well as Takumi's rivals, and subtly gives the audience a taste of just how dangerous and sneaky of a technique the Blind Attack really is!
2) 8:01 First-person spectator angles of Initial D races are so underrated! When you are standing still watching a race, it is all the more impressive to see to cars actual speed- chasing each other down such a tight and narrow pass!
3) 9:18 Kai doesn't know that Takumi used the Blind Attack on him, so that jolt reaction to bumping Takumi after trying to cut to the inside is extremely appropriate!
4) 9:31 This tiny but crucial cut where Takumi flips his lights back on at the blind corner and also sets up the climax of his inner wheel lift to overtake Kai! The beat drop is also on point B)
5) 10:51 Kai cuts the wheel lift gutter in a desperate attempt to catch up, but makes a crucial mistake of letting his wheel drop on the straight away! A terrifying close call that could have gone Toru at any moment!
Wow. Thank you so much for this comment. I'm really happy my video made someone write such a detailed one. It's really good to hear that you liked the animation. You even noticed little things like the zzw30 being the one that actually hit the 86, rather than the other way around, which i've seen people say. Some interior shots do lack polish, I'll definitely focus more on them in my next animations. Yeah some shots do contradict one another which can bother sometimes, buut 5th stage definitely also had shots like that sometimes so ima just call it intentional choice for that maximal 5th stage visual style. Only thing I'm worried of is my next revamp battles most likely wont be as good as this one, mostly because of lack of fitting voice lines and backstory for the characters for custom events.

Small nitpick here : the scene were Takumi did the inner wheel lift is a bid odd since the tire actually dropped into the gutter when it should've just hovered over it since if it were to drop into the gutter, Takumi would to a miata moment and flipped

Yeah the first 2 lifts are animated in the wrong way, I wanted to exaggarate the animation a bit but the amount of car body that dips down is way too big. The last one was at least animated correctly.

4:50 I like the neat touch of Kai using Takumi's tricks against him where Takumi fell out of the gutter during the drift, the former kept up with using the Gutter Run.
It's really shown in a really amazing way how Kai has grown compared to what the Anime/Manga gave us. If the main characters are growing, so should rival characters have theirs shown properly especially returning ones.
5:27 I was hoping Kai got his own Zone and we did here, epic stuff.

Watching the end, I like how it was ultimately a technical issue that costed Kai the run. While his MR-S could do the gutter run here, it placed far more stress on his suspension with the lower ride height but if that didn't become the issue, he definitely would've won against Takumi.

Seeing some comments below I am curious of the rationale you had as to why you thought Kai decided to act the way he did in this blender animation, since he did say he became a bit more afraid of mountain pass driving ever since he went pro, though if I had to imagine, people when pushed into very intense situations, even pros can do things they never thought would do. I wonder if you also had this line of thought when you had Kai do the wheel hopping gutter run against Takumi and did it around two to three times; which can possibly better tie into his thoughts of "I have to be even more reckless to win."
