Funny opinions. When this was first broadcast everyone liked it. No one seemed to have issues with Sting and him being a pop singer. Jazz stations would even play songs from the Blue Turtles album from time to time. As always, any real perspective is lot and everything gets judged out of contest. As for jazz artists restraining themselves to "please" the rockstar guy: the most restrained of them all is Branford Marsalis and he was part of Sting's band at the time!
Keep in mind that Branford and all the other cats in Stings solo bands came through Gil, Weather Report and others not the other way round.Did not realize people do not like this? Will read the posts,Thanks!
We always struggle when individuals mix their opinions with for lack of for a better word fact. In this case I understand what you are saying but you are missing a lot of the picture/story. The overall reason why Gil accepted this gig was because sting wanted to do it and Gil understood that is was a pathway to individuals that would otherwise not have experienced the Gil Evans Orchestra. Say what you want but when you look at the concert as a whole it is not commercial/pop. As far as guys not playing what they are capable of I'll let you debate with them directly, i can only say it was no better or worse than any other Gil Evans Orchestra Concert.
This conception of Jimi's songs is really good idea. But I'm almost crying when I have to see and hear some of good jazz musician that are stopping their playing creativity just because to let mr. Sting a time to howl repeated words in pentatonic to cheaply increase feelings of audience. I'm glad that saxophonist was trying to let the monster out, but trumpeter was strictly held in guidelines of that song or just played exactly the same notes like in original but in diffrent order.
I think Sting did a great job here, unfortunately some of the instrumental playing is terrible out of place. Seems like Lew Soloff was at the wrong gig as the style of his solo doesn't fit at all, way too busy and gaudy. No doubt that Gil Evans was a genius but his reworkings of Jimi Hendrix's tunes seemed to fall flat. I just don't like these arrangements.

Sting’s voice sounds tremendous here
Sting shout too much. Too much ego
You're completely wrong about all of this.
Replacing guitar with a horn is shitting on the writer of the song, Sting fucked up here..
