    This is a very interesting topic. My mom works for a pharmaceutical skin care company here in the States. It's amazing how many "high class" people come to her company to "design" formulations and then market it as their own. It's literally just mixing raw chemicals. You'd be surprised how many lines do this.

    Pat McGrath actually had quads with just her special shades. They were the first quads she ever released. I own all three. And people complained about how expensive they were lol (though they actually weren’t that expensive compared to other brands like Tom Ford and Charlotte Tilbury). And she hasn’t released any quads with special shades since. My guess is that she tried to keep the price relatively low and loss money on them. And then on top of that people STILL complained about the prices.

    Great video. My personal opinion is that, no matter how a brand sources the product, if I like it, I'll buy it. I think sometimes people try to throw around "private labeled" as an insult, just to be a snob. Or, my least favorite, "From China." (I get that in hateful Instagram comments a lot, from people who don't realize half my family lives in Guangzhou.)

    My only thing with wholesale or private labeled formulas is that I end up buying so many literal doubles of shades I already have because I bought from multiple indie or wholesale brands who all use the same private label formula. I wish I had the option of swatching them first, but most indie brands are only sold online.

    • @valentinagelatina
      @valentinagelatina ปีที่แล้ว

      late, but: i think that could happen with bigger brands too, even them duping themselves when they have a lot of palettes. obviously is not the same exact formula but dont we all have shades that act the exact same and look identical from different brands? i think its something normal if you have more than one palette in your collection, and sometimes brands throw three similar shades in only one palette so... i think is something we have to deal with

  • @sallygene
    @sallygene 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Hi. I actually work in private brands, so let me clear some stuff up:
    Firstly, you most likely have hundreds of private-label products in your house right now. Walgreens-brand toilet paper? CVS cotton balls? Target "UpAndUp" makeup remover? Walmart "Great Value" conditioner, Trader Joes moisturizer? Those are all made by the same private-label company. Same with vitamins, food, medicine, diapers, art supplies, cleansers, and anything else that's a store brand. It's all made by the same like 3 private label companies and retailers just put their logo on the packaging. The stores might tweak the formula a bit, but all of those products are produced at the same plants.
    1. Why private labels for makeup? Because it can be very difficult and expensive for a potential brand to locate, vet, and secure an independent laboratory (typically in China) on their own. Private label companies are already established, have a client base, liability insurance, and a record of safety.
    2. Private label brands offer an extremely wide range of services, but it's all still private label. From just picking colors in a catalog to make a palette all the way up to completely reformulating products for their customers. Usually customers start at one end and move up to the more complex/expensive options when they establish themselves.
    3. Private labels will not only work with a customer to reformulate products, they're also constantly working to create new formulas to distinguish themselves as a private-label company. If a customer has a good standing with the private label, they'll be first in line to try out new innovations/reformulations. If they're a good enough customer, a private label company may sign a contract that that original customer gets exclusive rights to the new formula/product for 6 months to a year. After that, all other customers will have a chance to utilize the product.
    4. Angie is mostly right about multiichromes in mainstream makeup. Small, independent companies use multichromes all the time, despite the cost. The huge amount of multichrome pigment that would be ordered by a company like Natasha Denona or TooFaced would greatly offset the costs, making them much more affordable. However, even a small increase in raw material costs would eat into their profits. Typically, a product that retails at $100 has to cost less than $20 to make or a big brand wont gain enough profit to make it worth their time. (4 to 5 times the cost of production is the *bare minimum* of mark-up) Smaller brands are willing to sell a product they spent $60-$70 to produce for that same $100 because they're less concerned about profit and more concerned with innovating/gaining customers/establishing their brand. (They also don't have to pay for storage warehouses, copyright lawyers, insurance, distribution costs, marketing campaigns, healthcare for their employees, etc.)
    5. Most private label companies offer a number of formulas in different price-ranges. If you don't like a palette from a private label, it's more than likely due to the fact that the branded company just chose the cheapest formulation possible. And just because you don't like the formula, that doesn't mean someone else (perhaps younger and less discerning) won't love it.
    Thank you for your time. :)

    Angelica, thank you for explaining why duo, and multi-chome pallet's are so expensive. I thought the hype was why these pallets are so expensive. Also, I didn't know the glitter was the cheapest formula. You have taught me a lot.

    This is such an interesting topic. I am so happy you are speaking about this. I loved to hear your insights from the consumer perspective. As someone working on the back end it was insightful. There are 2 kinds of contract manufacturing - OEM and ODM (if you want I can expand on this). There is absolutely nothing wrong with either of these. It doesn’t matter how big or small a company is, running big manufacturing units is not an easy task by any means. The amount of investment required that goes into the factory apart from the R&D (which is an altogether different project in itself) is massive. It is beneficial for the company to just get contract manufacturing done from a business and financial perspective. ColorPop is on the affordable side because Seed Beauty does contract manufacturing.

    Love your look! I loved this informative video and agree with your thoughts on private label. I've been told by various company owners over the years that the multichrome pigments are very expensive, which is why I think you rarely see mainstream brands use those ingredients. Even in the Natasha Denona Triochromes palette, which I love, they could have used more of the multichrome ingredient to make the shifts stronger.

  • @richardwright9292
    @richardwright9292 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    That is a very good point you made at the end about big brands and securing large quantities of pigments. It also hugely influences which type of shades are more likely to be in limited edition products vs permanent range.
    Pigments are a commodity like any other and the more scarce (either through difficulty in manufacturing or lower demand) then more prone to volatility in price and availability. Some pigments (including a lot of chameleon pigments i.e multichromes) are proprietary and patented - and that affects price/availability quite a bit.
    Then there is things like import duties and anti-monopoly laws that make it more efficient to have a product fully manufactured at a lab/factory rather than import and source individual ingredients for assembly yourself. It varies of course depending by country/region and size of brand or price point. It is not surprising, for example, that Shein sold multichrome products before ColourPop.
    Another point is packaging: lots of brands have similar components and are trending towards cardboard packaging because custom plastic moulding is a hugely expensive investment. That is some of the reason certain products/lines will seemingly never die and keep annoying features like useless brushes. A lot of times brands are accused of 'copying' components but it is usually just a stock component.

    When it comes to private labelling, it really depends on the price. A big issue with the whole Morphe scandal was the giant markup that came with their products compared to how cheaply you could get eyeshadows from the manufacturers they were using. Sure, it's different when you don't know the manufacturer or they don't sell to the public, but ultimately I wouldn't be willing to purchase a 50€ palette knowing the brand only contributed picked out the shades from a catalogue and added packaging.

    Private labeling is really popular in South Korea, cuz they often come out with a whole range of products so independent R&D is impossible, so alot of products from different brands but if made in the same lab/factory, the ingredient is mostly the same, if you could read Korean, it is mentioned on the packaging as well.

    It's not like they HAVE to put a high price tag on a multi chrome quad. It's the fact that they mark up their products to match their insane margins. Because no matter how high quality the eyeshadow is, it's not gonna cost $100+ for ten shadows + $5-$10 packaging. Pat mcgrath and Natasha denona mark up their palettes to create a brand image of luxury and exclusivity. They want everyone to think that their products cost so much but in reality they don't, it's the brand name that costs so much.

I own a ton of Devinah and nyx glitter glue doesn't work well for me but fryinne pixie epoxy is a total game changer I use it everyday use Devinah shades most of the time or Terra Moon I put my makeup on around 6 am it last all day and night till I am ready to take it off and I have hooded eyes

    I don’t mind private labeling - my favorite nail polish, Julep, was private label. (And I’d love to find what other companies are using the formula, damnit.) What I do mind is companies not sharing that they’re private label and just…relying on it. As you note, many tiny indie companies are doing this with duo and multichromes, and it gets frustrating as a consumer - I don’t want five versions of the same “special” shade. Because of this, I tend to avoid those small indie brands. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Thank you for this video. Very informative! I've never actually thought or heard about it, but I totally agree. I work at a factory making electrical stuff and the quality of the product is exactly as our customers (other companies) want it to be. Good or bad - it's their decision ;) Also, slightly off-topic question. I hope it's OK. I'm on a hunt for a good quality silver eyeshadow , no matter shimmer, metallic, foil, single or in a palette. I'm desperate! Would really appreciate the help!

    For pigments it's really interesting to look into another kind of art, in the Netherlands there is a pigment mill it's a historical windmill and they do pigments for painting. Their website has the price of a lot of pigments per 100 gram and there you can see the clear difference in pricing between various pigments. Some blues are made with Lapis Lazuli a gemstone other bleus are like Prussian blue i think you can buy 400 grams of Prussian blue to 100 grams of Lapis Lazuli blue.

    This was a great informative video and you just confirmed my thoughts on many of my options there’s no right or wrong with this topic it just is what it is , yes it sucks that 2 six pan palettes are 125.00 USD but they are all multi chromes which jacked the price to that with the Indie Brand with those two palettes. I can’t pay that but there’s many who can and saving for it isn’t really an option because those types of palettes are normally “ special addition “ I think this video will help many that don’t understand how costs can vary so widely when it comes to multi chrome shadows great video this was awesome to listen to.

    Omg I’m so happy you’re talking about this. Everyone is giving NickiTutorials grief for reviewing Sheglam… but makeup has been sold in Asia that has never been available in the US for years. And everyone is relearning what pressed pigments are… you’re always on it!

      I think people have a problem with her being sponsored by a brand that many consider extremely unethical in comparison with other brands. There is a difference between honestly reviewing something for the clicks and a paid promotion of something. It is clear that someone like Nikki can afford to be picky when it comes to sponsorships and also PR wise it wasn't a smart move because shein/sheglam has been bombarded with criticism lately.

    • @solangepolegar
      @solangepolegar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anjad.3656 Precisely, it had nothing to do with it being private labelled. Some people could have thrown that argument around, but it’s not the core issue. It’s a matter of issues, waste, labour rights, and promoting a mentality in which people buy stuff in bulk because it’s super inexpensive, at the expense of the environment. It’s taking consumerism to an appalling level…

    • @solangepolegar

    • @HanasRoom
      @HanasRoom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@solangepolegar but isn’t all makeup fast makeup? I buy a lot of Japanese makeup, and sheglam is just the Colourpop equivalent in Asia. The arguments I’ve been seeing are more “you can’t trust that it’s good quality because we don’t know where it’s from”… but American brands aren’t the only ones who do private labeling.
      I understand not supporting Fast Fashion, but aren’t makeup channels a place for someone to try something and have fun? I think she just wanted to try something different, mix it up a little bit and give some attention on something more affordable as we all see prices of inflation affect our spending habits.
      Edit: @Anja D… idk if I can tag you, I kinda replied to both in one.
