- EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #87: WILLERBY
Willerby is one of the biggest and most densely populated parishes in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It’s effectively a suburb of Hull, occupying a tract of land that extends west from the city
It wasn’t always this big. Willerby was a small village until the 20th century and urban development has since expanded it towards Hull. The village centre is 5 miles away from Hull city centre
Its situated in an area known as Haltemprice, which was a civil parish in 1858 and became an urban district covering Willerby, Anlaby, Cottingham, Hessle, Kirk Ella, West Ella and Skidby
The Haltemprice name still lives on thanks to the Haltemprice and Howden parliamentary constituency, but here in Willerby, you can also find Haltemprice Priory
Willerby’s features otherwise include a small clock tower on a roundabout known as Willerby Square, the former route of a channel favourite railway line, and a golf course
There’s also some hidden gems just outside the parish boundaries if you know where to look, like a synagogue, a pumping station, and also a recording studio used by a famous name or two
Notable companies from Willerby include the Yorkshire Apiary Company, commissioned to produce temporary buildings after WWII and Willerby Caravan Company was once located on Main Street

Thank you, I grew up in Willerby and moved to New Zealand in 1973, great to see the village again and so many places I explored as a child.
Me too, my grandparents lived there so I knew it pretty well. Not been back in years as we moved to Germany in the late 80's. New Zealand is beautiful hope your happy there!🌞🇬🇧👍

Lived in Chestnut Ave during WW2 - wonder if anyone remembers a German bomb dropping on the other side of Kingston Road? I recall going with a gang of kids to be handed bits of shrapnel handed out by "the big boys"
that's interesting, what sort of area did the bomb go off? I grew up on Chestnut ave in the 90's

Did Nicky ever see Def Leppard live? I saw them at Don Valley Stadium in 1993.
