I'm looking forward to Ad Mortem! It sounds like it has a lot of potential, though I wonder how many options you'll have for combat and customization. Mordhau had relatively fluid, if limited combat. You have your usual swings and stabs, an alternate mode / throw, and a kick. But at the same time you could make whatever kind of build you'd like with the points system and perks. And it was really fun doing things like making a dwarf engineer, two crossbows with tier 3 legs, or packing 15 rocks to throw. Chiv 2 has pretty limited customization, with the set classes and loadouts. But you have so many options in combat that it makes me struggle to go back to Mordhau. Jabs, heavy attacks, specials, meleeing with ranged weapons, objects in the environment, being able to throw everything. In Mordhau I feel it's all about mind games and trying to juke out your opponent, but in Chiv 2 with how strong and versatile your defense can be, every fight feels like you're trying to crack open a nut. I understand why some people might prefer Mordhau but personally I love Chiv 2's combat by far because of that. I can imagine the customization won't be as in depth as Mordhau if they're going for Chivalry's 4 class style, but I'm really curious as to how the combat dynamics will be if both factions have their own 4 classes, especially with no archers and no stamina.

I honestly think it would be awesome if we could make a fighting game that uses the melee mechanics established by these games but for projectiles, like a magic fighting game. 3 spells types for the 3 main attack types, a slow horizontal wave spell (basic slash), a fast vertical slice spell (overhead), and a high damage bolt spell (stab), a block and dodge, instead of counters you would absorb correctly countered spells to shoot back, Spells would follow your reticle (like a laser guided rocket launcher) so you can set up attacks akin to drags. You shoot up in the air, then aim down at your target and the spell curves down and hits your target, taking much longer then they would expect. a special and very fast stun spell, which acts like a kick if they are blocking. All players can use 4 main magical instruments to cast spells that act like the different lengths of melee weapons. A scepter (polearms), a staff (two handed large weapons), a wand (one handed weapons), or a pendant (fist weapons). the size would determine the overall size and speed of your spells, but also what ethereal weapons can emit from it for melee, like a staff can emit a very large blade to act like a greatsword, while a pendant would emit ethereal spiked gauntlets around your hands. No neutral special attacks though, all my homies hate neutral special attacks. Special attacks that have some sort of prior action I'm fine with, like sprinting specials. And obviously it would have an actual melee aspect too that's just as in depth, and due to melee's limited range it's more powerful than fighting with projectiles if you're willing to get close.

I think the term would be "Dark" fantasy rather than low. But as someone who loves having cool lore in his games this sounds pretty fucking awesome. Looking forward to it! Please do cover it when you can get your hands on it.
I wish Chiv 2 actually made the player feel invested into the different factions. Starting out it was cool, but you realize pretty quickly that lore was an afterthought after the 10th retaliatory ransacking.

First off, I love and find it hilarious that you made no mention of all the other "melee" games out there (For Honor, Vermintide, etc). They all made their own twist on the melee genre, but none of them attempt to go further than the power trip horde slashing fantasy. I've been looking for a while for a game that doesn't pull this off. Chiv 2 clearly suffers from neglect to address bugs and ways to improve upon it. From what I understand they're satisfied with combat and hey're purely focused on dishing out new maps and cosmetics for content. I'll stick around if they ever bother with the bugs, but Ad Mortem does give me hope. Hearing you explain it in depth has given me hope that they care and that they have you to listen to. As such, I look forward to seeing its progress and your honest thoughts. In all seriousness, I'm just so sick of all these spinoffs achieving nothing or a stupid twist to appease the goofy kids
For Honor is a fighting game, not a melee game and there is a distinct difference between the two. Vermintide could have a case for it being a melee game but ultimately it's a lot less involved and more about the horde aspect.

The game sounds like a good. more fantasy oriented version of For Honor! With some great mix ups. Because for honor is half dead with some lazy addings of shitty characters rn.
Yeah I wish I could play more medieval fighting or slasher games, as a console player can say we don't have too many of these, they recently realized mordhau 4 consoles, chivalry2 and for honor, but that's about it, I wish developers eventually realize this game for consoles, maybe like they did with mordhau whatever it takes to them to make a good game for everyone, good luck to them

Ziggy, do you personally want Ad Mortem to be locked to any perspective? Or do you want players to have the liberty of switching between first and third person? They already showed a picture in the fp perspective on their website, so I'm assuming it's going to be a feature. I personally enjoy fp as it allows for more immersion, so I hope tp doesn't gives an edge over fp players like it does in Chivalry 2 since it kind of incentivizes playing in tp over fp. If that were the case, I would rather there only be a fp perspective. Then again, the opposite is going on in Mordhau where fp largely is seen as superior to tp, so my worries might be for naught.
Third person can be there with first person without overshadowing it. Chivalry 2's third person is very powerful due to camera position, distance and how poorly made first person is. I am almost 100% certain that First Person will be the priority of Ad Mortem with a third person mode that will be kept in check as to keep first person the main way to play.
Maybe its because i'm a schizophrenic but I do hope they make immersion/weight of the game feel as conscious in its atmosphere similar to Dark souls 1, KCD or even Chiv 2 in the sense that everything feels somewhat alive and impactful. I hope you can recommend the importance of conscious/intentional atmosphere to him ziggy, i feel good things about the backstory but its all in the execution, what would kill the immersion is if it was very video gamey like For Honour or smthn...hope that makes sense.
Contingent looks like "big mordhau"...but with no gameplay??? The only combat detail I've revealed is that dragging won't be a thing (which is already a massive divergence from Mordhau)
I do like the reference to TF2 for class diversity, but TF2 has its own problems with generalists and specialists (atleast in comp where the starting team line up is always 2 scouts, 2 soldiers, 1 demo, and 1 med)
Honestly what I want most would be something like a virtual reality multi-player version of something like blade and sorcery, with fully accurate armor hitboxes and whatnot. That would be a good way to replicate HEMA but actually be able to stab your opponents, stare into their eyes as they die as one tends to do. It could also make ranged combat a more respected option, as it's much harder to aim a bow in vr than in an fps with crosshairs.
I don't really see how it is possible. Like, how do you actually make parrying in this game? It might be counter-intuitive, but I think keyboard and mouse are better suited for making a multiplayer melee game than vr.
@@サリエリ-q5g well existing multilayer mods for blade and sorcery provides the collision and blade impact shifting for parries to maybe kind of work. I'm not by any means saying it would be easy to do, but it would be a waste of the technology if we didn't at least give it a chance

Crush valued his coke habit over Mordhau being a playable game. I think it'd be fun if someone just mostly ripped off chiv 2's combat(because it's mostly good) and tried to figure out how to solve the jab problem, because I don't think "no stam" is actually good or bad. It's just different. Chiv 2's stam metagame is interesting and fun and allows new players to extend fights effectively to introduce themselves to combat against players much much better than them without being so quickly overwhelmed that they cannot even comprehend how they died, and that improved feedback is maybe the single most important part of held parry. I'm honestly most excited about "long term progression" and "fun co-op" than I am about Ad Mortem as a competitive game, because that's difficult to do and extremely rewarding if they succeed. I like games with high skill expression, but I don't necessarily like to "play them as a truly competitive game". That's why it took me so long to join a clan in Chiv 2. Me joining Pax was an expression of extreme frustration at the inability to join a strong lobby the way I could in TF2 for a long time and just kinda semi-autopilot, chill, and enjoy the mechanics I'm poking around with, and then continuing to play comp is because it's fun to play with friends moreso than I have great love for the formats. It's going to be interesting to see how Ad Mortem solves for that.
I can understand wanting something truly new mechanically but I don't think its going to happen at least anytime soon the DNA of chiv is like the base code for all melee fps games like how Doom is for shooters. Also LOL rank 2300 cudgel god thanks for the laugh
I disagree that they gave up on the lore there's new and cool lore it's just no one really talks about it I love looking at all the lore and connecting all the dots but I had to go looking for all of it and chivalry 2 just doesn't have that big lore guy that make a timeline or lore videos
Absolver is a unique beast and For Honor is a fighting game. Melee games have the characteristic of providing individual control over the melee weapon, while also having movement not tied to the melee attacks. Dark Souls for example locks movement when attacking. Chivalry does not.
I wish they'd stop making multiplayer games using this system, a game like first person Dragon's Dogma/Skyrim with Chiv 2 or Mordhau's combat would probably kill the competition, there's mount and blade but that's different.
I've been thinking about this one as well for some time now. Mordhau, and everything like it, is just so bland. No disrespect to Counter Strike, but if that's just "dudes with guns" then Mordhau and games like it are just "dudes with swords". Chiv, on the other hand, has a theme that sticks out a lot more, not to mention its own identity with all the silly Monty Python shit that happens. The only reason any of that stuff is in Mordhau is because it was in Chiv 1. Torn Banner's success was more than just making a game that played fun, but a game that was fun all around (well, until some asshole twirls seventeen times in a second :P)
Am i the only who finds "we have analyzed the issues with ranged weapons..." kind of passive aggressive? I read that andmy first thought was "Oh yes, i have also 'analyzed' the issue..." as i recalled all the times i tripped over arrows. In any case, i look forward to seeing this game complete
Just imagine dark and Darker but based on Chivalry 2's game mechanics. PvEvP would be so cool in chivalry. Btw war of the roses was pretty jank. First of all it was 3rd person only, which I dislike for chivalry likes. Funnily enough, for souls games, it's fine. And the winning strategy was to spam attack manipulations I dislike even more than chivalry's and completely circumvent their intended combat mechanics.. Not great. They had great visuals, finishing animations etc though.
you forgot to mention Kingdom Come: Deliverance when you mentioned melee games at the start there. Its a wonderful singleplayer narrative driven game with a really good and unique combat system. Can get it with gamepass, was also free on Epic for a while, highly recommend. also the melee genre has ZERO future in the multiplayer portion. It just isnt sustainable or profitable in the long or even medium term. casuals wont stick around no matter how hard you try to keep them, and casuals are the actual money makers, not the super sweats who are really passionate about the game, as they are a micro-minority.
I think Mordhau and Chivalry 2 can be garbage in the ways that they are for so long because they just don't really have competition. Hopefully this is a first step in the right direction.
Doubtful, maybe far in the future but I wouldn't hold hope for that. It'd be best to maybe look into getting a PC, which is not as expensive as people make it out to be. It's only slightly higher than the price of a current gen console if you know what you're doing.
I feel like "Mordhau but __" is blowing up because Mordhau's still pretty fun at the end of the day. The combat system's got plenty of inherent flaws, but I still look back fondly on it, and I don't think Chiv 2's combat system is what makes it better than Mordhau. High level dueling is weird in both games and comes down to taste imo, but Chiv 2 provides way more varied content for the average player's experience. I think it'd help the video if you touched specifically on what "the inherent flaws of Mordhau" are that you're hoping the genre avoids, instead of saying "Chivalry 2 is the only game that isn't Mordhau, and Mordhau is bad".
There is nothing about melee combat. I can mash lmb in csgo with my knife, not needed in another super unbalanced shitty designed game with shittiest combat ever.
I think the future of the genre is hopeless right now for 2 reasons: most devs are still obsessed with souls combat, probably more than ever thanks to Elden Ring. Second: the template clearly isn't working. Both Mordhau and Chiv 2 "sold" well, but only by genre standards, they are extremely niche and people either drop them or became obsessed and put in hundreds of hours. It's not a quality issue, it's development choices. The game you mention sounds like all the other similar indie games that aim big and usually don't even live long enough to reach early access
I think what this genre truly needs is innovation, all the games that aim to have this type of combat system are basically trying to make the same game but they are still too fixated on mordhau and chiv. Magic for example. Enchanted weapons with elemental and whatever effects. Co-op against monster hunter type bosses, cavalry charge at a dragon or a giant. These are just generic ideas but first person melee game have sooooo much more potential than two sides rushing at each other on badly scaled battlefields with a handful of people. I like the idea of chiv but they are still chasing the past and dream so little
See I hear a lot of mordhau trash talk, I have about the same amount of time played in both and I have way more fun in mordhau and I honestly thought chiv 2 was not nearly as fun.
Hear youtuber talk about melee game Love melee genre TH-camr compares lore to dark souls Says melee sistem sounds cool Tired as hell from Chiv 2 ass servers Get excited for game i did not even heard about before "Only for pc" :(
Dude i was a watching a vid of yours then we ended in the same lobby lol by chance then you got off not even mid game and i was sad 😢 didnt get to go agaisnt you enougj
Souls does not because it's animation-locked. You can't move and attack and you don't have control over the attack very much. For Honor is more like Street Fighter than it is a melee game.
Honestly this genre needs more competition since it has potential to be possibly the next big genre. I applaud the guys making Ad Mortem because no one else is trying to innovate or improve.
I remember buying Mordhau years ago just for the lutebot, but my pc wasnt good enough for lutebot to work
Tragic.
@@Ziggylata Yeah. Never played the game again after that. It was quite a bit of money down the drain.
Maybe its because i'm a schizophrenic but I do hope they make immersion/weight of the game feel as conscious in its atmosphere similar to Dark souls 1, KCD or even Chiv 2 in the sense that everything feels somewhat alive and impactful. I hope you can recommend the importance of
conscious/intentional atmosphere to him ziggy, i feel good things about the backstory but its all in the execution, what would kill the immersion is if it was very video gamey like For Honour or smthn...hope that makes sense.
I just want Chivalry 3.. lol
Contingent looks like "big mordhau"...but with no gameplay??? The only combat detail I've revealed is that dragging won't be a thing (which is already a massive divergence from Mordhau)
I saw a gameplay clip somewhere. It was probably old. I'm happy to be proven wrong.
@@Ziggylata there's old gameplay (before my involvement) but that gameplay was a m&b lookalike
I'll do another video when it's got something to show for it.
Does anyone know if they’ve said it will be first and third person like Chiv 2 is? Or will it be some weird hybrid or anything like that?
Probably first person mainly, might have a third person camera as well.
Very excited for a fantasy melee, curious to see the Ai! Good coverage thanks for putting it on the radar
"The first person melee genre" *Plays in third person*
xd
Music slaps
I do like the reference to TF2 for class diversity, but TF2 has its own problems with generalists and specialists (atleast in comp where the starting team line up is always 2 scouts, 2 soldiers, 1 demo, and 1 med)
Ziggylata video essay? noic
Ziggy, you should play Bulwark. It's a sword dueling game on Roblox inspired by Chivalry 2 & Mordhau but has it's own unique feel and gameplay.

It's going to be interesting to see how Ad Mortem solves for that.
jab problem?
@@サリエリ-q5g jabs are just too good, but you need to have a way to make 1hs not incredibly fucked up so jabs exist.
I can understand wanting something truly new mechanically but I don't think its going to happen at least anytime soon the DNA of chiv is like the base code for all melee fps games like how Doom is for shooters.
Also LOL rank 2300 cudgel god thanks for the laugh
It sounds awesome, i hope the launch goes well and they consider a console port somewhere down the line. Would love to run solo co-op.
Games like these make me wanna switch from console to pc
Worth looking into.
I disagree that they gave up on the lore there's new and cool lore it's just no one really talks about it I love looking at all the lore and connecting all the dots but I had to go looking for all of it and chivalry 2 just doesn't have that big lore guy that make a timeline or lore videos
I think I might make a lore video once all the maps are out. Theres not enough lore for Chivalry 2 right now.
Absolver and For Honor should also be included imo
Absolver is a unique beast and For Honor is a fighting game.
Melee games have the characteristic of providing individual control over the melee weapon, while also having movement not tied to the melee attacks. Dark Souls for example locks movement when attacking. Chivalry does not.
@@Ziggylata ah, so youre reffering to games that let you control your legs indepentendtly of your weapon?
I wish they'd stop making multiplayer games using this system, a game like first person Dragon's Dogma/Skyrim with Chiv 2 or Mordhau's combat would probably kill the competition, there's mount and blade but that's different.
I played against you several times from the past few days. It was fun
Good video ziggy
Imagine if chivalry added like a blunderbuss or flintlock type weapon😂 I think it would be fun to kill archers with
Just imagine dark and Darker but based on Chivalry 2's game mechanics.
Just bought the game a few days ago, it's very good
What platforms will the game be on?
Steam.
I think Mordhau and Chivalry 2 can be garbage in the ways that they are for so long because they just don't really have competition. Hopefully this is a first step in the right direction.
what are your thoughts on for honor
Extremely not fun.
really informative. didn't know about half of these games.
I poop my pants
Game headed by Giru along with no dedicated archer/marksman class? Just take my money
Lowkey makes me hope you pickup game development and throw your hat into the ring.
Wait… Bob Sapp is a QA tester?
I like the sound of it, but I do love 64p, from the sounds of your video it doesn't sound like they're targeting that scale? More for honor like
They might expand the player count later.
ziggy do you play on cross platform servers? I’m on Xbox and my god I want to play with you so bad please
Edit: ad Mortem looks fantastic
They're all cross platform.
There’s an option to turn off cross platform but maybe it’s only for console i dunno
Bias AF, but I hope AD mortem becomes real
Does Blade and Banner II count as Mordhow?
Perhaps.
Do you think there will ever be a melee game that is not heavily ping dependent?
Not for larger scale battles, but maybe for smaller things like dueling.
Game seems nice
Yk, for honor
Okay so I'm not the only one who thought Mordhau had shitty gameplay
price?
Probably not 60 dollars.
anti smurf?? im in
Do you think they’ll be any chance of this being on console?
I think it'd help the video if you touched specifically on what "the inherent flaws of Mordhau" are that you're hoping the genre avoids, instead of saying "Chivalry 2 is the only game that isn't Mordhau, and Mordhau is bad".
mordhau is absolute sh1t
Hopefully you get to play it early and can give some insight. I'm interested in it now
Explain why minecraft pvp is bad
Dark and darker is pretty good.
I like the idea of chiv but they are still chasing the past and dream so little
It remains to be seen.

Sorry, friend.
Does For Honor and Souls series fit in this genre?
For honors more of a fighting game than a sword slasher.
Souls does not because it's animation-locked. You can't move and attack and you don't have control over the attack very much.
For Honor is more like Street Fighter than it is a melee game.
No, none of the above
