First video on Exanima where guy knows how to play it)
A lot of people treat it like it's goofy and funny game (ofc it may be that sometimes) but it is actually really deep.
And thanks for sharing your thoughts, good video!
That's pretty much because they don't have the patience to adapt their minds and muscle memory to what is basically a completely unique genre of game that they have never experienced before, so they don't realize that good-looking and skillful fights are possible and assume that all fights look like drunken hooligans at 3AM
the first time i found that key was hilarious. was running from 3 guys i pissed off and found myself in that room. it being my first time i was ass at combat. tripped over the table and after the fight i saw it on the floor xD. my top 3 games of all time due to the amount of effort and dedication the devs have to make a fantastic experiance.
Yes! The devs of Exanima truly work their arses off to make all of this work and it is still just as impressive as it was when the alpha dropped. No other game does physicsnearly as well, by a long, long shot. You have to play to understand.
I worked for them for the 2D Art spell icons for a few years (but I ended up failing on them, due to IRL problems.. Someone else is going to make them. Maybe you'll find my weird tarrot deck somewhere in the darkness, draw cards at your own risk) and they are very cool people, real kind and so invested in what they do.
Great video Ziggylata, I remember you mentionned the game a few times in the past^^
You are the dude who made the cards?? I love you maaaan!
@@Salvo04 Thanks my man, glad you enjoyed them
In their last video they showed their new improvements on their physics engine. Now they have one of the best cloth physics in the market and solved all their major problems (clipping between object and infinite slipping objects) with their engine. This game will become something very special in the near future.
@@Exozik like how madoc said it would be near impossible to find a solution and comes up with a solution right after lmao
@@Salvo04 Yep. These guys are just exceptional at what they are doing.
Great video, it was a nice surprise and welcome change of pace to your usual content, Exanima is such a fantastic game already and it isn’t even finished yet!
I love it, but was raging so hard the first time I tried that I'm just watching from sidelines till I grow up to bear it
Not finished? Is it still being regularly updated? Asking because it says the game is from 2015. Just started playing it
@@nace9924 yea it just got a update a couple days ago, its at version 9.0.5 now i think
i think its just a super small team so progress is slow
its so fun tho i havent even played much of the story just playing the shit out of the arena mode
I've been playing this game for ages. One of my favorite games as well. So much so I've delved into the modding scene, had in depth lore discussions with others, and replayed countless times.
This review of the game, though brief, is perfect and touches on the many aspects of the game I have come to adore.
Thank you for adding more attention to this fantastic game, and expanding the player base to others.
Madoc and his crew should be very proud with their work and innovation.
the top comment on the steam review page is about the dev crying cause ppl mod the game, how true is that?
@sakezakk I am/was involved with the modding scene of Exanima. We have our own Discord server with thousands of members, including the developers themselves.
There is a private chat that only modders and devs can access, and Madoc is quite active discussing tech with modders and has recently made changes, actively making it easier to mod the game.
So no, I've never seen the devs upset that people use their fantastic engine to create mods for Exanima.
@@BomeYo thanks, that review singlehandedly made me not buy the game, I hate it when ppl lie like that, change of plans I guess
There's a modding scene? WHERE?! I can barely find anything for this game outside of a health regen mod and some other peoples saves.
2:49 this is tangential but unrecorded looks so realistic because the camera is so stylized. The low shaky resolution is so close to bodycams and GoPros that it looks like real life footage. Most stylized games drop realism for strong art design but that game stylized the other way around.
Sui Generis means "of it's own kind" (as you said), and Examina means "devoid of life"
I think this kind of fits the dark fantasy setting with the ominous and dark lore
Great video essay, well done man
Fr dude
This is the best video on Exanima I have ever seen. Playing it for 2 years now, and it's very exciting seeing the development. The combat is the most satisfying I have ever experienced. Exanima deserves way more attention. thx for the vid!
I didn't expect this kind of video from you, I'm really disappointed.... THAT YOU DIDN'T DO THAT SOONER! Really cool vid
One of my favourite things in exanima when i play is the heft of the weapons. Most games the attack are already animated, and often feel weightless (like elder scrolls where you kind of just slice a bunch of times till things die), but exanima is different, wielding a 2 handed mace for example you feel the emmense weight, the swing lacks control and lots of effort is put in to swing, but if you land a hit you see the enemy recoil against the hit, and if the swing is heavy enough they can stumble and fall. It seems like a small detail but it makes combat so much better, your weapon feels real and powerful and makes you feel like your actually dealing damage, sure it all well and good dealing damage and a healthbar goes down, but in exanima when you hit an enemy and they fall to the floor, you dont need a healthbar to tell you you did some DAMAGE.
What I love about exanima is the natural critical hit, when I brain an enemy with a mace, capillary blood spraying and bones crunching. It's such a visceral feeling, and the fact that it's not random but just a good strike at the right time is just... an amazing experience
Ziggy, you knocked it out of the park with this one! I can’t wait to see what you cook up next
I was expecting this video to be about the combat system, as nearly every other video is on this game (aside from the non-serious ones) but i am delighted to see that it isnt. this is a game that changed my entire view on gaming as a whole, nothing will give me the same shivers that Exanima did, still does and will do even after four hundred hours
im glad this video is made to such high quality and especially on this gem of gems
Really good video. I've been orbiting this game for a few years now. This has finally convinced me to get it and there's no regrets. Its really cool. You really have a grasp on how to structure your more talk-y videos. Like your poleaxe and polehammer ones. These i sometimes watch just because its fun to hear you talk. Your points are well structured and delivered, which makes these videos a delight. I'm sure you'll have a bright future in the realm of video essays. Best of luck!
I'm still amazed that this game worked fine on my old Dual Core, specially for being a physics based game
I've been playing Exanima on and off for a few years now and with the recent implementation of force thaumaturgy has once again pulled me into it. I've never really played anything like this and am excited to see Sui Generis once it's fully finished. Awesome video man, you've earned a subscription!
Exceptionally well made video essay in perfect condition.
I bought this game a couple months ago, and very soon I've noticed that's around 100h already. It might be much more, but work...
I could highly recommend to try it.
It's a first game for a really long time when you can feel the same way as in deep childhood when someone gave you their controller or keyboard+mouse and you even don't know how to walk in the game, how to jump, how to fight, how to move camera. Everything from the starch. It's an amazing feeling.
it's truly disappointing how many people will refuse to give this game a try, or even attempt at learning the combat mechanics. it's more simple than you think. easy to learn, hard to master. and man, it feels... sooo good when you master it.
"I have high taste in games and I value quality and integrity a lot"
That is one heck of a bold statement coming from the lad who flashed his 2000~ hours of Chivalry 2 previously in the video.
There's a really good game underneath I swear
As an Exanima player, THANK YOU. Thank you for making a video on this game. The more people who know about it, the better.
Amazing video! I've never been able to get a handle on the controls of this game, but I have a deep appreciation for it! This video only adds to that.
Yess! BareMettle deserves all the shine and I'm always glad to see them get some airtime! Anytime these new physic based games come out I'm constantly thinking of this gem!
What An amazing edit here ziggy! ❤
Wonderful video essay. Incredibly informative and well animated. Looking forward to more videos like this!
FIrst time ive seen a video say "Published 23 seconds ago"
I'd like to throw my vote in for _Boneworks_ as a non-comedy, fully physics-based game. Especially since, because it's in VR, the extra control over your character allows you to get REALLY creative. Out of spots to holster a weapon? Squeeze it between your character's body and arm. Platform too high to reach, even while jumping? Grab onto some kinda hook-shaped object and use that to extend your reach. Object on some high shelf you can't reach? Grab a long object and sweep the top of the shelf to knock it off. There's so many "holy shit, I can't believe that really worked!" moments in the game, thanks to everything being physics-based. Also a lot of jank, thanks to everything being physics-based.
I should play that.
I have an exanima music Playlist that I make my gf listen to with me in the car. Thumping the arena theme, fortitude, and oresum while I boogie woogie woogie.
Love the new direction you're going man, and great video, I have like an hour in exanima but this makes me want to jump back in to master the controls.
Great video essay! This kind of longer, insightful and more edited videos must take a lot of effort to put out, but after seeing this one, I believe they will pay off
One of few games that passed "try before you buy" trial for me, and sole game I keep returning to on new updates with the same amount of pleasure as the first time.
Quality video, Ziggy. You seem to really put a lot of effort into it, thanks.
9:16 this bit of the video gives off massive Max0r vibes, love where the channel is going from here on
Great video! Excited to see what other kinds of essays you've got cooking up
I think this might be your year. I'm so excited for Exanima/Sui Generis. Great coverage!
After glancing at a stream of you playing Exanima, I checked it out and thought id give it a try out of curiosity, not to mention that I was looking for a good medieval combat game. I am so glad i did! The game is quite difficult but once you figure it out it is so satisfying to see the progress! I will say though between learning the combat, navigating the story mode dungeon, and just trying not to die in general, made playing quite stressful at times. It did make it hard to find the will to jump into it when the stress of college and work was really killing me, but hey, that hardly makes it a bad game, in fact I'd say that made the experience a lot more authentic and satisfying! In fact, think they also deserve credit for making the game this authentic, on top of its innovative use of physics and new style of gameplay, the store page describes it as an "unforgiving 3D isometric RPG set in an original dark, low fantasy world." That is exactly what we get and it is awesome! It may not appeal to everyone but it is not trying to be a game for everyone and the fact that it sticks with its theme makes it that much better!
Great video Ziggy, this game really deserves more attention than it has gotten and I look forward to seeing this game approach completion. I also look forward to seeing more video essays like this!
I only can second that. He really earned that sub!
In addition, the armor and weapon design are mostly realistic, not always in the meaning of real, historical equipments, but in the sense that they could work in our world. Very fitting for a game based on physics.
Hope the algorithm picks this up. Genuinely great video and I would love for you to be encouraged to do this more
I like the new style of content and I’m excited for what you create next
Great video. That GTAIII scored intro gave me alot of nostalgia 👍
Fell off a bridge trying to avoid graveguard, ggwp
Between this video and GillGamesHello's videos I really think Exanima is finally getting the attention it deserves!! Love ur video ziggylata!
Great video, I tried this game when it first came out and didn't get it at all lol. You explain the mechanics very clearly, so i'll give it another shot sometime.
Appreciate the shoutout to Exanima. Ive put so many hours into this game. Its one of my favorite games and i hope this video gives it another popularity boost!
Kickass video! Exanima is such a treasure of a game, but super underrated, It's one of the few games I have almost 1000 hours in and still actually want to keep playing.
The combat is just so satisfying and fun that I'm pretty sure 99% of my playtime is just fighting in the arena mode
Great content Ziggy! Can't wait to see the direction and quality you're aiming towards.
Great video. I’ve seen clips of this game before, but this video convinced me to try it out for myself.
I was gonna skip the patreon ad but you hit me with that postal 2 music so I had to stay for it. Also exanima is fucking awesome I've been playing it for years and it just gets better. all steps forward, none back in terms of updates.
If your outlets aren't grounded, then all the electricity stays in the PC and things run faster.
Oh true!!
loved it man, keep up like this and you are going to see your subscribers skyrocket
racing games are what I first think of when it comes to 'physics based games' - especially historically
but the primary thinking is because of their primary historical placement, most namely, and you're missing out if you have not played it, absolutely, one of the greatest games ever:
Interstate '76
also:
Need for Speed II SE was probably my first experience with gut-pulling physics applied exceptionally in a video game (pre-I'76)
I purchased Exanima in May of 2015, had not touched it in years until you brought it up last year.
Thanks for the history lesson I didn't know I wanted, probably still don't want, but I'll tolerate anyway because the underlying info was neat and you did a good job of not going overboard with the throw-away gags.
I'll pop in to say pointless nonsense in your twitch at some point when I can pry my arms away from carving gems from monsters in Monster Hunter World.
Exanima is a game I've been harping on about to anyone I can for a very long time now.
It's very satisfying to see more people online gaining an interest in it; because the game is bloody spectacular.
If you've ever played Team Fortress 2 for example, you can get on the game, pick the Soldier class and do merely what is obvious with him, run around slowly, shoot your rocket launcher occasionally and not have a very great time really. Until you come to discover something like rocket jumping, the game has long since provided the obvious mechanic that you can damage and displace yourself with your own rocket launcher but with a bit of technique you refine it until you become the most mobile shock-and-awe class in the game through rocket-jumping.
Exanima is much the same, to attack, you left click, BOOM, that's it. No really. Left click to swing... But, left click while moving your mouse left-to-right and you swing in the other direction, swing your cursor by their feet to sweep their ankles, aim high to go for the head, the level of engagement you get from one button is astronomical. And it's not the only only button even. I couldn't fit all my thoughts into a youtube comment really but the game has incredible depth, and the devs just keep digging with every major update. Sui Generis has to be one of my most anticipated games because of this, if the devs apply nearly the same level of depth in this little dungeon crawler into a full-fledged RPG then it's sure to be one of the greatest games ever made. And more people need to know about this. Money needed for game dev, plz gib to Madoc thnx.
I 100% agree. I play games since 1985. Exanima has the best physics model, best immersion factor and best fights I have ever encountered.
i really like that direction of your channel!
Nice work on this one zig. Excited to see more.
and the physics are just getting better. been following sui generis and exanima for years
i love video essays. i always rewatch them a few times
Didn’t know I needed a video essay from Ziggylatta 🙏
You know, I’m sold. I’ve never heard of this game before, but simply seeing this, it has piqued my interest enough.
Good video :)
Played this game for ever, it is amazing, just missing coop! Great video thank you
this is a legit fantastic video, great stuff!
i was just about to ask when the examina was gonna get released! well done

This game is truly incredible, I've been playing it for years, can't wait for the next update this devs cook good shit
Good video hope to see a couple more exanima streams in the future
Honestly I’d just be willing to play it for the sick historically accurate 15th century armour
Great essay, very informative and well researched. Happy to see more people talking about Exanima, it's one of the most underrated games ever.
You just put me on so heavy ty bro great vid
aight I wasn't prepared for a video essay but I was convinced to try this game out soon.
Video essays on top of great commentary, ill gladly stick around
Great video!! Thank you for not censoring yourself.
Super cool Ziggy. I've never been inspired to get a game as much as I have now lol, the game sounds epic and I'll likely be getting it tomorrow. Thanks for sharing
Did you get it?
really well put together video.
It actually makes me angry on how underrated Exanima really is
should make a vid about manor lords, the fact that a game made by a single person already achieved more in it's alpha version (the game is not even out yet) then some AAA games is crazy
A game and concept that simply could never be produced by a big box developer.
absolutely would have not been done. This is a passion project, that takes way too long for triple A to ever have that kind of patience.
Easily my most anticipated game of all times. The Day exanima hits 1.0 will be incredible. And then, the day they add coop to it... Oh boy. I don't know if you have seen, but their latest video on Cloth Simulation is insane, mind-blowingly insane even. This game is the prime example of a dev team saying "We'll do something actually new and unique".
EDIT: one of the things that make exanima so unique is their attitude towards all of the 'janky workarounds' that have become standards in gaming. "HitBoxes? We don't do that here. How'd you like actual body collisions instead?"
I'm sure this'll be your year for content creation, zigster. Though, I wouldn't beat yourself up about your previous years. Looking forward to your new content outside Chivalry.
easily one of your best videos yet!
BROOOO!! You can put objects in buckets!? I'm sold! Pumping 10k hours in now!
Incredibly concise and well spoken video, I'm super impressed.
Also funny teehee
Glad you shared this. Def will be checking this out.
Go for it zig man. You got this. Research thorougly and i really see you doing great essays like this one you just posted. Looking forward to it
Exanima is a game I constantly go back to. Easily one of the most difficult but most rewarding game that I've played. I really cannot wait for the full games release.
this game does so many things right, im hopeful the spell system is more fleshed out but i do love the use of darkness, the shiny scales of the mutants mimicing reflecting water on the sewers, thinking of function of weapons instead of stats, a mace is a blunt shortranged onehanded weighted head weapon not a 1d6 blundgeon, instead death pits are worst part of game
could list on and on about awesome exanima features but people should just play it
"This game does not aim to have realistic graphics", while in almost every single so called "realistic graphics game", every single object shines for no reason, every object has stupid reflection, there are nonsense water puddles in every corner to show off how "realistic" it is. Well Exanima has really great realistic graphics from what I played and seen.
It's very good, highly detailed, but not too overly bright which was a problem I noticed in some games in the last 10 years.
Thank you ziggylata, very cool!
This is an absolute banger, great work!
Absolutely adore the video, exanima is a game very close to my heart
Cant wait to see more vids like this one :)
no wonder I die so much when I mean the shortest skinnyfat I can build
Exanima’s AI reminds me of Rain World if you want to try that out, has the world built around the environment and not the character, like interaction between NPCs with other things that I think you might enjoy.
Exanima? In the year of our lord 2024? Hell yeah.
All right, you've sold me on it! I'll pick Exanima up.
Armadillo Run was quite an excellent game back in the day. Physics based
The idea BM would finish SG in a year is incredibly funny. You can't spell "scope" without "cope" after all.
I can dream.
I love this game, in the mechanics, as in the atmosphere, the theme. The graphics are beautiful, even though I'm on an old computer. I play on minimum, and the graphics are comparable to AAA games with a smooth FPS. I can't wait for the other thaumaturgical powers to be added as well as a version to play in multiplayer in LAN or else. Thank you for having creating such a beautiful game Bare Mettle. ( I poured 3 days worth in 4 days )
actually really good video. thanks for sharing ur thoughts!
Def has a good dark souls feel to it. I'll have to check it out. Good video.
