  • I dug out my 20 year old map of Big Lake (Calcasieu) while down there recently and decided to give newcomers a heads up while I was studying it for the next day's trip. However, I do recommend hiring a guide at least once on Calcasieu. But if you can't, maybe this will help a little. Just understand that this is a VERY shallow lake with many underwater obstructions...and that I'm no expert. Not in the least bit. Hopefully, this helps someone. BluzGuitar Guy Fishing Antics- Hello, I enjoy your videos, my wife and I are retiring back to Lake Charles. buying boat to fish the big lake area. I was wondering how you like your Kenner, what size is it? Thank You.

Hi Dean. Thanks for watching. As for the Kenner, mine is an 18 foot with a tunnel hull ( to be able to run in VERY shallow water). Of course I love it...as it took me nearly a year to find this particular model. It's crowded, for sure , being only 18 ft...but the hull itself is very light, which is what I wanted. ( 995 bs) Bill Kenner now makes the Blackjack and Frontier lines of boats now, as he sold out the Kenner brand. It's no longer being made, so if you find an old one, be prepared to invest a great deal of work and money in it before it's seaworthy. If you can find a good solid 21 ft. kenner with a tunnel, I'd buy it. The 23 foot Kenners are VERY rare and sought after now days and you'll pay a premium for them...although I dont think they come with a tunnel. I'll probably order a new Blackjack at some point in the future...but they aren't cheap.

This has been very informative to me. I am familiar with much of this area and I will have to check out some of these places you show in the video very soon. Thank you.

I'm glad it helped someone. Since I made that video, we have decided NOT to hide our fishinbg spots on the rest of our videos. There's plenty of fish for everyone. In the next video coming out, the one I'm editing now, we TELL you exactly where we are in each clip. All we ask, is for you to give us a friendly wave , if we run into you while on the water. After all, we're all just trying to have fun and pick up a few fish. Tight lines and stay safe !

Thanks, I have been wanting to get back into the salt water fishing for a while now. I have actually fished some of the places you talk about. Especially around Cameron like next to the ferry crossing on the west side or, the rocks by the boat ramp near the fishing pier. Be looking for you. Be safe.

Thanks for the reply. I was raised in Lake Charles and Know the nightmare of getting stuck in the marshes and cuts when in larger draft , heavier boats. Just a little rusty on boat brands these days , my La. fishing and hunting days were some time ago. How about something on artificial baits for big lake and rigging of same. What are you using. I notice Deb was using some type of artificial twist tail on a float """? Do you fish that static under the float. Just wondering as live shrimp can be hard to come by and costly. I plan to fish from the ( new to me) calcasieu point or the old Hebert’s launch.

Lake area Marine ought to be able to help you with boat brands these days. As for artificials, I'm planning on a video about them soon...but by no means am I any type of great fisherman...chuckle. I prefer artificial bait myself and use a lot of GULP, norton sand eels, egrit baits, down south lures, etc. But Gulp seems to work best, although they dont last, like they used to. My suggestion is to book a trip with Jeff Poe and you'll learn more in 4 hours from him than I could ever teach you. Heck, you probably already know more than I do, if you once lived there. We fish for fun, because I love to see Deb catch them. She likes Gulp swimming mullet or live shrimp.

I hear you...it's an old one. I think my friend sold it to me in 1997 or so.
