Free advise from an architectural historian for the lalande team: bricks are one of the oldest building materials in the world. Bricks existed in the C16, the Romans built in brick (see the baths of Caracalla for an amazing example), and even older buildings than that exist. The bricks in this little clip are very thin and look hand made to me, they could well be C16. By the C19 bricks were fare more standardised in their size (industrialised production begins), similar to our modern bricks. You can get a tiny 3D Scanner down there that records the room properly and allows you to analyse and virtually reconstruct with an expert what this space was. If you do that (a good scanner will do this in half an hour), then you can quickly get back to finishing the loo. It doesn’t look like a septic tank to me and could well be part of a tunnel entrance and old cellars. If you want some fun and beautiful literature on brick buildings, I recommend James Campbell’s ‘Brick: a world history’ (Thames and Hudson, 2003). Have fun discovering more of your building’s history!

hi stephanie & lalandians :) - i have a video idea, actually three: 1) in several videos in the past you have talked about the huge renovation projects that happened before you started vlogging, you have replumped and rewired the whole chateau, completely transformed the grand salon including a new floor, you have installed a dozen new bathrooms, a new heating system, a new kitchen, redone all the bedrooms, reroofed the chapel etc. i would find it highly interesting to hear about those projects in more detail and maybe you could dig up a few old photos like you did in the video about the grand salon? (and yes, i admit that it were those abominable, angry, bored people at this abominable site who gave me that idea but i suggest such a video not bc of them but bc it would be so interesting!) 2) i would sell my grandmother (no i wouldn't) for the chance to rummage through your attics and see what treasures are buried there and since that isn't going to happen (but i totally would, can i come??) you could do aan attic- clear out video? that would be so much fun to watch! you'll probably find new restauration projects, stuff to give away and mybe some hidden gems?! 3) yes, you have done your fair share of chateau-tours and i watched each one at least three times, but maybe you could do a complete walkthrough at some point? so that we get a better picture of the floorplans and where's what? you could combine such a walkthrough with a "lalande in numbers" - like count all the windows, rooms, doors, i think that would be great fun :) thank you for the videos you make, i know how much work the editing and filming must be! thank you to everyone who supports stephanie's work via patreon. due to covid and therefore having no job at the moment, i'm unfortunately unable to do the same but i know you understand. bc this is another thing i appreciate a lot: stephanie gets a lot of support from her fans but NEVER has she begged or even asked for anything and at no point did i ever feel pressured to do or give anything, people do it because they can and because they want to. keep up the great work and always be that shining example of how to live a life joyfully :)
Sandra Westley if you go back through a lot of the videos that Stephanie started off with, there are a lot of videos that cover what you want to see, I think your going to have to go back probably 3 yrs, I have seen them myself so I know they exist.
There is a playlist called Grand Tour of Lalande which Stephanie did during the first lockdown. Also the early vlogs under the Sundays at the Chateau playlist have vlogs talking about the renovation of the kitchen, the grand salon, etc including some before photos. I agree with you about being allowed to rummage in the attics 🤣😂🤣😂
Thank you all for another very unusual vlog, I never know what to expect you all to be doing. Marie making every one happy with food, as she does, that’s normal. Enjoyed it immensely. WCL
Selmar was so excited to find that underground space, he was like a kid in a candy store. It was so fun to watch!😍🥀🥀🥀Maybe there is a time capsule hidden down there, wouldn't that be awesome??!!
It could be a cistern for water. We live in an old Victorian and we have 3 brick cisterns that are underground. Ours as well have vaulted ceilings......
Omg! Stephanie you must watch The Dig on Netflix! I think you’ll love it!!! Just watched last night, so when Selmar discovered the secret tunnel the movie came to mind!!!
I am wondering if the tunnel is part of the original basement converted into a septic system. I remember Stephanie mentioned in a vlog about the bats in the basement of the chateau under the grand salon, how small it was for such a large chateau. She had wondered if it was walled off somewhere or the entrance hidden. It will be exciting to see once they can access that area. Maybe they should contact the Marquis family and ask if they know what it is. Cant wait to see!
What a lovely couple who took the peacocks! I hope she gets her unicorn one day. I am so intrigued by Selmar's find of the pipes to the underground hole/tunnel/cavern. I am very interested to find out what it was for and when it may have been constructed. This is the fun part of a chateau. So many changes happen over time and you never know what you might discover. Much love to you all.
It would be cool if you could find the wall on the inside of the bldg where it might have been walled up and open it for storage or a wine cellar etc.....
Wow, how exciting!!! Lots going on at LaLande and new things to explore!! I love how Stephanie and the others call the Christmas ornaments “baubles”. I’ve never heard that word used like that in the States and it’s adorable!! Can’t wait to see what’s under the bathroom!! Love you all 💗
Another great episode of the Chateau Diaries, it’s very good to hear that the peacocks are in a safe location, the Chateau giving up more secrets and you are getting some Lavender chickens 🐔 That is awesome! Wishing everyone at the chateau all the best!
I am glad that you have the storage room you have for all the Christmas decor! I wish I had more storage. The tree looks so beautiful still, with just the lights on it. I just have to say it is comical to me how you all like McDonald's hamburgers so much. Of course your homemade ones are much better!! They looked yummy!
It’s a Wonderful find under the new future bathroom, Selmar is so excited and Philip being chosen to go down into this tunnel was so funny...cannot wait!!
I hope you find treasures down in the tunnel. That would be wonderful. Philip is "Lalande" for you Stephanie. What a great friend. Selmar finds the most interesting things in your Chateau. What fun. Can't wait to see what's there. Take care and God bless you all.
This feels like a cliff hanger to me, can’t wait to discover what kind of room it is. My guess? It was cold storage; wine cellar, cheeses, maybe dried meats hung from the root cellar roof, vegetables harvested from the garden, preserves made and kept cool and (hopefully) dry. It’s close to the kitchen. Before refrigeration was a thing, that is probably how they would store food harvested from the garden... maybe the entrance is on the garden side?? I imagine when that part of earlier structure was burnt down, in the rebuilding they might have closed it off because by then refrigerators were a thing... But this is all just idle speculation! Secretly hoping there is treasure buried for emergency purposes by some former noble owner. In any case -what fun!! Indiana Jansen (sp) 🤣🤣🤣will discover it!
@@germaineholmes2247 I hope Stephanie edits in some dramatic archaeologist- adventure-explorer music. Hoping they find something more interesting than what was discovered during The opening of Al Capone’s vault with Geraldo Rivera!
I could not love this show more!!! I felt sad but also happy for the peacocks, intrigued with the mystery of the space under the loo, delighted with the camaraderie of all of you, annoyed that anyone would dare give this a thumbs down, and excited to see what happens next!! xoxo

hi stephanie & lalandians :) - i have a video idea, actually three:
1) in several videos in the past you have talked about the huge renovation projects that happened before you started vlogging, you have replumped and rewired the whole chateau, completely transformed the grand salon including a new floor, you have installed a dozen new bathrooms, a new heating system, a new kitchen, redone all the bedrooms, reroofed the chapel etc. i would find it highly interesting to hear about those projects in more detail and maybe you could dig up a few old photos like you did in the video about the grand salon? (and yes, i admit that it were those abominable, angry, bored people at this abominable site who gave me that idea but i suggest such a video not bc of them but bc it would be so interesting!)
2) i would sell my grandmother (no i wouldn't) for the chance to rummage through your attics and see what treasures are buried there and since that isn't going to happen (but i totally would, can i come??) you could do aan attic- clear out video? that would be so much fun to watch! you'll probably find new restauration projects, stuff to give away and mybe some hidden gems?!
3) yes, you have done your fair share of chateau-tours and i watched each one at least three times, but maybe you could do a complete walkthrough at some point? so that we get a better picture of the floorplans and where's what? you could combine such a walkthrough with a "lalande in numbers" - like count all the windows, rooms, doors, i think that would be great fun :)
thank you for the videos you make, i know how much work the editing and filming must be! thank you to everyone who supports stephanie's work via patreon. due to covid and therefore having no job at the moment, i'm unfortunately unable to do the same but i know you understand. bc this is another thing i appreciate a lot: stephanie gets a lot of support from her fans but NEVER has she begged or even asked for anything and at no point did i ever feel pressured to do or give anything, people do it because they can and because they want to. keep up the great work and always be that shining example of how to live a life joyfully :)
#3 - yes like Michael did a tour with his cameraman of Billy & Gwen's chateau. That was very helpful in understanding the floorplan.
"Dan, Of Course I want a lavender chicken"!!!
Thank you all for another very unusual vlog, I never know what to expect you all to be doing. Marie making every one happy with food, as she does, that’s normal. Enjoyed it immensely. WCL
Stephanie how about making 'mystery and secrets' series as well if there are any for in la land history 😍😍😍
Yes!!!!👍
Selmar was so excited to find that underground space, he was like a kid in a candy store. It was so fun to watch!😍🥀🥀🥀Maybe there is a time capsule hidden down there, wouldn't that be awesome??!!
It could be a cistern for water. We live in an old Victorian and we have 3 brick cisterns that are underground. Ours as well have vaulted ceilings......
So happy to see Ian’s get their new home❤️
Wow wow !!!! you are teasing us , can not wait !!!
😪😪😪😪so sad to see peacocks leaving even though it was necessary 😢 xxxxxx wishing them happy times in their new home xx
This all atmosphere gives me Gilmore girls vibe, heartwarming and just nice people together. Love it !
Omg! Stephanie you must watch The Dig on Netflix! I think you’ll love it!!! Just watched last night, so when Selmar discovered the secret tunnel the movie came to mind!!!
@ Jeannine F Stephanie and Cat were talking in the last vlog live chat about having watched it and enjoying so much😊
💛 Always putting a smile on my face. Just love these vlogs and all you beautiful souls. Thanks Stephanie. Blessings Mandy 👑SA
The mysteries of the chateau are so fun - I can't wait to see what else you find.
That was a "Supper Good" episode!
Dan is the cutest.
Selmar is a SKEPTIC about the SKeptic tank 😂😂😂
Lol the "sceptic tank" love it Selma 🥰
Purple, copper and orange can look quite nice for Christmas.
Stephane you keep on talking about Christmas next year. However Christmas is at the end of this year 😀
Just 10 months....can't wait!!!!
HnM,I think, someone sent the trousers. The William Morris design.
So much fun and hard work!!! It makes the world go round.!!!
Thank you for sharing😊😊😊
Enjoyed the whole video from beginning to end!!!
Looking forward
So excited, could this be the missing cellar?
What a lovely couple who took the peacocks! I hope she gets her unicorn one day. I am so intrigued by Selmar's find of the pipes to the underground hole/tunnel/cavern. I am very interested to find out what it was for and when it may have been constructed. This is the fun part of a chateau. So many changes happen over time and you never know what you might discover. Much love to you all.
It would be cool if you could find the wall on the inside of the bldg where it might have been walled up and open it for storage or a wine cellar etc.....
Marie IS a marvel. And I will henceforth think of Philip as Indiana Johnson!
Love you all 💗
Another great episode of the Chateau Diaries, it’s very good to hear that the peacocks are in a safe location, the Chateau giving up more secrets and you are getting some Lavender chickens 🐔
That is awesome!
La Lande is always interesting but under ground tunnels are extremely exciting!
Hi from Sydney Australia xxxx
I too can't wait to see the next existing episode of Indiana Jennsen.
@@germaineholmes2247 I hope Stephanie edits in some dramatic archaeologist- adventure-explorer music. Hoping they find something more interesting than what was discovered during The opening of Al Capone’s vault with Geraldo Rivera!
Amazing! Selmar found out the famous hidden tunnel! I can't wait To learn more about his discovery! So exciting ! Bisous from Alsace!😘🤗😀😁
Oh I can't wait to get home from work and watch!
Lavender pekin hens are beautiful.! It was great to get outside into the grounds today and see the gravel finished and the progress of the bathroom.
You both look amazing in the thumbnail ❤️
So pleased to see more of the restoration taking place ! Fascinating find
I could not love this show more!!! I felt sad but also happy for the peacocks, intrigued with the mystery of the space under the loo, delighted with the camaraderie of all of you, annoyed that anyone would dare give this a thumbs down, and excited to see what happens next!! xoxo
“skeptic tank” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
