I’ve been waiting a lifetime for this but didn’t know it until I saw this tutorial. I would love dozens of these-so much appreciated, so very helpful, thank you.
product designer maker Oh yes I know exactly how I found it! I search for “observational drawing” very often, I’m obsessed with observation in general (it’s basically like a spiritual virtue). To find new content I vary the wording slightly and this time found your stellar video.
Your lessons are objective and easy to understand. The material you provide is as good as paid drawing classes. Thanks for making this available for everyone, you’re inspiring a lot of people for sure. Good luck with your channel!
so beautifully explained. I have never come across such video where someone even explains what to see and observe..the space between things and the angle. Thank you
Your videos are really helpful. This is the second time that I’m watching this one and trying to get information to help me draw from still life, like peppers, tomatoes apples pots mug, etc. would really love to see you create a tutorial on drawing the objects I mentioned above. I’m sure a lot of art students out there would love it, like me.I’m learning with an online course but feel the drawing sessions are not sufficient. Thank you
Really glad to be of help. Yes, the still life items would be an interesting basis for A couple of videos. Realistically, it’s unlikely that I’ll get to producing anything of this type quickly (lots of other product design videos on the way). Always a good idea to start with proportion when dealing with still life (in my opinion). Is the object taller than it is wide? Is it deeper than it is tall? Etc. where is its widest point, with reference to its height? How sharp is the curve? Does the curve continue uniformly, or begin to get tighter? These are all questions that I would ask myself as I am laying out my shape with light pencil or pen marks. Hope this helps for now.
@@productdesignermaker I understand! Still looking forward to seeing drawings still life tutorials from you. Thank you so much for your enlightening questions. They help a lot!!
Thank you for all the fantastic videos you put out. They have helped immensely. I would like to know if there is a way to work as a freelance product designer? If one doesn't have prior experience in product design at an org, is there a way to create a portfolio and land up freelance gigs? I am more of a Graphic designer but would like to make the transition. Thank you.
Thank you, appreciated. There are always ways and means. If you’re applying for jobs, you’ll always be up against graduates with impressive portfolios. Depending on your preferred niche, it may be possible to approach businesses that may not even be employing, and to open a dialogue. If you’re able to build a portfolio that champions your skills, and piques the interest of A potential employer, then you may have an in. Becoming freelance will rely heavily on a good portfolio and a back catalogue of work. If you’re in a position to get some work experience (paid or otherwise), that will help.
im an arts student, can you recommand a list of booksfor industrail design? sketching, design thinking etc.im currently studying two books named How to Draw and How to Render by Scott Robertson. always want to learn more technical drawing, but still i have no idea how to think about Design, it would be very helpful for the field of concept art i presume. Advices and other resources are very much appreciated.
In observational design sketching, don't you start out first converting a real object into orthographic views. Then, draw a perspective sketch of that real object ?
Cory, there are multiple ways and methods to do this. As in all of my videos, I’m simply passing on techniques and ideas that I’ve developed or learned over years of doing this for real. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, for example, the method you suggest might not work too well if you can’t access three faces (ie you can’t see side elevation, end elevation and plan view). My video is carefully made to encourage my students (and anyone else interested), to ‘look and see’, not look and assume. It is also to show how to visually measure and relate. Just for your info, here’s a video I made that shows another method of doing a similar thing.... and it’s close to the method you’re suggesting, I think.... th-cam.com/video/JkpDCUk17K4/w-d-xo.html
