    Ingredients:
    -1 cup of white/sticky rice
    -4 cups of water
    -Pomelo/Grapefruit peel (One full fruit)
    Preparation:
-Rinse the rice to clean it of dirt, dust, etc. This step is optional, but recommended.
-Wash the rice. This is different from rinsing. Put the rice in a bowl of water and rub/scrub it between your hands like your are washing your hands thoroughly. (Don’t add soap or anything like that.)
-Discard the rice (or keep it and cook it if you like. I know that some people did that, so it should be okay), but keep the remaining water.
-Boil the water w/ pomelo peels (Pomelo isn’t common in the some places, so grapefruit is the next best thing. If that isn’t available, you can try orange peels or another acidic fruit’s peel, although she doesn’t say so in the video, I imagine it would be okay) and a few drops of herbal oil/essential oil (She used Lavender). Use all of the peel from the whole fruit.
    Boil for about 10-15 minutes.
Once boiled, store it in a jar with the lid closed for at least 1 week. A closet would be a good place to keep it for the time being.
    Application:
-Flip your head upside down over a bucket and rinse the water through your hair (Refer to 9:13 because I don’t think I explained as well as a visual could). Give your scalp a nice massage while rinsing for best results.
-Leave it in for 20-30 minutes. The more sensitive your hair to protein, the shorter you should leave it in for.
-Rinse everything out of your hair with clean water, your head upside down like before. (Again, refer to 10:12)
-Pat/Blot your hair clean with a soft towel.
The Yao women say they do this every 2-3 days, but because your hair is not going to be used to this method, doing this every 2-3 days may damage it. Use this method sparingly, maybe once or twice a month.
Feel free to screenshot if you need to :D

soooo I use black rice...but this is kinda how I do it. I pour boiling water over rinsed rice and let it sit until cool...then I add sweet orange oil or a citrus peel....let it sit out 3-5 days...then put in the fridge. I have VERY high porosity hair so I do use it once a month....has done WONDERS for my hair. I also spray on my scalp with tea tree oil when I have braids and it really helps to keep my scalp clean.

I am a cosmetologist, hair grows from the scalp! If this is going to work, it's because you place it on your scalp! The oil in the citrus will close the hair cuticles so that it lays flat. This will elongate the hair shaft making it appear longer. The average hair grows 1/2 inch per month. Should you see more growth than that, then what you are doing is working. I hope this helps. P.S. It doesn't matter what type of hair you have, any extra attention you five to your hair (extra brushing) will increase its growth.

My hair is nearly knee-length and very thick. I keep cutting it...2 winters ago I cut off almost 2 feet...but now I'm just letting it grow. My favorite trick for hair growth is the inversion method which gets blood to the scalp, plus it feels good to hang from the waist and releases tension. In about a year, it'll be down to my knees as it grows 3/4 inch each month.

Jen_Jen B 🤣 you can brush and shampoo any hair everyday. I am writing this as an African American Cosmetologist. They do not teach white or black hair in Cosmetology school. However, hair theory is taught based on HAIR not ethnicities, racial makeup, prejudice or racial bias or blah, blah. There is no such thing as African American hair. Yet, there is curly and overly curly hair textures which is not race specific even if it is more commonly recognized with AA’s. So, she did not write or imply anything wrong. The process they make their hair rinse is long and complicated as they also steam the He Shou Wu with black beans and sesame skin to ripen the herb and allow it to have its therapeutic effects. They then soak the He Shou Wu with the rice water. He shou Wu is a Chinese herb known to prevent gray hairs and hair loss. They boil the rice water to bring the nutrients of the herb as Chinese medicine u boil stuff to get therapeutic effects.

@Vixen Kitsune it is in Chinese. So there is no English subtitle. I was watching a popular Chinese show and they had the Yao ladies explaining a bit more about how they make their own shampoo. So the ladies will climb up in the mountain to find the herb He Shou Wu. They call it Pang Shou Wu, to name it after the surname of their tribe but if u go to a Chinese medicine shop, the herbalists call it He Shou Wu. U can google it. He Shou Wu is known as a Chinese herb to help with hair growth, prevents graying and hair loss. But it is expensive. To get the maximum effect, u steam it with Black Beans and Black Seaseme. They also use mulberry roots. But u can use mulberry leaves as the infamous Empress Dowger Cixi shampoo was mulberry leaves boiled and then strained to make a rinse. Mulberry also has benefits for the hair. They use dry pomelo skin not raw skin. U see in Chinese culture, we dry the citrus fruits skin to make soups as it is meant to be healthy. So if u eat a pomelo, just keep the skin and dry it. Rice water acts more of a conditioner. Tea seed cake is what cleans the hair. So I have no idea how to get this in the West. U might need to get from a Chinese herbal shop. Ginger is meant to stimulate hair growth. So the videos u go are limited coz of language barriers.

@Vixen Kitsune If u want the link this is the video of a popular Chinese tv show. U will need a Chinese friend to translate for u. This video is the video the Yao Ladies explaining more of their secret than any other videos I have seen. So many of the DIY videos out there are not doing it properly in terms of trying to replicate the Yao ladies formula. The whole point of boiling the Chinese herbs and rice water is to bring out the therapeutic effect of Chinese herb especially He Shou Wu and Mulberry roots. th-cam.com/video/OTcfvyYYQgE/w-d-xo.html

Thank you so much for this video, as I had been watching many different ones and found this one to be the best.
I leave it on my hair, wrapped in a plastic bag then towel for about 2 hours, then I wash and condition my hair like usual. I finish with an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse: 1/4 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with 2 Cups Distilled water + some grapefruit essential oil drops. Do not rinse out the Apple Cider Vinegar! Just ring hair out and dry naturally...the Vinegar smell will go away when hair is dry.

An Asian man interviewed the elderly family and the yao lady showed and explained the process. She showed first wash the rice 3 times and the last wash leave in tight container for a week to ferment and at the same time store your pomelo peels(grapefruit or what ever acidic peels you have)also. After a week it should smell sour. Then she boiled the sour smelling water and added the peels. She also told him this part I'm about to say is very important. She goes up the hill and gather the tea tree seeds that makes tea tree seed oil for the regular people to cook with , but the ladies who grow their hair take the use tea residue which turns chalky and crumble in the water. She said that's a very important step then the ladies on the video went to the back porch and soaked whole head with the water. The video was under calberklay you tube channel and was 3:07 mins. My point is when you did your research did you also find that part about the tea tree seeds.

I've tried it! When i was applying it on my hair... You know how when you pour water on your hair and it gets tangled sometimes and it aint easy to brush the first time. When I poured the rice water onto my hair and rub it in, it made my hair silky smooth, it was so easy to brush with my fingers. It may feel a bit weird after you rinse it out but the next few days it made my hair feel super soft and smooth. It was fun to touch.
Oh! It doesn't stink. It has a very citrusy aroma, like an orange when you open it...even after a few weeks. I tried mine on the third week.
Some tips I got from another video plus tweaked it up a bit... I rinsed the rice a few times with tap water i think i rinsed mine 3-5 times before draining and adding 4 cups of purified water then washing and rubbing the rice between my hands. That water was directly poured into a pot and I used a strainer to separate the grains of rice, then set it aside for someone to cook... I actually don't remember what happened to the rice after hahaha.
Once in a pot, I put the grapefruit peels and waited for it to boil then set the timer to 7 mins. Then I waited for it to cool down for another 10 mins before pouring it into a jar. You might think it's not enough because some of the water may have evaporated but it was enough for my medium length hair.
Hope this was helpful 😁 I know the video was 😍🥰❤

I actually tried it last week and it made my natural 4c hair so soft and moisturized. I put organic white rice into a spray bottle then added a lot of water to maybe 2 tablespoons of rice. I left the mixture in the spray bottle for 1 or two days. I shook the ingredients very often as I waited for it to "ferment". I have never fermented anything, so I had no clue what I was doing. Whatever I did, worked wonderfully, so much so, I can't wait to do it again. However, I will wait and do it next month as to prevent protein overload... I enjoyed your video. I found your info to be very clear, concise, and informative.

This is a great video. I can say as a Rice water user for months on my relaxed hair, my hair wonderful results. I do just like other videos do. I wash my rice, add with water and an orange peel to the jar and I seal the jar. Sometimes I use in 24 hours but most times I forget and leave it as long as a week. The fermentation totally happens and you can tell by the bubbles that happen you can see it fizzing in the Mason jar. I imagine that it doesn't really matter if you do it the "proper" way or the popular ways. My hair is softer, longer, less shedding, its even shinier. Because my hair is relaxed i can use this once a week but I usually moisture condition during or after.

I've been using the 24 hour method (and currently have a jar on the counter I'm experimenting with for a longer ferment) for a while, but I also add white distilled vinegar up to about 25% of the total mixture and I use this as an after shampoo rinse, leaving for a minute or two while I'm washing everywhere else in the shower, then I rinse it out. The vinegar is good to restore the acid mantle and is fantastic for preventing split ends. I also add a little food-grade rose water for a nice smell, just a splash in a quart jar. I've been working training my scalp to produce less oil by extending the time between washes, only recently switching to 1x per week. This has helped me get past a hair plateau. At this point, I'm at tailbone length and I was stuck at waist-length for years with the need to trim a lot due to split ends. Just putting all that out there in case it might be helpful to someone else. Also, the ratio of vinegar to rice water might need to be adjusted depending on hair texture and fullness. Mine is on the fine side, straight, and too much vinegar makes it feel greasy.
I might have to try it differently based on this video. I look forward to experimenting.

I've currently got hair just past my elbows which is black and layered on the sides...(think of Amy Lee from Eveanescence, and you'll see the same).
I'm trying to get the tip of it to my tailbone. I hope the rice water method will work. Because I've tried everything else including daily doses of Biotin and several vitamins.
Thinking of adding a few drops of rosemary oil to it too.

If too much rice is used, it WILL BREAK your HAIR. We use the rice water straight from the cooking pot to wash our faces which are clear and blemish free. I massaged it in with some oils added. This time i am including peppermint and my blended oils (with them hot) massaged in after the rice water is put in. Tomorrow is my day #1 of the my bi-weekly rice water challenge until my b day in august. I trimmed my hair a little yesteday and sealed in moisture so i am ready. I am doing a hot oil treatment today. I am pampering my hair daily for now on. 😊

And a seed oil is the fats from a seed (like an egg yolk from an egg) so i would say the essential oil is closer to adding alcohol than fat. You CAN get tea seed oil here! Its called camelia oil! Thats what ill add to mine 😊

Maby people do not understand what's fermentation is. If the water was boiled then everything would that water contain like vitamins minerals and such are already dead. Nothing in that water can go through fermentation process now. Another thing that everybody advices which I think is wrong is to close tightly the container with water and wait for it to ferment. If the container is tightly closed the fermentation process is not going to happen. In order for water to go through the fermentation process it needs access to air, the best thing to do is to cover the container with cheesecloth to prevent debris falling in and wait for 3 to 5 days, deoending on a room temperature, for fermintation proces to happen in a dark space.

I’ve been using rice water on my hair for about 4 months now. I wash my hair about every 6 days. I do everything in this video pretty much except I don’t boil the rice and I only have lavender oil in it to mask the smell more than anything.
It’s usually left to ferment for about 2 days and then I pour it into my spray bottle and it just lives there for however long until I’ve used it up. It usually lasts about 2 months so about 8 washes for me.
The thing is though once I’ve sprayed it all in my hair I then put my conditioner in over it. Deep or normal. Then that sits there for half an hour with a shower cap over it and I rinse it out. I do that because then the protein from the water is balanced out with the moisture from the conditioner. It’s worked well for me. My boyfriend says my hair is really soft all the time so works a treat lol. The reason I started it is to help with hair growth for medical reasons and I’m not sure if it’s working for that although my hair is longer than before but not sure if that’s just natural growth lol but I stick with it now because it’s keeping my hair in good condition.

Gazi Islam I use it once a week since I wash my hair once a week. It may be causing frizz in your hair because your hair already has too much protein. Try using a deep conditioners over it and limit your use to once a week if you’re using it twice. In my opinion an hour is more than enough. 30 minutes left in your hair will do.

So I follow this exact recipe and I changed two things about the recipe. The first thing I changed was I add a grapefruits and oranges secondly I added ferugreek. I like that basically simmer for about 20 to 25 minutes and then I put them in mason jars I waited till cool down and then make sure I put a tight lid on at the mason jars. I let one jar ferment for about a month and the second jar I let it ferment for actually a few months.
After fermenting the rice water, Also I’ll changed the way I use the treatment instead of washing My hair with the treatment, what I did was put it in droppers and at night before I go to bed or when I get up in the morning I will put a few droplets on my scalp and massage in. And because of quarantine my hair is usually in a protective style, so it made it so much easier because basically I didn’t touch my hair for about 3 to 4 months and the only time i did do it is when it needs a good wash. The treatment had a bit of a citrusy kind of sour smell it smell good though, while I was doing the treatment my hair had little to no smell and which I’m happy about.
Well that all being said my hair does need the protein because it lacks it, so what I do after I guess the 3-4 months of build up from the treatment and the fact that my hair needs to be washed what I do is I take down my cornrows what I find helps with the build up and a bit of the tangling is oil and water in a spray bottle and a big tooth comb and I just saturate my hair in the water and I just comb out the knots in it does it perfectly every time not a lot of pain it’s easy and I don’t have an issue.
Since doing the treatment, I just said it to have hair hair length goals. So when I started back in the summer of 2020, my hair struggled to get to the middle of my back. It would break
And was very uneven, so after I gave it a trim and put it in cornrows since doing the treatment from last summer to about winter.. my hair is now officially passed the middle of my back and it continues to grow I just washed it the other day and it’s going really well I gave myself another trim just to get rid of the ends and a start of the process again.
And if you guys don’t know my hair is about a 4B/4c type.

Thank you so much for this information! I have 4c hair and have a lot of trouble with the thickness and length of my hair. I’ve kind of given up. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind me asking.
Would you say boiling the water is crucial to the process?
Have you tried the method where you just leave the rice and water in a mason jar to ferment overnight instead of boiling? That’s what I see ppl do most often.
How did you know that your hair lacks protein?
So you don’t rinse your hair with this, you basically just use it a leave-in?
For storage, do you leave it in the fridge?

      @@nkirukaukaegbu5080 you’re welcome,
      1. I don’t think it’s crucial, but I did want to follow the recipe.
      2. I have tried the method without boiling and I didn’t really have an issue with it but that being said the smell wasn’t pleasant also I felt the overnight method was more for girls wash their hair every day or every other day which I don’t do. Depending on my protective style, which is usually wigs I don’t wash my hair.
      3. I do a trick with glass of water and a strand of my hair. It’s to test your hairs porosity, so if your hair stays at the top it means you have low porosity, if your hair flows in the middle it means you’re pretty much normal but if it floats to the bottom it means it’s high porosity.
      4. Correct, So when I get up in the morning or before I go to bed, I usually have a spray bottle or dropper of the rice water and just apply it to my scalp in my hair and just rub it in. I’ve even gone as far as to make a conditioner out of my rice water because that’s what I generally use if I feel like my hair needs a little cleanse before my wash day or wash month essentially.
      5. my mixture is always on nightstand so I remember to make sure and put it in my hair every night or every other night or on my dresser. In A concealed container but if I have a mixture that needs to ferment, I leave it in a mason jar that’s completely sealed and let it sit. The longest I’ve left my rice water to ferment was about five months.
