Fact is, popular music is about POPULARITY, and if a performer looks like a star, and people are attracted to and interested in them, they move to the front of the line. This is show business and star power is currency. Here is the other thing to remember: talent is not rare, star-level charisma IS rare.

People turning Adela's rather valid criticisms and frustrations against an individual receiving preferential treatment to a race thing, calling her "anti black girl", is so beyond wild to me.
I also think it’s a valid point. Almost everyone in the contest thought Manon got the votes mostly because of her looks. She got almost no vote for people they want to debut with. Bluntly speaking she is talented but there are others who are more talented but don’t get picked. In the eyes of the other girls who worked harder, it just means that it doesn’t matter how hard they tried, in the end luck (in this case her beauty) determines more.
Visual is very important indeed. People said they prioritize talent and such but more often than not, the most popular member in K-pop are the visuals. So in business point of view I see why they include Manon. And it was proven that she is the most popular girl in the group even though repeatedly stated as the less skilled in the group until this day.

This only reminds me of the group assignments you have to do in school, there almost always is someone that doesn't put in as much effort as the others and it can be really frustrating. It's only not that people are seeing it play out on a show with a highly competitive environment where losing doesn't just give you a bad score, but actually can change the directory of your life. As fans let's not forget that many other groups, boy or girl groups have spoken in the past about their trainee days and sometimes not getting along with a member that they now work along side with.
Only on the surface though. Manon had Covid and this competition happened back when Covid was still a really strong virus. She didn't just miss class, she was seriously ill. The way it was reported you'd think she had the common cold or something.
Minho and Key Shinee are famous for this 😂 But as they grow older, they learn to appreciate each other and actually become a close friend who bickered a lot 🤣 Always bickering but often hang out together.
I think when they are younger SNSD also wasn’t as tight as nowadays. They mentioned their argument and when they got hurt by the other members. But they have stayed and worked together for 17 years now. They seem more relaxed and genuinely comfortable with each other.
That doesn't work as an analogy since some of the ones who put in a lot of effort didnt score well enough regardless of Manon. First group Manon was in was terrible and it wasnt her fault. 2nd group she was in got lots of votes but that was mostly because of Daniella. Like no matter what, her amount of effort and presence doesnt matter if the others just arent getting any votes regardless.
It definitely is similar but then again if it was my friend not putting in the work I would still get annoyed but not suddenly hate them or whatever like people are making this situation out to be 😭 Like you just correct/help them, move on and hope they don’t do it again which is what looks like happened here albeit probably slower.
At this point i just believe that Manon has always been favoured, and that the group was built around her.
(Edit) I'm not gonna talk as if my bias Gehlee from Unis was skillful enough, when i first saw her, to be in the group , bc she was also like Manon during Universe Ticket, like less experienced in dancing and singing, the only diff between them is that Gehlee took it seriously, worked hard in all of the songs they're tasked to perform, never skipped class and the judges and other trainees saw her improvement. Why am i comparing them? Bc wether a trainee works hard or not, if the company likes her then she's in, as unfair as it sounds it is what it is. the comp already knows what they're doing.

1. I think with Naisha, she did post the original song and WAS following someone outside of the program and they knew before they told the girls and she went back to delete said people to save her self but too late because again they already knew. OR they pushed her out to FULLY secure Manons spot because they knew one black girl would make it and Manon compared to Naisha in dance was not strong which could have been the make or break for Manon.
2. Adela was valid at first but you can feel the jealousy oozing off of her. Which I mean I would be too, and jealous people do hurtful things. Not saying it’s right but it will take her time to fully get over it and ANYONE ELSE would be just as mad as she was. And at the end of the day Manon made it and she didn’t. So I don’t understand why you would all focus so much attention on someone who was voted first out.
3. Lara did NOT just smirk/giggle at Manon for no reason when she returned to practice. Manon said hi to everyone in the room besides Lara, didn’t even look at her. Anyone in that position would have felt just as awkward, some would have made a face, some would have ignored it, some would have called her out about it. But to say she just laughed at her as she walked by is extremely false.

I completely understand Adela's frustration and she's very young too this is a given reaction(Not okay of course but it's to be expected really) As a European myself I feel bad for Manon though, in my head someone can and probably should skip work if they're feeling unwell she just didn't understand that's not something you can just do in Kpop training..
Edit: I think I worded this in the wrong way, you don't just "skip" work/school whenever you want where I'm from of course not but if you have a good reason to miss work/school like a high fever, covid like Manon had, you were in an accident etc. it is possible for you to call in sick for a day or maybe a couple of days depending on the severity of your situation

To be real i don't think any other of the other girls would be bothered if it was them getting "special treatment" because they are beautiful. It is also important to consider that though they are an international girl group they were based of the kpop industry and in the kpop industry being beautiful is enough to make you debut. Whether thats fair or not that's the reality of the world they choose to enter.
The way Sophia handled it (like ending it on a good note) shows her maturity and great leadership skills
I did understand the girls pov in the documentary but I think they were forgetting that everyone has different cultural views. Manon told them that in her country they have more of a lax working environment. Nor did she have any experience whatsoever in the entertainment industry. I don't think she was maliciously missing practice. It was clear that she didn't understand the type of work ethic that is required for a kpop trainee group. She admitted she was wrong, apologized, and made efforts to change. But still holding a grudge against her when she clearly has made efforts to change and be better seems like they're bitter and petty. The fans voted her in the group not the judges. And Adela seems to be doing great as a soloist just like the judges said. If all the girls focused on taking advantage of this exposure they could still all succeed. If anything the company is the only one who deserves hate for this. They lied to the girls for 2 years and put them against each other just for entertainment.
The “They knew what they were getting into when they signed up for this show” comments are infuriating. Maybe they were naive for thinking this show wouldn’t deal with rigging/biased treatment… but wanting things to change when it comes to survival programs isn’t asking for much. It’s fcked up that some contestants can approach the competition half heartedly and debut while contestants giving their 110% when it shows get shafted.
This is why I don't bother looking into survival programs anymore. Too much bs and stupidity from both contestants and viewers. Plus, the evil editing that these shows make.

Don't get me wrong I understand how they feel... but the way some of those girls were talking about Manon was giving hater energy. i can't understand people saying the group was built around manon. she has little lines and is in the back for majority of the choreo in their performances. she lacked commitment in the beginning, but was mature, apologized, and worked extremely hard after the criticism. she deserved to be in the group, as did many others. at the end of the day, only 6 of 20 very talented girls could make it.
I know she will be in the group because of her popularity. This happened a lot in K-pop. And I think the team can already feel that she will bring them many cash because It’s apparent they give her a good part and highlight her beauty in many of the missions they give the teams.
And their debut songs, they also give her more screen time.
It’s not about getting the most choreography or singing parts. In K-pop, the center got to be the face of the group and the main singer sing the hardest part, meanwhile the main dancer might get a break dance part.
Even when Manon got less singing part it was because the team feels the other members can do that part better than her. But they give her the screen time which gives more chance to shine and being the talk of the town anyway.

Then when she came to the “dream academy” and skipped practices and didn’t put effort and made comments saying she knew she was going to be a star. Everything she does is mediocre besides her looks that’s why she’s hidden in the back for actual songs and performances. She even shares a set of solo lines and chorea with yoonchae in debut but hers is tweaked at the end because she can’t do the hand movement isolation.

after watching the documentary, they set up manon to be “the odd one out”. it wasn’t apparent until I noticed the beef on the show with manon. they literally had her training by herself from the beginning. then they tried to speed past the point of her being sick.
People mad about someone actually taking care of themselves but would say an idol is being overworked and mistreated if they're not allowed to spend time with their family or forced to practice lmao. Girls literally ended up with hip injuries. Good on Manon not pushing her body when it's not used to that level of work cause you can cause yourself lasting injuries and based on how she never missed a step for performances, she attended enough to memorize the routine and also took notes while she was there. Can't believe people are still bent out of shape over this 😂 Plus she's clearly good at performing now so there's no reason for people the be lamenting her presence all this time later.

to be honest we have no real reason to believe that any of the katseye members have issues right now. they all seem to have moved on, this stuff happened years ago. also this lineup was the best possible lineup to come out of dream academy. manon IS an essential member. and relax on lara and sophia, stakes were high and their friends were getting voted out. let it go.

You have no idea how big a deal it was to us as kpop fans from two such small countries. No one really knows our country and this was probably the first and last chance for us. It was absolutely clear that we could not compete with other participants from other countries in the voting. That's why Adel worked so hard and made so much effort to at least catch up with that. And when you work so hard it's hard to see that some don't put in as much effort as you and are on the higher rungs.
I wish KATSEYE the best of luck and keep my fingers crossed for them. Their debut was totally dazzling.

Seriously, they're fine. Sophia said that she could work with her as long as she showed up. Lara said the same and didn't want beef with anyone. In the end, Manon showed up. All is good. Conflict resolution. Adela never agreed with Manon making it farther than her. From her perspective, I can see why. But she's wrong. The judges felt she stood out too much as a soloist to be in a group. Commercial success as a girl group is more than talent. The Spice Girls weren't high in the talent but they had synergy as a group. And I don't think Adela is a "bad guy" for not congratulating Manon. I prefer she doesn't, if that's her true self and current beliefs. If her anger and frustration makes her resentful towards Manon, I hope it calms down soon and she finds peace. I hope Adela finds her music career. As with Daisha. She left such an insulting comment. But she wasn't a part of the conflict resolution discussion and she's still a child, and Adela might have polluted her thinking. She's portrayed as so sweet in the docuseries. Y'all remember how hyunjin and han did not get along during trainee days but got closer after debut. It's similar to that and not just them but many groups have internal beef before debut which eventually turns into the best friendship.

The show editing is weird though. They concentrated on all the girls that didn't make the final group. Apart from Manon, who they did edit as the "bad" one. Like the final 5 were girls just didn't get the same detailed treatment as others left behind.

I think it's interesting how ppl can "forgive" the other girls for out casting Manon (even with valid criticisms, she was outcast which emotionally can take a toll), still haven't forgiven Manon for not having the same worth ethic 3 years ago during training. They keep downplaying her growth as a dancer and singer and calling her just a visual which is a dig at her talent.
I personally understand why the girls were upset back then. But although they had valid points, you can't ignore how that might have skewed her treatment of her because of that which would also explain why Manon may not have wanted to be around them as much.
I wish they would touched on Manon's comment that she wasn't the only one missing a lot of practices. Instead they silenced her pretty much during the sit down convo.
I wonder how these girls who hated Manon feel about other "visual" members in kpop groups which is the system the group is based on. I feel like Adele had misplaced resentment towards Manon. Her critique on her efforts were valid, but she was NOT the reason she went from being at the top to being on the bottom. Even the producers said they didn't think she was a good fit and the fan votes confirmed their opinions. The girls loved her because of her personality and how she mothered them, not because she was the best fit for the group. She is better off as a solo.
They showed like 8 episodes… it was years in the making… we can only debate about what we’ve seen… only they know the entire story. Hopefully they thrive both as sisters and as a girl group. Also I really hope that the talented girls who didn’t make the 6 continue to thrive and improve their craft.

If Samara didn't had the controversy they would have had to debut her instead of Manon because she was more popular than Manon. But Manon was very popular too and the controversy gave the company the perfect excuse to take Manon instead of Samara. Besides, while both are black light skinned girls, Manon is european and Samara is latina. Historically and until today, we know europeans will always be favored in comparison to latinos. The show itself only had two latinas(Samara from Brazil and Celeste from Argentina)(sorry but while I love those two Daniela is american not cuban and venezuelan, and Lexie is swedish, not chilean) and a lot of europeans(Manon from Switzerland, Adela from Slovakia, Iliya from Belarus, Lexie from Sweden and even Naysha she was half brazilian, spoke portuguese fluent and had the stereotypical brazilian look and still was casted because just like Iliya she lived in Spain and was half european). So they probably thought "we already have a latina" (Daniela)(which she isn't), so they went for Manon because she had African ancestry(her dad is from Ghana). They are not really a global group. Spotify themselves classifies three of the girls being from the US, one from the Philippines, one from South Korea and one from Switzerland. The thing is that they chose girls who could superficially represent other nations other than the ones they were born and raised into. Sophia and Yoonchae are the only exceptions. I do think Lara represents India, but I don't think Daniela represents Cuba and Venezuela(I can say that being a latina myself). Idk about Megan representing Singapore/China and Manon representing Italy/Ghana tho.
I think some people need to remember that these girls are from more western cultures where having these fights isn't as big of a deal. people in a western group can literally hate each other but as long as they put out good music western fans are less likely to care or we see it as like, juicy gossip, not something someone can lose their job over like it is in Korea. hell even people who have done terrible things rarely going to lose their entertainment job a la Chris brown and woody Allen.
People will need to understand that there can be arguments between the group and thats okay

Honestly i’m proud of the girls
The group might have been built around Sofia and Manon but look at the difference between them. Sofia is a literal powerhouse, leader and team player. Despite coming from a wealthy family she proved herself. I couldn't stand Manon since the moment she said "It's less about talent and more about star quality" and the proceeded to say "I think I won't be going into practice today". This is obviously HYBE'S fault though. The other girls pushed themselves to the limit only to be replaced by someone who did the bare minimum. Manon will never improve enough to be on tier with the other girl's work ethic and skills because she never had to. The group will never reach it's potential because it has to work from Manon's skill base. The choreographies will always be simple. HYBE wasted it's own resources in training all those girls for nothing

Manon was talented. Likely was brought on on a different contract to the girls. Was probably told that she bade the cut and would be judged when it came to public judging. And they probably introduced her to the girls early to see their dynamic but were probably very casual with her as she knew she was getting through to at least the public judging. The girls that auditioned probably didn’t know the whole story with Manson. But I think making handled it well for someone walking into the situation blindly not knowing or understanding what this whole thing was. They singled Manon out because she was getting the most attention, period. And ima go there: people and society hold black and black-adjacent women to unreasonably high standards. Because if it’s true that others were missing rehearsals and they’re singling her out for it, then this is the perfect case of what I’m talking about. Additionally, they’re mad because she’s topping the ranks and she doesn’t have to work at hard as them to do that.
They’re lashing out because a difference of values too. While she comes from country with non-toxic work culture, some of them come from places where working yourself to death is admirable. I’m sure if the others were in the position she’s in, they’d still work just as hard but because Manon is not, they take it personally because they feel like it’s an attack on their values. That and they want to be in group so badly. There’s also an air of jealousy here too. They were teenagers after all.

While watching “dream academy, I had thoughts about who would make it into the group. I considered almost 5 out of 6 members in the final lineup, with Manon as my 7th member. All 6 members I chose are highly skilled in many areas. However, after watching “Pop Star Academy,” I realized Manon definitely fits the spot. Talent is essential, but each member brings a unique and popular personality. Manon has that “it” factor; her visuals are incredible. She was already popular due to her visuals and representation of the Black community, which people definitely support. That uniqueness and factor are needed to boost the group and achieve success. Although she is the least skilled, she has improved so much. I can’t imagine anyone else in the group; she fits so well. Even though there are more talented contestants on the show, the group is already filled with the most talented individuals. Uniqueness just needed that “it” factor, visual appeal, and popularity, which Manon definitely adds. Katseye is doing exceptionally well with top-tier vocalists, dancers, stage presence, visuals, and global representation. I’m so proud of you girls!

@@elesyeen they were definitely frustrated, because being young and competing in such a competition, and to see that someone is doing better, who doesn't show up as much to practice, is completely normal in such a situation, and we don't know most of what the girls went through, the whole process lasted 2 years, and all of that cannot fit into an 8-episode documentary
