    I operate using a brick with my radio via a 12V pd cable. I do have an in line fuse. The important factors when doing this is the quality of the brick and pd cable firstly, and secondly but equally important is the power delivery. You need to be certain that the pack can deliver enough amps @ 12V to deliver the power you need. I prefer a brick which tells you the output voltage i.e. 12V when the pd cable is attached. You also have to be certain that the pack will not quickly revert to default 5V if you haven't switched the TRX on and started drawing current. I use a brick that can give me 3A @12V to drive my DX-500 @10W o/p. There are not many affordable bricks out there that can do that. The talent cell can deliver 12.6 @ 3A which is fine. The other one can only deliver 18/20W and doesn't specify the voltage that can provide that. A pd cable can request 9,12,15,or 24V from a USB-C if the brick can offer those voltages, so even with a 12V pd cable you won't necessarily get anything if the brick can't deliver 12V or it may only be able to provide 1A@ 12V. The PD cable will have a maximum current it can deliver and you want to satisfy yourself that it can provide the current you require safely.

      Philip you provide several relevant and important factors to think through when using a lithium power brick with your radio. Thanks for sharing for all to consider.

    • @philipwells2793
      @philipwells2793 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HOAHamRadio It is a broad use case solution for QRP if you have carefully chosen the right brick. If the product doesn't explicitly say the USB-C o/p can provide 12V @ XA (X is the number of amps) where 12V x XA is sufficient power for your purpose don't buy it.
      Anything more than QRP you are probably better off with a LiFePO4 that can provide sufficient power for your needs.
      I am looking forward to when a company that produces a light weight LiFePO4 brick which can produce a 12/13.8V with high A, that can also be easily recharged, IP64, and provide USB A and/or C o/p without a silly high price. All the tech is out there it just needs putting together and packaged.

      @HOAHamRadio  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philipwells2793 I think the large companies making the bricks for 12v are pursuing markets which have nothing to do with amateur radio, we are too small for them to pay attention to. So we have to look at devices which require 12v, and find the manufactures who make batteries for them. And to your point, those devices must put out the amps we need. QRP only as you say. That's where I am in my early journey in this search.

    I use a Buddipole power mini 2 for my radios. It has overprotection circuitry, powerpole connections and is solar ready. I haven’t received my FX-4CR yet, but I believe the powermini 2 is about the same footprint. 72 de AI3W

    man, you got me thinking on the power delivery battery banks... I have a Zendure Supertank Pro... it'll do 12v/3a... too bad my G90 needs more like 5-8 amps (per google, haven't confirmed). I'm gonna have to play with it and see what it draws at 10w output. I see you linked a usb c cable that triggers the battery bank to deliver the 12v. I had no idea those existed. pretty cool.

    @HOAHamRadio > I have the 3amp Talent cell and it works well with the FX-4CR, more than enough for a good couple or three hours of SOTA/POTA
    Not a regulated supply but for $28 and the size I think is a great fit.
    I will likely end up using LiPo4 though, for safety mostly, however I do also have the PowerFilm LightsaverMAX which is outstanding but odd sized.

    Another great video. Very similar go bag to what I use, but mine is a full size backpack with the FX-4CR in the hard shell case it came with. I have that Talentcell brick also, but primarily use one of the14.8V Lipo 4S 5200mAh batteries traditionally used for R/C vehicles. Also, have a small rechargeable ATU in my backpack in case it's needed.

    I love Anker stuff, but Anker tends to leave out 12v from the PD spec - There are lots of ways to skin this cat, Bioenno is the best choice. I did a review on the VRURC battery as well - its a great battery for ham travel - it charges my laptop, phone and will power my radio "well enough". I have some more batteries coming out on the channel that should be better. - thanks for the video! My thoughts on the VRURC: th-cam.com/video/w6JpjkLouEI/w-d-xo.html

      It is not branded so I do not know the manufacturer; its what came with the radio originally. I've heard he upgraded to something different with new shipments of his FX-4CR.

  • @kylefreemason
    @kylefreemason ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the vrurc battery bank. Where can I find the xt-60 cable to power bank you used? Also, did that power bank allow the radio to operate at full 20w? Love your channel, thanks for the tips!

    • @HOAHamRadio
      @HOAHamRadio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is the cable I used to go from USB C to XT60. The VRUC ran the FX4CR at 20 watts, but will power down over time I suspect. I haven't run it for a long period of time to fully know when the watts will reduce.
