Here she is. The 2003 Honda CR250R. It’s a two stoke beauty. This is a project bike that Scott and I started last year in October 2017. We wanted to find an older dirt bike for less than $2500 USD and fix it up for the type of off road riding that we enjoy. Scott found this bike for about $1800 as our starting point. Both Scott and I are very busy men, so it’s taken longer than we hoped to start putting out content on this bike.
Over the winter, Scott set to work on this thing and we tried to keep the entire project under $4000. More on that later. This bike is going to be really cool once it’s done. I hope to have more content out on it in the next month or so.
Special thanks to my $10/month patrons on / dirtbikechannel

This is pretty cool. I’ve been riding a 250 4stroke and I want to give a 125 or 150 2stroke a try. There’s a sure fire mathematical formula to determine how many bikes anyone needs. It’s X+1 where X = the number of bikes you currently have

I don’t know why but Honda and it’s cr 250 has always been one of my absolute favorites. My dad had a 1998 cr250 about a year ago that he’s now sold but that bike just did what you asked it to and just went and was a beast. I also just love that original red graphics is just seems so nostalgic and vintage to me with that beautiful red color.

I just Completed this exact ride.
    Bought mine for $1900
After forkseals, 39mm kehien, pro taper, ims foot pegs-larger tank, new cables, rad valve 260mm galpher floating front ,reckomend 11% fly wheel-weight. This is the best $3000 bike I’ve ever had.
Oh I stuck a trailtech kick stand on just because I don’t want to have to go looking for a suitable tree while all the Katoom guys just stopped.
    I absolutely love mine.

I personally wouldn't even waste my time trying to get dents out of the stock pipe. For the type of trail riding I do and you do it would make a lot more sense to just throw a FMF Gnarly on there. I consider that a must have mod.

Can't wait to see more!! I've had my 2001 CR250 since 2005 and have slowly build it into a Rocky Mountain weapon. Take it to the top of the craziest mountains in Northern Britsh Columbia. Stock Mikuni carb even haha! Bark bashers, skid plate, Gnarly pipe, 52t rear sprocket and thats it.

Nice! I just got back from riding my '06 CR250. Great bikes. Did my project about 4 years ago. Motostuff oversize brake rotor and line, with '13 CRF master cylinder ... best front brake ever. '13 CRF footpegs, RB Designs head mod, Keihin carb. Mine's set up for mx. Looking forward to the next videos

I fully rebuilt my 06 yz125 with a big bore kit and many other mods a few months back and I’ve been having way more fun on it lately than my yz250x & KTM 525exc. I do desert racing and that’s the only time lately that my race bikes out shine my 125 but if I’m at Milestone I’m on the 125 cause it doesnt have a big ass 3.2 gallon tank on it so I can actually ride the tracks and do 10 minute motos and enjoy it. Rebuilding my yz125 was the best thing I did cause now I enjoy riding when I’m not out racing in the desert but don’t get me wrong my yz250x is hands down one of the best bikes I’ve raced out in the desert through the sand washes, hills and rocks. Yamaha did a great job designing that bike.

My best friend rides an 04 CR. He has had it for about 5 or 6 years now. Hasn't done anything to it other than upgrades, maintenance, and top ends, with the exception of a bottom end rebuild this year. Sweet bikes. Age is just a number on this one. I have an 04 yz450f that I have had about as long and we have ridden all over Nevada and Northern CA with them at least once a week for the last several years, up until my ACL surgery. Hope all is well Kyle, and I will be following this series closely.

So keen for this build and its reasonable budget. Get so sick of the offroad mags " refreshing" old bikes to show you how cheap it is ... then going through the 30 hours their professional mechanic spent on a full engine rebuild... and the 5000 worth of bling and parts they put on. By the end its only " budget" bike if you have access to a factory race team.

  • @andremardian3532
    @andremardian3532 6 ปีที่แล้ว

awesome bike for a project build. I did the same with a 2001 CR250R. These bike's hands down are the best bang for the buck. I picked one up for $1500.00 and put no more than $600.00 in it ( granted I did all the work my-self ) , new tire's , plastic's, graffix, fork and shock rebuild...etc...etc...If $4K is your budget for this bike I cant wait to see what it looks like. Should be just liked it rolled off the show room floor.

I want an '03 CR 250r to go with my '95 and '84. You guys just sealed it for me, I'm on the hunt for an '03
I use the '95 for New England Off-road( JDay, NETRA) and fun riding.
It's got an FMF Gnarly, 10oz flywheel weight, 13/52 gearing. I can start the race in 2nd, hit 3rd and never go back below 3rd most of the rest of the ride.
We have some nasty tight trails up here too. Good luck, subscribed and waiting on the next video!

I gave $1500 for my mint 04 yz250 with maybe 10hrs on it. All I did was change the gearing, add a flywheel weight, and a new top end. Its a great trail bike and I don’t have to take my 450 off the track which is the main reason I got it.

Supply and demand, because of this video used CRs have gone up 80%... LOL, I even want to clean one up for a practice bike now! Loved my 03 CR250. When I made the jump to an 07 450 that was my last bike until this year when I picked up a new 300 XC. I left the sport because of the maintenance on the 450 and the fact it sucked in the woods on non track days coupled with college expenses at the time.

I have 2 2003 cr250r's and love them... do you yourself a favor and put a keihin pwk 38 air Stryker and a torque spacer in front of the carb. mx bonz air box mod is a must as well as the stock airbox will let dirt by. 12 Oz flywheel weight while you are at it and 2.5 weight oil in the rear shock and forks will be a good choice for trail duty. Enduro engineering bar risers will open up the cockpit and an easy pull clutch will be a good option for your left hand... I have one bike with a Rekluse geared at 14x48 and one without rekluse geared at 14x50. a 18 in rear wheel with red hub looks trick as well. hope this helps.

Look at the carb to see if it's has the stock TMX or the PWK.
Besides an 18" rear wheel w/ Tubliss and a flywheel weight. The air Stryker carb was what made the bike.
I actually preferred my 03 CR (set up for woods riding) over my 2018 XC-W.
Assuming the top end is good, they love Amsoil saber @ 80:1.
Is the kick start lever, rear brake lever, or shifter is sloppy, replace those as well as any loose bearings. It'll feel like a brand new bike, controls wise.
The real beauty of this bike is the light weight.

Nice seeing a bike in my budget on a video. And what I may expect to pay getting it in shape. Did buy a dt1 250 for 75$. 10k on it. Yeah it needs some love but for the price.

I’ve got TWO brand new factory original never used 2003 exhausts sitting in a box in my basement from when I purchased bikes new in 03. Bikes have since been sold but I’ve still got the exhaust. I’d be glad to donate a pipe and silencer if you like for this build.

You will have a sweet bike when all done. But, you don't want it to gather dust once you are back on your other bikes that you primarily use in the channel. So, here is my idea. We all follow the progress closely and watch and like each segment. You make it a really good offroad bike, tubliss, bearings, necessary maintenance, some cosmetics, etc. Meanwhile, we will watch and hit like on all the videos you release, chronicling the progress. Then when it is done, you should be back from your rehab and take it on a ride with Scott. Lots of video showing how great it turned out. Interviews with each of you saying what you like about it. Get Sam in there too. Then, Print up some shirts and hats, sell them for chances and have a drawing. This may be as popular and possibly even more than the first two you did. OK, there, its been said :-)

I'm biased of course because I'm into vintage stuff, but on a 4k budget I would be looking to put together an air-coolef big-bore Maico. The water-cooled ones are unspeakably powerful, but very rare.
I think the best balance of budget and performance will be either a 76-77 AW-series, or the 78-79 Magnums. We want a 440 if you can get it, or a 400 if you have to settle. Both offer incredibly smooth creamy power without any 2-stroke "hit" at all. Having followed a KTM 300XC-W on my 440, I feel confident in saying the bottom-end grunt is in a different league. Anyway, either of those Maicos should run you 2500-3000.
Being a modern rider like you are, you probably won't dig the old suspension and brakes, especially in the front. If you want to keep it authentic and legal in vintage racing, put some good brake shoes on and install cartridge emulators. Alternatively, you can get the front-end (triple clamps, forks, brake, axle, etc) assembly from a wrecked modern bike very cheaply and adapt it. Maico set the standard for steering geometry that mostly remains today, so things like rake and trail will stay basically identical. If you're starting with an AW, you'll probably want to take 2 inches or so out of the travel because you won't be able to easily match 12 inches in the rear. With a Magnum it's up to you; I'd still go for 10 inches like stock for trails because the shorter wheelbase and lower center of gravity is really sweet, but you can go the full 12 if you feel you need it. For shocks, go ahead and put the whole of the remainder of your budget into them, however much that is. There's a good chance that the bike was upgraded to Ohlins or Works Performance at some point. Either of those are great out of the box, with Works being the better of the two. Both can be rebuilt and revalved to your preference, but Ohlins offers improved internals which give better reliability and performance. Neither is adjustable except for preload, so be nice to your suspension guy. You should now have a disk front and drum rear. You will discover that drums are fine in the rear; the industry went disk rear for marketing and to save 8oz of weight. It took them forever to figure out how to make a disk weak enough to be controllable back there. Give it new shoes and set your pedal feel with return springs; I needed heavier springs on mine because the drum was too powerful.
If you got a bike with a 36mm carb, consider upgrading to a 40mm for better top-end power. I recommend either sticking with the old carbs of the day (Bing or Mikuni VM) because they are very easy to tune. If you want more performance still, skip over all other options and go straight to Lectron. You don't want to try and hunt down the right needle on a modern Keihin for a 440cc piston-port bike.
When you're done, you'll have a killer package. You'll see about 40-42 horsepower at the wheel, which is in line with or perhaps slightly short of a modern 250. But everywhere short of peak rpm, you'll have great googly gobs of torque that is easily controllable with the throttle. You can growl up big gnarly hill climbs in a high gear and cash in on that low-rpm traction. You can roll into the power in the open and surge forward at a pace that would require downshifts (plural) from a 250. You get the advantages (minus the top-end power) of a 450F, but without the weight, without the gyro effect, without the costly rebuilds, and without the snatchy throttle and propensity to stall. You'll have a chassis which many to this day will day turns better than their new MXer does, but you will have fixed the suspension and brakes which drove those guys to get their modern machines. Maintenance is pretty simple; there is no power valve or shock linkage to worry about, no reed valves to inspect, and the engine and transmission are robust. Just know that it is a chain-drive primary which must be inspected occasionally. And, if this matters to you, you will get A TON of attention and praise everywhere you go for riding one of the most legendary machines ever made. You will hear the phrases "It was like cheating" and "I never shoulda sold it" over and over and over. And they're right.
