0:49 Well this is a great start. 🤣 1:06 and that is fine. I knew exactly where this was headed. Not even sure why the previous statement needed to be made. Your title pretty much covers the main point. Well I have my drink and am ready for some education. I really need to play the game more before I get into the rest of the expansions. Something I love with this game over the previous is that you don't actively annihilate other players buildings (expansion material). Raiding was utterly destruptive when the one faction (barbarians) stops over everything else a struggling player is trying to get by. Also previous game felt like there was an incredible point gain gap between the factions. Egyptians, Amazons, and Barbarians were just rediculous, also Aztecs if you are lucky. Edit: All of these races exist/existed in the northern hemisphere. 🤓
Played this game again today after many plays over a year ago. Chose the Japanese faction with Storage phase. Man, those few extra rules took so long for me to wrap my head around. I love this game, and loved playing that faction once I got going, but sage like advice putting Japanese last. Great video!
I bought this game used a couple years ago, and finally played it last night. We all really liked it. I consider it a nice break from one of our other favorite games in that same line, 51st State. Thanks to your buyers guide I now have some Barbarians headed this way...good going Luke 🤪
Seen every faction in the base game now except the easiest faction. It's odd to say that for me they felt a bit samey. Now I know each clan has varied focus with a particular gimmick. Ulaf lean towards sailing, Pannuk uses building bonuses from non-field locations, Heidel un/assign workers, Nanurjuk relies on building and removing field locations, and Mackinnon is about un/assigning resources and workers while multplying them. So it's time I thought about looking at expansions. On side note, this game feels more balanced than Imperial Settlers. Some of those clans are just designed with an unfair advantage, and the expansion material has some ludicrous powerful cards for only a handful of the factions. Egyptians are harsh, and if combat is allowed Barbarians are dangerous. Aztecs can be rediculously swingy with their luck mechanic, and Amazons are just straight up godly if there isn't anything being done directly to them. I feel Romans have it the hardest to win with because of the reliance on resources they can't readily obtain unlike the others (do I need to metion how unfair it is for a faction to just straight up gain, and hoard gold coins?). edit: 7:11 Hmm that's an ambiguous card. How does that read? Is it just me or would it play out as follows: 3 player game, attach a skull token to a field location (say 1 axe). If that player uses this field location, barbarian player gets 2 axes (because 2 opponents)
That was a great video and very much appreciated. The Japanese factions are my favourite in the game so far. The Romans are also fun, but feel less interactive. I have purchased the Barbarians and Egyptians, but have not used them yet. I am afraid that power creep is happening as the newer clans seem to outperform the clans in the base game except for the Mackinnon clan.
There is the potential for that, but I haven't noticed it as of yet - with the new factions, they can do some nice stuff but then also take more effort to make work well. I would imagine if I put some of those high difficulties on a complete novice, they'd fall flat.
I own all of the expansions although I have yet to play any of them. I will get the Barbarians to the table posthaste! Thanks for your insights on them, Luke.
Hello again, great video. Have you given any thought on the balance between the clans? We just played a three player game. I had Trajan and won by a large margin with ease.
Found this video late. Empires of the North replaced IS for me. I'll have to take a look at the folded space insert. My favorite clan is Umineko. Such an interesting addition to the docking and storage phases. if I would make a top clan list, Umineko would be #1 followed by #2 Buddica, #3 Amenhotep, Flavian, McKinnon, Ulaf.
I really enjoy this game, just taking out a deck and competing. Have all the expansions, and the box is packed full, so if they want to release another, we're going to need a bigger box. I need an insert for this game, tossed the base insert out a while ago.
Oh Come On... 😂 I just finally purchased and got into Imperial Settlers. But I guess Empires of the North should sit next to it on the shelf. Oh btw I was finally able to get Tuscany EE ( back in stock ) and the metal coins 👍 Thanks
Love this as a solo game but find the original Imperial Settlers and 51st state works better in multiplayer - just too little interaction between players in EotN. I also find EotN to be a tougher game to teach to new players seeing how unique every clan is, and just by looking at the official FAQ there's a lot of rules/cards that can be misinterpreted. I've spent more time looking up rules clarifications on BGG for this game than any other in my collection. Will you do a review for Rise of the Empire for Imperial Settlers?
Fraid I don't have much expertise with that expansion but reviews for it haven't been overly positive. I found all 3 types of Settlers games to not be that great for multiplayer interaction, but State was ultra generic in feel and player differentiation. IS had some cool mechanics and a nice solo mode but having to deck build for balance when you got expansions was a pain.

Glad this guide was useful!
Thanks Luke. Loving the base game and this is super helpful.
Happy to help!
Thanks for the review! My friends and I played base game plus Roman and now we’re looking to expand and this video helped!
Glad I could help! Was hoping this video would get some more love!

This is super helpful. EOTN is in my top 5 to buy list, and I didn't even know there were all these expansions. Good job on pronouncing Boudicca 😁
Thanks and glad I could pronounce at least one name correctly! 😅

Thanks Luke, I never knew I needed those expansions, but now I do :) I've got a solo promo from BGG store I haven't tried yet...
Glad I could help! Note you don't NEED, you just WANT! ;-)
Very useful video; many thanks!
You're welcome thanks!!
Perfect timing as I just got the base game!
Hope it's useful!!
@@TheBrokenMeeple It was. I was planning on getting Egyptians first based on theme but now I’m thinking Romans or horde.
Hello again, great video. Have you given any thought on the balance between the clans? We just played a three player game. I had Trajan and won by a large margin with ease.
I don't play it enough to really comment on game balance - but I haven't had major issues from my experience.

IS is finally leaving my collection as a result! EotN takes the podium.
Thank you for the video. This has been very helpful 😀
I'm so glad it was of use to you David! This is why I want this series to take off!
Thanks for the review!

I go over the Folded Space one at the end.

We have both and have no desire to cull one or the other. They feel like very different engine builders.
Great video on images, but the voice audio is a bit hard to hear.
Ever thought of adding some memes from Guy Ritchie style gangster films? Snatch? Lock, Stock? Might be fertile ground.
If only I'd watched any. Not a big gangster fan.
Hey Luke, thanks for this video. I have a question regarding Nanurjuk. Can I return a Basic field to my hand and construct it again later.?
Yeah I believe so

I play EOTN solo a lot. Can these expansions also be played solo?
Yes, easily, it's just a faction choice.
I think they are apples 😂
