Pokemon Legends Arceus Shocked Me... | Review

  • Pokemon Legends Arceus for Nintendo Switch has arrived and many are asking "is this the Breath Of The Wild moment for the series?" As someone who has been borderline hyper critical of the incredibly stagnant franchise, I can't say yes to that question assuredly. That's not a bad thing. Pokemon follows Monster Hunter most as a template and it's better for it. The level of interaction and dynamic exploration moments make this a future worth believing in.

As I mentioned in the video, I have a retrospective out on the brilliance of Pokemon Stadium from 1998. If you haven't checked it out, I think it really captures the transformation of going from 8 bit on Game Boy Color to the full 3D models that the Nintendo 64 was capable of thus transforming Pokemon truly is - th-cam.com/video/BxrU5WKDzYA/w-d-xo.html

lets keep in mind that yes, highest grossing FRANCHISE, but its not by the games... sadly, that means the investors push for other priorities than the games. We may never see a pokemon game not made in less than 3 years unless the toys sells less or the game make so much money that it becomes a priority again. This series is the perfect definition of too successfull.

I was born in the 90s and grew up with Pokémon, I’ve witnessed the gaming world grow and evolve over my life and it was so frustrating to love games that just wanted to rest on their laurels. I bought bdsp and put it down within hrs. After many discussions with friends in the same boat I felt like “Pokémon games are no longer for me”. Sword/shield looked like it belonged in the 3ds and bdsp didn’t feel fun to me. This game has reinvigorated my love for Pokémon and for the 1st time in forever I feel like they are going in the right direction and that’s exciting.

About the music, I too think the moments of silence were the best, it enhanced the feeling of being alone in this vast world, but also when the music starts, its a soft crescendo that grows with your pacing, gets quiet when you stop and ramps up when you’re speeding through the herds of pokemons, its always perfectly placed. My favourite theme is Obsidian Fields. That cello just MELTS me like butter.

I gotta say, after watching this franchise going to shit for years, which was particularly saddening for me as someone who has been with the series since Gen 1, I was pleasantly surprised by Legends Arceus. It doesn’t make up for all the crap Game Freak has put out for years, but it is definitely a step in the right direction. I only hope that this game means Game Freak is finally starting to learn its lesson, will put more effort into their games from now on, and that things will only go uphill from here. For the first time in a while, I’m cautiously optimistic about the future of the Pokémon franchise.

As someone whose also been around since gen 1, a step in the right direction isn’t enough at this point it still subpar for an actual game. If it didn’t have the Pokémon skin graphically and for the content of the game I wouldn’t pay 30$ for it. They are still just playing off the Pokémon name.

This is the first Pokemon game I've really played since FireRed/LeafGreen and I am having a ton of fun with it. With that said, it feels REALLY rough a lot of the time. I honestly dislike the environmental visuals a lot... there's no artistic or visual flair to it; it's just stock environments pasted in from some kind pool of assets.
Thankfully, the gameplay upgrade(s) are very welcomed and truly make the series feel new again. I really like how fast-paced it is and how leveling and catching Pokemon basically feels like a proper Action game instead of an RPG (I like RPGs mind you... just tired of the Pokemon formula.) What surprised me the most is how much I enjoy completing the Pokemon Index. It seems like it would be extremely monotonous to me, but it has me thoroughly devoted to completing it.
Overall, way better than I expected it to be, but definitely as good as I'd hoped. But as a lot of people have said, it is more of a solid foundation than something truly special. I sincerly hope they stick to this for a few more games and continue to improve upon it until we get something truly wonderful.

It's the first I've really loved since Gen 5, personally. Gen 5 got me really excited for the future of Pokémon. It was the first mainline Pokémon game to feel like a proper JRPG. This game is so much fun, I didn't even care about the few things like graphical polish or lack of voice acting. I actually think the graphics are pretty in a way, like a painting. I wouldn't even say they are low res - more low detail like broad brush strokes. At the end of the day, if a game is great, the graphics don't really matter so after 100+ hours played, I'd give it a 9/10, especially after the free dlc update which took my game time from 70 hours to over 100 and still going.

I really like this game now that I’ve finished the main story. You’re right, the story isn’t for everyone (I feel it got in the way of the gameplay loop for me) but i think this game is a great model moving forward. One thing I’ve come to really like is building your team in this one because it matters WAY more. Since the wild Pokémon are so incredibly strong you really have to put a stronger focus on typing which makes me constantly looking for Pokémon I can add that will fill in the typing gaps. Overall I love this game and I’m incredibly excited to see where they take it.

Not a huge fan of portable gaming beyond my days of riding in the back seat of my parents car, so missed out on a bunch until Let's Go / Sword & Sheild. I actually felt Let's Go was a nice nostalgia trip, if a bit on the easy side but that's not a bad thing. Really wish this game came out during more of a lul as I've got quite a stack of games to play & have some highly anticipated ones (Sifu, Elden Ring, Tiny Tina's Wonderland, Kirby and the Forgotten land & Stranger of Paradise) coming out too close to pick up Pokemon until later when I'm recovered from all the RPG I can take to the face. For sure picking this one up, but not in a rush either.

I started with Platinum years ago but never gotten to complete the game because I was a dumb kid who couldn't understand Pokemon typing and didn't like turn base at the time so I stopped playing the game. Years later I gotten myself Pokemon Moon in 2018 to see if I would finally enjoy a pokemon game since I grew to enjoy turn base games and I did start to enjoy the game from start to finish but never completed the pokedex. My friend bought me BDSP and though I did beaten the game I quickly stopped playing afterwards because the post game was just the Grand Underground mining, so I just waited for Legends Arceus.
My friend bought me Legends Arceus even though I was planning to buy it myself so I used my money to buy the game for him last week and the moment we both opened the game we didn't stop playing, the gameplay loop was addicting and the story was interesting to watch unfold and all of this ended up with me completing my first pokedex in a Pokemon game and felt rewarded for doing so. I really hope they carry this into the next Pokemon game because as of now my friend and I are excited to see what the next game is going to look like.

I like this much about it. It’s set in an older sinnoh. I wish Mew had a story in it. I wish we saw people marrying their Pokémon. Maybe Arceus 2 will hit and we get to see that but outside of the dope mechanics, that’s what i like about the game. It’s set in the past with our future character.

Matty, it's interesting your mention of your last real care for the games was Sun/Moon. Same for me. I played through Moon and enjoyed it for the most part, but again lost any and all interest cause of the sorely outdated gameplay.
Then this dropped and after thinking for a day or two, I bought it and I haven't been able to play anything else since. I am in absolute Pokemon heaven with this title. I love it so much that I bought a SECOND copy full price for my daughter, without batting an eye. I don't mind because I want GF to have no doubts about the direction for future titles.

I love this game. Its one of the best Pokemon titles ever released. Today i the game solidified itself for me. Im working on catching Eevee's in a specific spawn and I manage to get like 2 each at level 3. But then I notice an outbreak of them in another area so I go there and catch like 10 Eevee's more than I needed and better yet they were all above level 50. Now it was a coincidence that this in game spawning event occurred as I was trying to catch enough Eevee's for evolution but that doesn't lessen the moment. It was an experience no other Pokemon game has ever given me. I gaming moment that I will remember fondly for years. And thats something I never thought I would say about a Pokemon game.

On your point about this maybe not being for people who aren’t fans of Pokémon: My girlfriend really doesn’t like Pokémon games. She was never really a Nintendo kid but I’ve been getting her into Mario and Zelda of late and she thinks a lot of the Pokémon are cute but she just isn’t into the gameplay. She likes some rpgs but for some reason she just really has no interest in playing Pokémon. But this game she’s interested in. I was watching the last trailer before launch and she looks over at the screen and says “that’s the new Pokémon game? That actually looks really cool, I’d probably play THAT” and I was honestly shocked. So I got the game and I’ve been playing the hell out of it, thoroughly enjoying it. I’ll fully admit that the graphics and stuff like objects and Pokémon and characters popping in and out are really disappointing, but the gameplay is so good that it has made up for that to the point where it hasn’t bothered me at all while playing. Anyway, my girlfriend has been seeing me play sometimes and she’s actually interested. She said she wants to play it herself whenever I’m done with it, and I can’t believe it. She actually wants to play a Pokémon game. The gameplay is fun and exciting enough that someone who has been adamant about not playing Pokémon for her whole life is now gonna play it. Technical issues aside, I think they really nailed it with this game. The story is a bit predictable and also has some plot holes but I love the change from the usual formula and it was actually a pretty enjoyable story, and I feel like once you get to the mid to late game there isn’t much handholding anymore, at least a major improvement over the most recent Pokémon games. While the graphics of the over world are definitely disappointing, the character and Pokémon models (specifically the Pokémon) look great and the battle animations are amazing, a huge step up. These battle animations are what I was expecting in sword and shield, actually even better than that. The size of the Pokémon is fucking awesome. I caught an alpha Gabite and evolved it and the garchomp absolutely dwarfs my character and is taller than almost every other Pokémon I come across. I think that gabite is one of the scripted alpha encounters but I’m not sure. The quality of life improvements such as releasing multiple Pokémon, the new move learning system, the highly improved battle ui, etc are all very welcome and really improved the experience for me. Obviously the real time action is a great way to change up Pokémon, and while it’s not perfect it feels fun to dodge around and avoid attacks from Pokémon in real time. It feels like the anime, everyone is saying that and that’s what I think we’ve all been looking for from Pokémon for a long time. I like the “boss battles”, though I think they could be a little bit harder. I didn’t black out to a single one of the noble Pokémon, and I think anyone that has played any sort of game with a dodging system probably had the same experience. But I bet it was a good challenge for more casual gamers, and we can’t forget that Pokémon IS supposed to be for anyone really. I think this might be the best Pokémon game ever, and I can’t believe I’m saying that after years of mediocre games over and over again. I think the yearly release of multiple games puts too much pressure on game freak to allow them to make good games, and up until now they had a really hard time finding the balance that allowed them to make a good game in that short time. The game is compromised in graphics and some other technical aspects because they obviously put all of their time and energy into making the amazing gameplay. This even explains why bdsp sucked so much, obviously everything they had went into legends arceus and bdsp was just bare minimum effort. The Pokémon company needs to change their plan with these games and do a release every 2 years maybe.

    Genuinely, I like what they did with Arceus. It was known to change typings IN BATTLE through the power of plates, using types in which give it the upper hand. In this case, I like what they did in Legends: Arceus. They made Arceus be able to change to a super effective typing through its signature move, judgement with the legend plate. It really does let Arceus shine, as in previous games, other pokemon overshadowed it in terms of PvP until this game came, although there is not any pvp in Legends: Arceus ;-;

I was surprised and enjoyed the whole experience. I don’t know if is fair to say that I doesn’t look good or that it doesn’t do anything “new”. Not every game has to reinvent the wheel. What they basically did is a very enjoyable Pokémon game, with open world aspects and a more immersive and interactive experience using weather and time. To me this is one of their best entries ever.

There are honestly funny and sad moments. I love that despite the overworld being slightly lackluster, it has an aestletic. The character expressions are great too, and certainly beats the dead eyes of previous games. I completed the main/post game and STILL have questions and theories. 4/5 stars for me

Only thing I will say, is I've never been so hungry for more powerful Nintendo hardware. Game really doesn't look or even run great - it just needs a bit of a boost to eliminate the aliasing and stabilising the frame rate to an even 30

I feel like this is the Pokémon game for those that entered the world through Pokémon GO. I know many, many people who had never played a Pokémon game until PoGO. Lots of veteran Pokémon players would complain to us new people about game mechanics and battling and stuff, but for me and the other new players new to the series through PoGO, it was just whining. This seems to combine the best of both entrance points for Pokémon. Open world and catching mechanics alongside battling very similar to the traditional series. I absolutely love this game.
