  • Autocharge is a gamechanger for EV charging. So I figured it was time for me to test it for myself. To find out how it went, stick around as Dave Takes It On.

Thanks for all the comments on this one. Sorry for forgetting to include the screenshots - it was an oversight when putting the video together. We're planning to release a follow-up video that includes a full autocharge session and the screenshots we missed. We've made the screenshots available for free on our Patreon page as a public post: www.patreon.com/posts/101478139

Dave, the information that you convey in your videos holds no bounds! Its so refreshing to have a non- egotistical, non-sponsored, unbiased youtube channel, I do hope that it continues this way.
It turned out not to be the seamless experience expected.
Still an app to open to select the pump and start the charge.
Hopefully the next time you use a fastned this wont be necessary? Maybe you will do a follow-up video on the fastned experience?

Thanks for your lovely feedback. In hindsight, we should have completed a full autocharge session - rather than just the setup process - for this video. We're planning to release a follow-up video when we can get back to the site.

I think if the video had started showing you turning up to the Fastned charger, plugged in and walked away, while the charge happened all by itself, would have made a more impressive intro.
Although we know the feature works and it’s useful to see how it is setup nowadays, as when I did it a year ago it there was nothing confusing about it because I first told the app that at my next charging session I wanted the auto charge to be activated, I then followed the charger’s own screen instructions rather then the app to start a new charging session and if I remember correctly auto charge was then set up from that moment. They might therefore have change the process every so slightly now.

Dave - thanks for this, I enabled Autocharge, went round to my local Fastned EVSE, completed the process and charging started. Then I stopped, unplugged and re-plugged, it started automatically, this is a great addition to the Fastned service. I paid £0.69/init. Once again thank you for bring attention to this facility.

Sorry Dave, I appreciate the work you put in on this but it was inaccurate and muddled. I have been using autocharge without problem since August 2022. So I expect you could have used it last summer. Perhaps you just used contactless on your previous visit. Autocharge has worked at all their chargers I’ve used in the EU and the UK since then ie 19 times. With a shared charger they need to pair you, your credit card and your car or someone else could connect. Also you can end the charge and release the connector on the charger screen in two presses. It is sometime ago that I set up Autocharge but I think I set this up while doing an app initiated charge and it was just a matter of ticking a box in the app.
Please put things right by revisiting a Fastned charger asap.
I also find the app good. You can view your charging live even when you did not use the app when plugging in.
PS please tell us about the facilities in more detail when reviewing chargers. Fastned impressed me by putting in a loo after I and I assume others complained about lack of a toilet in Boppard. Being able to give them feedback about a charger while charging is great.
PPS what happened to the promised screen shots?

  • @michaelgoode9555

I remain unconvinced. Just pay by contactless. All this faffing and loading your phone with apps is a load of old BS. It's just a data harvesting front.
The ev charging industry is data hungry and needs really strong regulation. Back in the day when I used to buy petrol I simply paid at kiosk or counter, end of.
Given the extremely high cost of public charging there should be no need for data harvesting.
Thinking about this I can cover my charging needs away from home here in the UK with 3 charge cards: electroverse, VW's card and a ChargePlace Scotland card. No pre auth fees and a small card wallet to carry. Still 3 too many imo.

Great video Dave. I had problems setting up the auto charge at St Albans. It refused to initiate until I had tick boxed a deep down setting in the Fastned app that related to emissions. Why would you need to accept this when you are obviously using an electric car? Very strange, but other than that auto charge finally got setup and I tested it straight away with no problem.

A suggestion for you to make to providers...
That duel shared bays with high fast charge rates could indicate, when one bay is not charging, that the first vehicle there is say 10 minutes from completion or their demand has slowed to say 30kwh. This could be a simple green light visible to any cars arriving on site! What do you think? This would ensure users get the best out of shared charge units.
    What do you think?

I like the idea of auto charge but it is about having choices, you don’t have to use it. I have the Fastned app set up on my phone but I don’t think it will work with my current EV, an older Hyundai Ioniq 38. I don’t think all EV’s can use auto yet. However, my lease ends this summer and the option to auto charge on a new car is a feature I will want on a new EV. I am hoping that other charging companies, like Gridserve and Osprey, will follow suit. Thank you for your mistake about plugging in first, will learn from that in the future.

Here's what Google AI has to say to my question below....
When I plug in my EV using the CCS charger. What information does the car provide to the charger over the CCS connection? Can the network identify my car VIN
      Google AI replied .......
The information exchanged between your car and a CCS charger follows a specific protocol called the SAE J1722. Here's a breakdown of what gets communicated:
      Car to Charger:
Battery information: This includes current state of charge (SOC), battery health, and capacity. This helps the charger determine the appropriate power level and charging profile for your battery.
Maximum current: The car specifies its maximum allowable current for charging, ensuring safe operation within its limits.
Thermal regulation: The car might communicate its cooling system capabilities to the charger. This allows the charger to adjust charging power based on battery temperature, optimizing charging speed without overheating the battery.
Safety status: The car can signal any fault conditions or safety concerns that might prevent charging.
      Charger to Car:
Available power: The charger informs the car of its maximum available power output.
Voltage and current: The charger confirms the specific voltage and current levels it will provide for charging.
Charging profile: The charger might offer different charging profiles based on factors like battery type and desired charging speed. The car can negotiate the most suitable profile.
      VIN identification:
While the CCS protocol allows for transmitting a unique vehicle identifier, it doesn't necessitate including the entire VIN. The charger might use a different identifier assigned by the car manufacturer for communication purposes.
In essence, the data exchange ensures safe and efficient charging by enabling the car and charger to work together optimally. The network might not directly identify your car using the VIN, but it likely has a unique identifier associated with your car for billing or network management purposes.

There are parking charges but not for charging if you go to reception at the hotel to register for free parking. The people in the pub came out (which was nice of them) and also told us but there are signs on the chargers too.

Temporary EVs until hydrogen takes over..hydrogen can be produced from oil and gas so no job lossess

    • @patdbean
      @patdbean 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

If you make hydrogen from gas, then it is just as dirty as burning oil.
If you make it by electrolysis of water, then you use 3 times the electricity compared to just charging a battery. So for the uk's 38,000,000 road vehicals that would be 240twh a year against 80twh a year for just charging the 38 million batteries directly.
There is a reason why there are only 6 public hydrogen filling stations and about 500 hydrogen vehicals in the UK.
