    This was such a great weekend. The cherry on top was when one of the guys at the Bronco Falls obstacle told me "You guys can't go up this" , referring to the "buggy line"..... Well, I just HAD to do it😊 Thanks for a great video!

      @@fpglinko8156 I know some loyalists have a undying love affair with the "brand" , but the "Rover" V8 isn't true Rover, and it's the most over-rated piece of junk they ever re-purposed.... Led to more 1990's USA market Land Rovers getting scrapped.... The "Penalty Box" has an iron block truck version of the Chevy LS (Gen III) small block V8.
      This 4.8 litre engine is mated to a Chevrolet SM420 four speed (7.06 1st gear) and aftermarket Orion 4:1 transfer case. The extreme low gearing of these units offsets the 3.50 ring and pinion ratio that I swapped into the original axles (along with air lockers and my own 32 spline shafts). Overall crawl ratio is 99:1, and she cruises at 2700 RPM at 70MPH on the interstate. It's just a personal thing, but I have always driven my rigs everywhere, never trailered, so they have to cruise at freeway speeds and be very reliable.
      Also, one key element that people who swap that crappy "Rover" v8 into these ignore, is that the original 4 cylinder engines are extremely heavy.... This nose weight is a big part of what makes these good rock climbers, and they throw that away !! I am currently working on a plug-in over / underdrive (3 speed) unit for the Rover and Willys transfer cases to allow this kind of gearing in an otherwise stock vehicle.

    • @timmcooper294
      @timmcooper294 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fpglinko8156 No "Rover" V8 (That's a Buick anyhow) those are really fragile and no power, anyway. I swapped in an iron block Chevy LS truck engine (the 4.8 litre flavor) that makes a TON more power than a 4.6 litre Rover v8, while being a lot more reliable. One of the biggest advantages, though, is that it retained the nose heavy setup like the original 4 cylinder... those were heavy engines !! Maintaining the nose weight in these really helps the climbing. I run a Chevy SM420 4 speed transmission with 7.06 first gear, and a 4:1 Orion transfer case. I retained the original series I Land Rover front and rear axles , adding air lockers and made my own 1.400" 32 spline front and rear axle shafts, keeping the original semi-floating rear setup (it's stronger) 24 spline shafts just aren't strong enough... Ring and pinion ratio is 3.50 (28x8), overall crawl ratio is 99:1 and it cruises effortlessly at 70 mph on the interstate. Chassis and leaf springs are stock, but shocks are relocated with different mounts for better clearance and 9" travel shocks. It's a very simple vehicle, but it's very reliable and goes good.

      Yea, the big guys with the goatees sneered at our little rigs, and they needed an attitude adjustment. Jeff and Jesse passed on doing it in front of the crowd, but later decided to give it a try. Jeff had business to get back to, but Jesse and I went back on Sunday and we carefully walked it, picked the line and he did it in Brutus !!! Stan has more common sense and knows where to draw the line !! (Sometimes😉) I think next year Jesse and Jeff, along with me, will all do it together.

      I am positive that one of the reasons our little rigs climb walls so well is the lower center of gravity. The Penalty Box felt rock solid at the top of the last obstacle (nobody else climbed it other than the trail leader black JK Buggy) Grampas Jeep does things that most "experts" would say it couldn't, and I also feel the downsides of lifting outweigh the upsides on these little rigs.

    • @pdv76
      @pdv76 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was thinking about the exact same thing last night about your “little” rigs. I’m going to try and get my running gear as level with the underside of my chassis as possible and then cut down a body lift so I only have half an inch of clearance above the gearbox. Bigger tyres are the only way to get more room under your diffs unless you are spending big money on portal axles.

    • @timmcooper294
      @timmcooper294 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@pdv76 One thing that several of us have done is "streamline" the running gear / suspension, reducing hang-ups. I won't raise my drive train, as again, too many drawbacks. I like stock propshaft angles for durability / freedom from vibration and U-joint breakage. I built "rock ski" spring plates, and shaved the drain plugs off my differentials, which gained the same as 2" taller tires. Little things can make a big difference !! I draw the line on my own mods, requiring myself to keep the original axle assemblies, original type leaf springs and mounting points, and the 7.50-16 tire size, which was the largest factory available size during the era. The spirit of these rigs is to keep them simple and very stock appearing. That has its limitations, but I'm super happy with those limitations...... It's fun !!!

      @ I like your triple layered skid plate. I want to lift my engine and gearbox up as high as I can go as my exhaust hangs below the chassis and looks overly exposed. I’ve never built such a small 4x4 before so not sure what is possible with drive line angles etc? I don’t want to lift the CJ5 to keep as much stability as possible and will only be running 31” tyres as they are the cheapest option in Australia. I appreciate you taking the time to reply to my comments. I’m jealous of your group of friends that go 4wheeling together, my Jeep friends all run big V8 rigs on 37s with long arm suspension. Stay safe on the trails
