Lovely film of your new pup. I would be interested as to how you stop the pup from being in front of you. This is an issue I have. Loose lead walking is not going well.

It’s amazing how you get your pups (Charlie and now billy)of 3-4 months to do perfectly good retrieving and up on your chest, please do a video to help us folk that are struggling to get our pups to do what you are doing as i shaw there’s more people like me having trouble than folk getting perfect retrieves at 3-4 months.

I wish my spaniel was a keen retriever. 6 months old and never been fussed, been going to a gundog trainer who’s said I need to work on his hunting more so and to use a cold pheasant to make it more exciting

great video. i am getting a new cocker at the end of the year. Really enjoy your training methods . One thing that i have not mastered is the hunt whistle. Can you do a demo on that?

Hi there, I recently did a video on whistle commands. If you look down three by Videos you should be able to find it.th-cam.com/video/lcCQbI691Y4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=E8lgpyiFbTOaopv0

Love these vids. Are you spitting on the leaves? Also is the noise (brrb) specific for training billy? Thanks

Yes, putting in my natural scent that I carry around with me onto the retrieve also moisture helps with the scent level. The funny whistle sound is a hunt whistle.

Likely going to be a very common question but how many hours a day training from 12 weeks should you been looking to spend with a new pup? I know that's like asking, how long is a piece of string, but I am looking to get a new Springer pup and want to know how to bring them on without overloading them.

So in the early months, it's all about a really good structure to create routine where you're having a dog out for short periods of time and the dog is away in its crate. This is important on a lot of different levels and for different reasons I predominate only do about five minutes of actual training, a date with a pup under four months old.

I just wondered how you cope when other dogs come up and distract him. That’s a prob I have here in the woods. There’s just so many dogs about nowadays. And early and late times are often when there are problem dogs off lead. I also note Billy didn’t run off!! Mine takes off immediately. Distracted by flying birds and squirrels. I have to long lead outside.
In my garden I can focus him off lead in the main. Indoor training is 100%. So I guess it’s distraction and a fear of other dogs that makes him bolt. He also doesn’t care for my expensive dummies when out in a wood or park. 😱

A lot of that comes from too much exposure to things that Dog doesn't need to know about too early. You've got to get the fundamentals in place with no distractions before you even consider adding in any external conditions that you can't control.☺️🐾

Got my own 20-week-old springer at home. Struggling with the slip lead, he's perfect until he gets distracted, he starts to pull with all his body, and you can hear him struggling to breathe. Ive tried stopping but he immediately sits and looks at me as he's meant to, yet when I begin walking again, he's straight back to pulling hard. Any ideas?

I had the same issue, I finally met some spaniel trainers and they put the slip over the one ear above the cartilage and around the neck if that makes sense, opposite where you are standing, and snug it up, nothing crazy just so it stays put. My slip has a stopper on it. The first time I did it my dog was scratching at it, and thinking I was nuts but after a few go arounds with it, he is keeping his head up with no problem and stopped all the crazy pulling. You don't need to be pulling or correcting, the dog figures out to just stop the craziness and relaxes and just starts walking.

@@itz_frank8473 just to make sure I was clear, put it on like normal, then slip up the one side over the ear. :) And keep the first few sessions really short til they get use to it.

Sadly, some dogs just don't have a very big retrieve drive. See you then need to focus on what you can do like your trainer said work on the hunting and use whatever he will pick and that might well only be dead bird but at least he is then retrieving .👍
