  • You've asked for it for years. Finally... we went looking for sins in The Phantom Menace, and boy do we regret it. So many sins we had to split them into two parts to avoid causing any sin-related overdoses.
    The above video is Part 2. Part 1 is here, ya'll: • Video
    Next week: Some stuff and some things.
    Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins do YOU want to see recounted?

    9:13 that is EXACTLY the same situation Anakin and Obi-Wan are in, in Revenge of the Sith! Darth Maul could (and should) have killed Obi-Wan because he had the high ground! *ding*

    • @Ghi102
      @Ghi102 8 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      +Emile Vinesh Apparently, you learn in some books that Obi-Wan was basically from that point on obsessed with the idea of defending himself when there is a height difference (either when he's on the high ground or the low ground) because he does not want this to happen to him (being killed like Darth Maul, or being stuck without means to defend himself). So in Revenge of the Sith, when Anakin is on the low ground, Obi-Wan knows what to do and knows Anakin doesn't, that's why he tells Anakin not to jump, because he knows he will have to harm Anakin to stop him.
      It's probably still a sinnable offence since they never really show that on camera and because everything outside the movies and Clone Wars is now non-canon.

      @oddtail_tiger 8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      +Ghi102 even if it was explicitly mentioned in the movies, it'd still be pretty frickin' stupid. Darth Maul does literally nothing to a Jedi who jumps at him because the plot says so. You don't have to be a master of lightsaber fighting to be able to react to that. And DM was actually able to fight two Jedi to a standstill, so he's not supposed to be a pushover.

      Obi-Wan learned from his duel with Maul and used that knowledge to defeat Anakin. If anything, it should be a sin off.

    • @JeebusCripes21
      @JeebusCripes21 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Ghi102 Right, because it would take a master strategist to know that if someone trying to kill you is a foot over your head, your proper defense is to stab upward. Definitely requires some intense studying.
      More importantly, Jedi and Sith are supposed to possess super-human reflexes (like Qui-Gon grabs Jar Jar's tongue with no effort). If I could easily stop someone leaping over me, I'm not sure why a Sith would be unable to.

It is used by astronomers--mostly in kiloparsecs (which is one thousand parsecs)--to ease the burden of measuring the distances between objects at literal astronomical distances.

      From how I understand it, (from an insane night where I lost hours of my life down the 'wookiepedia hole' where I found insanity and nerd facts.) The Naboo have several royal families and each have a political leaning/agenda similar to a presidential, or prime minister candidate. When the royals come of age they are thrown into the ring of available leaders to be voted upon, so every however many years, you'd vote between the royal houses. A lot of prolific houses and many citizens are loosely related to certain royal families and so your family might be a loyal Amidala voter/follower like a sports team mixed with a political group... kinda odd.
      So first you vote for the house, then for the individual (if there is contest, or more than one viable ruler) and it said they often chose young girls because they had empathy and Naboo had a warlike past that nearly destroyed them, so they tend to vote for people like Padme who are kind and honorable and empathetic.
      So in a sense, there are different royal houses/families and they each have a distinct personality and political standing and when time comes you vote for the family you want, then the individual. So I'd vote for House Amidala, then Padme Amidala.
      Naboo is strange, but that honestly sounds like great system. A good balance between a monarchy and democracy, so the people don't become trapped under an unjust ruler based on their name. You can vote another bloodline into power as needed. I'm sure it isn't perfect, but I'd bet it would work very well. Unlike a normal democracy, where any idiot could be voted leader, the Naboo way ensures that a ruler is chosen from one of the people who have been groomed and prepared to rule, who have been trained and understand politics and law... etc. It could keep a businessman with selfish interests from taking control, or keep a violent dictatorship from happening because of the rival families. There is just enough rivalry and competition to make everyone better and want to be the best possible option, but not so much that it could cause a civil war or unrest, and if it did you have at least one royal family to count on as backup. Pretty cool.
      Hope that helped, I do deep dives on stuff like this sometimes. I wondered myself after watching clone wars and saw there was a new queen unrelated to Padme and was curious as to how/why. Now we know.

      TheAlphaFury
      You may want to try to watch "The Phantom Edit." Basically, it mixes in the extended scenes from the DVD and cuts a whole lot of stuff out. Jar Jar is in less and the ending to Phantom Menace is LITERALLY what Jeremy said would have been a better ending (ends on Palpatine's face at the funeral). Makes it a B rather than a C- movie.
      The edit on Attack of the Clones still makes it a shitty movie but makes Padme less of a tease. IE, when Anakin and Padme kiss, it ends before she says "no, we shouldn't." Makes the romance seem a HELL of a lot less forced and out of nowhere. Still not good as it is now 'implied' and you don't see how a connection could have come up but it is a lot less of a "WHAT?!" thing. To paraphrase TJ Kirk, the edit makes it a lot less of a "did someone force these two to fuck at gunpoint?"

    The hatred doesn't just stem from Jar Jar being one of the most obnoxious characters in any movie ever made, though. He's also a nice representation of everything wrong with the prequels. I think the scene with Anakin and Qui-Gon running back to the ship when Darth Maul attacks them would be much better this way; Qui-Gon is somewhere else (maybe stayed behind for some reason) so Anakin is going to the ship alone, when Darth Maul attacks. Anakin is about to be killed when Obi-Wan saves him- that makes Anakin instantly trust Obi-Wan, and it's his first time seeing a Jedi in action, so he looks up to Obi-Wan. It would be a much better meeting than "Anakin Skywalker, meet Obi-Wan Kenobi."

      The Jedi take potential Jedi from their families at a young age, so that they won't remember them. I guess being emotional attached to them might hinder Jedis on their duty. That's kinda why they say Anakin is too old to be trained, because he's at an age where your long-term memory is well developed. I guess the least the Jedi could have done was try to make Anakin detach from her by keeping her out of his life.
      There's an explanation for most of the prequel trilogie's plot-holes, they just didn't make it into the movies.

      +no hassle Frankly, this is one of the reasons I think Anakin should have been a little older than 9-10 years (maybe 13-14 to match closer to Amidala's age--yeah, can't believe she was only 14 when she's queen). It would make the whole "He's too old" more believable. I would get it if he was entering adolescence, but at 9-10?! That sounds like a perfect age to begin Jedi training.

    • @harrietamidala1691
      @harrietamidala1691 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +no hassle Actually it kinda makes more sense for Yoda to declare Luke too old for training because he's an adult (or you could say Yoda's just getting under Luke's skin by a secret test of character to make sure he REALLY wants it--that's my take). But yeah, 9-10 too old? That's just insane--some people don't even begin life-long training in certain fields (like say, musical instruments) until 9-10 anyway! I started violin at 8 years old.

    just a comment about the gungan shields - obviously borrowed from frank herbert's dune, like so much else in the entire series. the personal shields (and any shields using the holtzmann effect) kept out all projectile fire except lasguns, resisting objects that had high kinetic energy. a slow moving knife/blade could easily penetrate the shields.

    • @JLHunter61
      @JLHunter61 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, just like the personal shields of the Goa'uld on Stargate SG-1. In fact, this is a feature that Jack O'Neill would try to use frequently, with varying degrees of success. That is, until both the bounty hunter (I forget his name or the episode number) and the archeologist in the episode where SG-1 gets caught in a time loop, both have discovered shields where NOTHING can penetrate, and in the case of the archeologist, the shield actually imparts a vast amount of added inertia while repelling thrown objects back in the direction whence they came. lol

What that dudes name, anyway? Yarrell Poof? Heck his NAME deserves a sin, and the fact that there is a Kaminoan ON the Council, and by Attack of the Clones, NO ONE knows what a Kaminoan is, or that Kamino exists. Queen Amidala is in a different outfit every time we see her, like she's changing it every couple of hours. No reason is given for this in the movie, so the only reason I can think of is that they wanted to show off as many outfits as possible to make little girls want to buy the limited edition Queen Amidala dolls they were selling at the time. [DING]
    I like how Yoda has this tiny little chair in the Jedi Council chamber. It's adorable. [REVERSE DING]
    Wouldn't it have been better to have the Jedi temple be some ancient-looking building covered in moss on top of a mountain, like the classic image of a Shaolin temple or something, instead of just another sterile, grey skyscraper on a planet of sterile, grey skyscrapers? [DING]
    The Jedi Council refuses to allow Anakin to be trained because he's "too old". How young do the Jedi have to be to start their training? You can't make the decision to make the sort of life-long commitment demanded by the Jedi lifestyle when you're five, so how do the Jedi find recruits? Are the Jedi just going around abducting children? [DING]
    Why did Qui-Gon think it would be a good idea to take a nine-year-old kid with him back to Naboo? What kind of an asshole would knowingly bring a child to a war zone? [DING]
    One ship managed to escape the Trade Federation blockade before, so why do they only have one ship in orbit around the planet now? [DING]
    The rich and powerful white people manage to convince the native frog people to act as canon fodder for them. [DING]
    Instead of fighting Darth Maul with lightsabers, Qui-Gon could have just told the two dozen armed men who were standing behind him to start blasting the shit out of him. Maybe they could have even captured him alive and found out who he was working for. [DING]
    Why is Darth Maul even on Naboo now? He was on Tatooine the last time we saw him, and that was when he failed to capture Queen Amidala there. Did Palpatine tell him to go back to Naboo? Why? Is he still trying to capture the Queen after she already made it to Coruscant and told everybody what was happening on Naboo? What would be the point now? [DING]
    What is this humongous room full of glowing pylons doing in the palace, other than to serve as a cool location for a lightsaber fight? [DING]
    Have you noticed that Darth Maul doesn't actually do anything in this movie? I mean, he has no connection to Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan, he barely says anything, and he was sent to capture Queen Amidala by Palpatine, which doesn't make sense because you'd think her making it to Coruscant would play into his plan to use the Naboo crisis to get himself elected Chancellor. The only reason Darth Maul is in this movie is so he can kill Qui-Gon at the end. Really, they could have just had Qui-Gon die by slipping on a banana peel and it wouldn't have made a difference to the plot. [DING]
    How did Anakin manage to accidentally fly his ship into the hangar of the droid control ship? Doesn't the droid control ship have a shield? [DING]
    If the entire droid army is controlled by a signal from a single space ship and they stop working as soon as the signal is interrupted, does that mean the droids will stop working if they go into a tunnel? [DING]
    They burn Qui-Gon's body in full view of everyone. Normally, when they cremate a body, they put it inside a box which is placed into an oven. That way, their loved ones don't have to watch his flesh turn black and disintegrate while his brains sizzle and his intestines burst from the expansion of heated gasses, causing their contents to spill out and fill the room with the smell of burning fecal matter. [DING]
    Why do the holograms in the Star Wars movies look like shit? We have better looking holograms in real life. In this advanced civilization where interstellar travel is an everyday thing, do they not have the technology to make better holograms? [DING]

      How does Quaigan know what kind of gas it is before he smells it, isnt that like a contradiction, if you smell the deadly white gas I guess its a little to late [DING]
      Why dont they leave the door closed and trap them inside the room rather than opening the door [DING]
      Why are they listening to a 14 year old for all their tactical decisions [DING]

      Miscio94 Actually it depends, if the taxes were high enough, then the trade federation could actually be making more money from selling goods because the taxes would make the prices go up. Yes you would be getting rid of the taxes, but I dont think a minor setback in profits would be enough to risk everything, also yes it is obvious that gas is coming in, but he knew the very exact gas, pretty much as soon as it came in he said "dioxidin" What I mean b the 14 year old is padame, padame coordinated the whole battle plan

The more he would need a good director to lead him through this. So, is the kid bad, or just the person that was in charge of him becoming good? For every bad performance he does, hit George Lucas, because he is the one deserving it.
      It is the same thing with the actor of Aang in the Last Airbender, if you watch the 'behind the scenes' you see that this boy is literally Aang himself, the perfect image as long as you doesn't have Shyamalan ruining the kid's performance.

      It's the reason I never watched the movies after three. I couldn't justify all those pages being crammed into 2 hours.

    • @kyuubinaruto17
      @kyuubinaruto17 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you haven't watched them how could you say they're bad, or claim so readily that you KNOW they couldn't do the books justice? When key events aren't going on Harry is just having a 'regular' school life that would be unnecessary for a film. It's interesting as a reader, but as a movie-goer 80% of his daily life would be fluff.
      For example, 4 was just fine. We got the Quiddich world cup scenes(though the actual game isn't shown), introduced to the other schools, brought out the Goblet of Fire, had the three tasks, Voldemort was revived, Harry escaped, and they mourn Diggory's death before going home.
      Same with 5. Dementor attack, Harry nearly getting expelled, the hearing at the ministry, the vision with the snack attacking Mr. Weasley, occlumency, Dumbledore's army training, Umbridge being a total witch, the battle at the department of mysteries, Voldemort vs Dumbledore, and the reveal of the prophecy.
      I have no idea how those could have been stretched into two movies, considering they hit every key scene in both. As I said before, anything else would have been fluff.
      And while your opinion may be different, if 4 and on HAD been in two parts each everyone would just be accusing them of milking the thing for every dime they could get because of ticket prices.
      I can't say there weren't book scenes I wish were in the movies. In HBP I loved Snape's owning Bellatrix by answering all her questions about his loyalty, as well as finding out about Voldemort through all his memories. But there are certain things that are fine on a page, and those that would slow a movie down, even if time wasn't a factor.

    As much as people like to hate on this, it isn't actually a bad movie, best of the prequels by far. It has more practical effects, none of the wooden love story, and an awesome bad guy in a great end battle. It also has some nice vehicle designs and a pod race to boot. Jar Jar was awful no doubt, but there are plenty of saving graces in this movie...

    • @MegaLlamalord

      +bowser515 That's "Revenge of the Sith" my friend! Sure, the practical effects were lessened but, compared to "Phantom Menace", I'm kinda OK w/ that so long as we don't have to see things like that awful Yoda puppet. The 'wooden love story' and the amount of Jar Jar is significantly lessened. Pod Races and Darth Maul are rather awesome but as far as the end battle? No siree: It's a bunch of mindless, choreographed dancing that looks cool but has no real emotional weight

    • @silverblade357

      Julius Rutgers Yeah. I never really understood that whole process. I always assumed the master was at the top with the apprentice being the one the master expected to someday surpass him. The Sith lessons we see all seem to revolve around the apprentice defeating and therefore surpassing the master. The other dark side practitioners are just minions their thrall hoping to become the next apprentice if the master or apprentice perishes.

    The most tragic thing about the prequel trilogy is that this story had sooooooooo much potential. It’s a really cool concept of Anakin turning to the dark side and Palpatine devising a plan to terminate the Jedi all at once and overthrow the republic. If this trilogy were done better it could have been just as good, if not better than the originals. Let’s hope the old republic trilogy redeems Star Wars in 2022

  • @josephhillyard3040

    The plot of this movie should have been about a series of shocking murders of Jedi that were committed by Darth Maul and Anakin was the son of one of the victims. Natalie Portman was one of his childhood friends who took him under her family's wing. The Jedi who are investigating the murders uncover a conspiracy that exposes a member of the galactic government as evil and corrupt. Darth Maul would have gotten away until the next movie where he could be more developed. Anakin could assist in the investigation and discovers his connection to the force and is trained.Then it could have been revealed in the second movie that it was actually the chancellor who was behind it all.
