hey Tom, greetings from Canada. I see you have both striped EVH - both Basswood bodies and both the same pickups. Is there is difference in feel ? or tone ( different body shape? ) A friend of mine, met EVH through his friend Dweezil and did some work for Ed with old Mammoth bootlegs. My friend said he is sure that the 5150 gtr was Basswood and not poplar. So my second question, does this make sense when you play the 5150 EVH gtr, playing live without a net stuff and 5150 tunes.... is the sound inherent or present? I think we all that Franky was an Ash, boogie body, so I am guessing it sounds more 5150-ish that 1984 or Fair Warning or earlier. As Pete thorn's pickup shoot out showed tone shaping is possible within a small degree reminiscent of the different tones esp VH I vs VH II I see you use a Helix, but you have tried the 5150 EVH and or the Franky EVH into a JMP or 12 series marshall? If so what were your impressions in feel/ tone differences between the 2 if any? I am contemplating getting one myself... I love the Franky finish but EVH GEAR won't make them in ASH or Alder ....
You can't play Unchained and be in a bad mood. Same goes with many VH songs. But this one never fails to lift me up as I play and hammer down on that low D. Well done, my friend!
@@TomShreds and @canyonecarver, me too ... and it's the bass, drums, lyrics and rebellious theme and overall spirit and idea of ' breaking free from what holds you back ' of the track that also gets me up too ( DLR voice " I'll have a little celebration and motor grease with that crunch, thank you " )
@@TJ_775 hey mate. I teach Ed’s approach, his shapes, his techniques & and his mindset. Did you watch the video at the top of the page? That explains it all!
I have the EVH 5150 as well. Do you have a hard time keeping it in tune? Mine drives me crazy as it just doesn't like to stay in tune. BTW you shred dude.
Great job here, you definitely have the notes, licks, riffs etc. down and definitely a solid playthrough. If I have to critique anything it would be that its a bit too controlled too perfect. Eddie was more fluid and of course his chops are really hard to emulate. Its also a bit too processed. I don't think I'm sold on the Helix preset. Love the guitar though. Thanks man please keep them coming, its a real pleasure to watch your videos. Maybe try Dirty Movies.
Hey @tomshreds, I just heard your guitar playing on the tapes archive ' making of 1984 ' documentary, and thanks for your perfect playing on that series. PS How do you play with your left-hand fingernails that long? lol
Hey Rob! Cheers for your kind words. Super fun project. Didn’t think the ol’ nails were that long? 😅 usually I’m hopeless if they get too long, but maybe this song is mostly more of a flat posture for the finger tips? Really appreciate your comment and taking the time to check out my channel 🎸🤘😎
Killed it man! I just finally covered this! I hope I did it justice! I'm a sloppy older later beginner lol Was afraid to tackle it for a while. I should have spent more time on it. But it's ok for now! Check it out man! BTW I'm subbed and have been for a while!!

It's so nice to see someone play this and use the flanger ONLY when it supposed to be used. Well Done!!!
Even just hitting the flange right on cue for the low d is impressive
Wait, isn't the flange on for the entire main riff, if not the entire song?
@@robhasenwinkleclicks on and off
@sasgayble When Eddie played Unchained live, who clicked the flanger on and off for the low D pedal tone?
@@robhasenwinklehe didn't really use the flanger for this song when playing live in the early days
Guitar techs do alot of that stuff too. Not sure if eddie ever had a tech operate his effects or not but it's certainly possible.
This might be the best guitar cover I’ve ever seen….so clean, nice!!🤘
Hi Shredders! What EVH song should I cover next? Thinking Mean Street or Hear About It Later. Or even Push Comes to Shove (what a great solo!).
Romeo delight
Hear About it Later, keep giving that flanger a workout 😁.
One of my favorites by VH, maybe even THE all time favorite.
@@shawnhedrick3570 Such a cool breakdown solo too.
I like Aint talking about love but it's perhaps to simple ? Anyhow, great playing!
@@LoffysDomain Good call, definitely keen to cover that one!
Cheers for watching 😁
THE TONE!! OMG, its so cool wow Ive listened to this like 40 times already love it!
Is the B string tuned down a little?
drop d flat tuning
@@antoniomerlo1400the OP asked because his bar chords sound right.
Drop D
@@galihendarmandigi8340 pretty sure he’s asking about the B string. Not the low E
as far i as i know VH did tune down the B string slightly
Hands down, best Unchained cover I’ve seen. So heavy and chalked full of feel and attitude. Great job!
One of the best guitar openings!
Wow Unchained 😮 is powerfull song 😍
Awesome awesome awesome. My newest favourite channel. And aptly named.
Great playing man! 🎸
Comments like this make my day! Thanks so much ☺🙏
So what else is in the signal chain with the Helix & Flange? I see a DS-2.
Only those two in the chain, nothing else :)
Dude, Trigger at the end! Perfect!
That's was incredible 👏!!! Your tone and skills are killer . Love how you showed us utilizing the pedal to.
what a great song and cover. Well done.
TS IS EPIC FATT!!!!!! BEST EDWARD VIDEOS I'VE SEEN SO FAR!!!!
Spot on with the album recording. Very hard to pull off with that EVH flare to it.
Fantastic childhood memories..God
SOUNDS AND LOOKS BADDASS!!!!!!!!!!
Yo!! This ROCKS!! Thank you for this treat!
Awesome cover .. You nailed Eddie's sound on this ! 🤘👍 .. I'm sure he'd be proud.. May he rest in peace 🙏
You have an incredible gift Tom , how many hours would you say you’ve had on the guitar? Precision and you make it look effortless!!!!!!!
What a sound !!! Huge precision in playing and sound. What guitar strings do you use please ? Thx
Amazing Helix preset!!!! I was struggling for so many time to have a decent EVH preset. All EVH sounds in one preset, you rocks 🤘
Happy to help!
Wicked.....!!! Well done....!!! Thanks for sharing, made my day.... 🙂
Amazing cover, I think this song is great but there aren´t to much covers. Good job, bro, I hope you play more of Van Halen
Cheers! More Van Halen you shall have 🤘
I am interested in your shred like Ed course.....it says no Van Halen content or songs.....do we learn some riffs or just certain techniques ?

Such a groove! Wicked playing, Tom 💪🏾💪🏾
Cheers mate 🍻
Fair Warning, always my favourite... rock on Tommy
Great album. I didn't realise Jimmy - might have to whip out a few more covers from this one. Better get woodsheding...
May Eddie be with you Tom! 🤘Let's gooooo that was awesome you even got the flanger timing right

Great playing Tom !! Mean Street is my personal favorite, so...... 😉
Still working on that tricky intro!
dude, that looks like FUN
Phenomenal job sir 😤. The more I listen to Van Halen the more and more I like them.
That was clean.
Amazing. Awesome job!
Nicely done!
The video has an effect similar to that of the invisible man. Once again, the performance speaks for itself. Incredible!
Hey Tom! Great playing…….again 🎸👍
Thank you Paul.....again 😆 😎
wow.... flawless
Perfect Eddie execution. Holy Shiiieettt!!!
TomShreds.... absolutely!!!
Best cover I've seen of this song. Fantastic. Does your preset work on PodGO?
Hi David! Thanks for the kind words mate. Sadly I don’t believe the helix presets work on any non helix device!
Tom, did you record straight to your DAW via usb or did you mic cabs?
Straight in Stuart, and use Helix Native to tweak the tones in post. So freeing and flexible.
Thanks, good to know. Which Helix unit did you use?
@@TomShreds
Nice! I thought you might even play the clean phantom chord like on the very end of the recorded version
You're right, I should have! Darn it. Better get the camera out and redo the lot 🤣

Yavsteelin my riffs boy!!
Lol
But you'd definitely get the nod!
Cant believe it's almost 4 years he's been gone!!
Bro what kind of picks do you use?
For the EVH stuff, just a standard .60, branded by my local store (Modern Musician).
Tom definitely Shreds. :)
Awesome dude !!
Do you have your flanger wired into the front of amp or into the loop?
Front, as EVH did 😎

Why can't anyone ever get the flanger right on this song?
Screen name checks out
Awesome
Sei uno spettacolo
Well done, Tom!!!!!!!!!
Nailed it. 👍
Just a thought, because i think you could pull it off well. Van Halen plays LaGrange...
Good idea! If you take any of those iconic EVH shuffles, and slow them to 50%, they often sound just like LaGrange.
Remember me Tom when you get hella famous 🤟 😀
Quite impressive
Fkn awesome
Holy shit Batman 🦇 best cover hands down
I miss you Eddie
