Mike, I just got done preg checking my 60 cows this week as well. I appreciate, and understand the “damnit” when a cow you love turns up open. TH-cam always likes to keep life interesting by the variety of suggested videos that’s unrelated to all the stuff one normally watches. I’ve lived on farms off & on for over half my life. I was only around cows as a kid and spent my extra time with my horses (not a working farm persay) anyway, I enjoyed your video and seeing your cows & set up.
Hello from South East Texas! We are almost ready for our first two cows on our homestead. I would love to see you provide some more insight to the ultrasound. It's hard to tell what I am looking at. Love the videos and I have learned a lot from watching them the past few months.
Things have changed so much since I was a kid on my grandfathers ranch in South Dakota. As usual, fantastic production and narration. Very enjoyable. Hoping all comes out well. Thank you for the ride.
we just hauled 4 calves to another farm this morning and it is amazing how unsafe calves can be. As you know, they don't like to be alone. They get scared in a new environment. Well, we got 3 loaded and the 4th was in the barn. so we locked the 3 in the stock trailer in the front and left the back open to load this 4th. That kind of left #4 alone and scared and he couldn't see the others and he turned on us to charge us when he got cornered. we finally had to open the front of the stock trailer to let him have full view of his buddies and then he loaded peacefully. glad you tell us all about safety. unexpected things can happen and if you don't have experience to read a cows temperament or intentions, it can be dangerous.
I'll be there next year!! Everyone did a great job. Great getting help from new folks and the ones you know. It would be a daunting task for just the 2 of you!
I really enjoyed viewing this review of your preg check and thinking on your feet. Took me back to my cattle farming days back in the 80's. During that time I spent $5 to learn how to AI at MS State University. I was please to get a 85% first time set. That $5 was the best money I spent in my farming life. I only had about 30 head so it was easier than your setup. Again thanks for taking me back to those days. South MS farmer.
Great video Mike👍🏻 Hate to see Blonde cow go but that’s farm life I guess. I wasn’t sure if I saw Bambi too. Best wishes for a blessed holiday season and prosperous new year. PS- I’m a small cattle farmer compared to your operation but I still love it. 😊
Hello Mike that was a good livestream I watch a great part of it and thought y'all did a great job and only 16 not pregnant that's a pretty good odds great video keep up the good work you and Erin both
That looks it's a awesome tool, I wish us farmers here in MI has a tool like that. Yeah sometimes it stinks of having a cow that isn't pregnant, we get that sometimes sure it p,o us off, but we just look at it as if she's a good / protected mother, then we give her a second chance. So I understand what you mean Mike by keeping a cow that's not pregnant, is wasting feed and money, but sometimes you should also look at the expect of you really want to let her go just because she's not pregnant or give her one more chance now if you have one too protected where if you got hit form her, as in charge which if she knows who you are, then you get rid of her. But inerways good video of that:)
Hi again MIKE! A big yay for Arrowquip and their chute system! Once things got going all seemed to flow really well. Another big project behind you. Will you be keeping the chute and the two favorites Bambi and Blondcow? You've been making some great changes Mike. Hope now Thanksgiving week will be a bit calmer for you. Stay safe out there!!
Howdy C C, I agree with ya about the Aeroquip system and once we got rolling a rhythm was established we were like a well oiled machine! Bambi isnt going anywhere and Blonde cows fate hasnt been decided yet. Thanks C C. -Mike
I'm in a small dairy but lost a cow yesterday to cancer. Been doing the same thing this fall. Whoever is not producing and not pregnant goes to the packing plant. Can by a dairy cow back right now for Bout the same price. And for once in seems like ever the milk price is up. Been a terrible wet year. Lost hay to rain and didnt get corn silage until the ground froze. It is what it is. Hang on there will make it
Mike... Hello again... Can you check the herd records to see it there is a bull assigned to those 18 cows, that may be suspiciously high in open cows.. Maybe "Frosty" had 10 open cows, and the others had 1 or 2...? It may be a specific bull begging to find a new home??
That was a nice one! Scary to see those cows turn around and head out like that! Great to show the fix, too. Sad to see Blonde Cow open. Nice work, Mike.
Mike you should put up cows for "adoption" for a year for a predetermined cost. Like zoos do with there animals. I haven't figured out the specifics but this would help offset the cost of keeping at least some of the cows on the ranch because the contract is only a year it would allow you to sell cows or do what ever you need to do with them at the end of that time period.
Hey Mike Tell your Temp Ranch Hand I was an OCFD FireFighter and I lived in Pedley, across the street from the Norco Police Chief (RCSO). Ask him if he knows Capt Richard Ventura.
Ok so 16 cows out of 150. My thoughts go to why? Is it because there age, Cystic or just not cleaning well after calving? Maybe a dirty bull, length of time with bull? I understand you wish to cull heavy an you'll still want to keep back replacement heifers but for me l'd need to know why 10% open cows for the future of the Program.
The average open rate is 9% in cows and 14.5% in heifers. The average conception rate is 89% on cows and 87% on heifers. We didn't preg check last year so this is pretty good. Cows get older. Thanks for watching - Mike
@@OurWyomingLife l don't need to know the answer or see the stats. My point was more based on you wanting to know why because that is the way l think. As l was told once by my Grandfather(40 years ago) if you want to grow and be successful treat every cow like its the only one you got.
My view is of a cow not pregnant is not earning ores keep and send them out. Pick a calf to replace her and to eat her hay. I see it as running at 100 percent capacity. Of course knowing your about ten percent short in pregnancy test. You plan to replace then ahead of time. At the same time it is replacing the heard which one would do anyway.
@@charleydan Ofcourse that's an aspect for culling cows, old, bad legs and feet, bad udder. But open cows and understanding why there open is just as much of culling as physical appearance. Then of course there is the feed to cow ratio. So l can understand Mike, he has to cull anyways so open goes first. Then if needed he can chisel them down further. I think everyone culls the same in Beef. Ratio might change in type of cull but yes you always need a certain amount of replacements.

The cow's that you love, do you give them a 2nd chance to produce if their found to be not pregnant? It couldn't be that many right? Artificial insemination would fix the problem if it weren't a biological problem.
The main problem would be the cost. The sale of the calves is how they pay for the ranch's expenses, so if a cow is open and they kept her, that'd be a year's worth of expenses into that cow with no return. I think he explains this in one of his older video's
Also artificial insemination can be a lot of work and take up a lot of your time and is very hands on. It's usually not worth the time and cost if it's a small number of cows and you've got a larger operation to run.
