My in-law uncle uses a simple notebook. He is in his mid-seventies and he does what he can. I think many ranchers are in the same category as my uncle is.
Mike, great information, I have a green notebook for my small herd, but my Grandpa had his checkbook cover in his pocket, just like Guilbert. God Bless the old ranchers and farmers.
Thanks, Mike for your insights and information concerning recordkeeping down to the individual cow. Very impressive and requires a commitment to daily data gathering and entry. Very informative. Much appreciated. - Dean from Minnesota
Very informative! I wonder how many ranchers are following your business model, Mike. If you don't keep records, it is impossible to forecast your future.
I like the little bio on the Cow you gave at the beginning of the video. Lets us get closer with them, and root for them to give birth and bring in the dough! Keep it up!
Mike love the way you dig in and find what each caw cost per year. You are learning more and more all the time. Iwish you and family the best this new year. Happy Thanksgiving
Suggestion: do a video on the process of selling cattle at the auction mart. Years ago, I took my "city raised" children to an auction mart. To my surprise, they were thoroughly fascinated by it.
Mike, I like the way you have opened up in front of the camera. You are sharing a lot of information about your ranch, the good and bad. Bless you, Gilbert is smiling down on your effort. Yes, it is worth doing.
I remember my Uncle had a note book and that kept all his information on his cows. My mothers cousin had files on sheets of paper for his cows and when his son took over he put in a notebook and when he got done with his cows and sold them all he told us that he threw them away. Thank you for the video
I created my own record keeping program using Microsoft Access. I can generate all kinds of production reports on any of our animals. Although the number of animal is quite small compared to you. I think your program is more detailed on the cost of each animal, pasture usage, etc. I like the fact that you can take your tablet or Ipad with you into the field. Your right record keeping is extremely important. Great video.
Mike, great video showing the business side of ranching! Even though I am young I still keep some of my records on paper and some online! I keep track of AI dates and pasture exposure dates in a notebook. I keep my semen tank inventory on an Excel spreadsheet, and my inventory on both paper and online. Since I have a registered herd I keep records via the American Simmental Association and American Angus Association websites. Happy Thanksgiving!
Y'all feel good about getting Blonde Cow, don't ya!?! I think every sub is glad ya did. Just watched the winter WX potential. Looks like definitely Arctic Air coming down. Moisture could be hit n miss with El Niño in neutral, and a warm area of Pacific ocean to the NW. So y'all planned well to keep a hay buffer in place. Well, I've turned in another Word Fit. Y'all stay warm, stay safe and have a wonderful Thanxgiving!
Hey Mike. Another great video!! So sorry I haven’t been around much - raising 3 little boys at 68 is harder than it was back when I was 38...!!! Your info is so valuable to know - even to us city folks!! Thanks for sharing. Wishing you and Erin and Rita and the kids a blessed and fun Thanksgiving Holiday... :))
Finally…. A Rancher/Farmer that illustrates how to figure expenses/profit. Many years I have been doing this and my spread sheet equals 2 + 2 = 3. The last two years I have been negotiating with a corporation to rent my operation from me for revenue I haven’t seen in ten years. How can they make a profit and I can’t…maybe their accountant can’t read a spread sheet or my 2600 acres will fit in their 15000 acres more proficiently. If it works out, next year at this time I will be setting in a warm coffee shop early morning sipping coffee talking about the old (bad) days. Who will be listening to me (?) probably no one; but I’ll be setting in a warm coffee shop not worried about how to pay my debts….
Yup Alzheimer's got me, got some good people helping me thru by the Grace of God. Records need to make some kind of sense to someone that picks/opens it up. Ty Mike
I don't remember my godfather keeping records, but he certainly did for everything to do with building their new home. Very interesting info. You're bringing your ranch into the 21centuary and doing it smarter. It's exciting to watch.
Hi again MIKE! Thank goodness for that technology and once again for your passed experience to help get you organized! Gilbert you speak of did what the old timers did back then. Now you have something that works for you for these times on the ranch. I say thank the Lord for that! At least now it's organized chaos Mike lol lol! I can imagine this vid to be of great help to many. Once again good job and way to go! Little did you know you'd become an advisor a teacher a game changer but that's what you do these days. Hope you can enjoy a bit of down time now. Keep warm out there and Happy Thanksgiving to you all...
That’s why big data is a big business. It’s pretty simple to write such application to do what you need to do. That’s my previous life as a software engineer speaking.
So interesting and educational, thank you.I never fail to view any of your videos and not come away more interested for the next video.I am expanding my ranching knowledge and I certainly appreciate cattle more each week.May your family have a warm and enjoyable Thanksgiving. :)
Google sheets! Shareable to everyone’s smart phone by setting up collaboration, fully customizable, works offline, accessible by app or on the computer and it’s completely free. I don’t have a calving book anymore, it’s all entered on my phone and always with me. All our pasture and hay field records are on there too.
Can you use a Gallagher system with cattle like they do sheep? You just zap ear tags for every thing you record and it plugs right into a spread sheet and it puts it all together for you.
Enjoy your video Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family just saw on the news the cattle farm here just lost 80 cows to rustlers. Still Oklahoma in the Wild West..
Hi Mike and Erin Wondering and maybe missed the date and time for the ranch to table dinner. The last i heard you were thinking sometime around the first week of August ? And most of all Happy Thanks Giving . Hope this winter works out better than last.
Hi Mike, i hope you watched that link i sent you in your birthday video. You are on the right track with record keeping but you can go further, we use a similar system to Cattle Max that you can track and check the herd health from an app on your phone.
I couldn't watch the whole video last pm. Was called away by something silly like pumpkin pie. But anyway I had no idea it was possible to make an interesting ranch video about book keeping but you pulled it off. Well done
That's can be call your animal plan . Just like a lesson plan. It will. You will more of what you got to do on the ranch and wilh those Amazing Animals ,also Your wife will know when planted the seeds I the garden. Way to go Mike.
Thanks Mike, Giving us City Slickers a wealth of information about producing Beef is to have a better understanding public across American. keep up the great work, an informed America is a Happy America. Except what our Military is doing, what America doesn't know doesn't upset them, as long as we have good leaders in Washington we trust.
It's really good information but what happens when the servers go down or a computer crashes. I like the paper records for backup. The way you did it with the irm.
Very informative, thanks Mike. I was puzzled when Erin said cut their tags if they're empty. I thought when sending a cow to auction or sold to another ranch, including her records should make her worth more? When you buy bred cows... or any new cow to the ranch, do they come with records? -EZ
Good questions. When we buy cows we get pretty good records. At least birthdays and shot records. When we sell they really don’t want birthday however we do let them know of their health history. Thanks -Mike
Have 2 sets that means 4 books a year 2 angus books and 2 ncba books a card file and Microsoft XL and also aims ! Would love to just keep track of one little red book a year
Your acting skills are off the cuff! Also, writing the script...if you are winging this, come on bro, you got some real smarts!! I will call you Hollywood Cowboy! Might make the wife realize she got a real catch! lol
Mike, how much snow did you get up there? Currently waiting for the road to open down here in Cheyenne.. Hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving
All channels will be affected. However we don’t actively market toward those under the age of 13. We will just have to declare our channel as for that audience. Thanks -Mike
Gives a more clear meaning to the phrase "Food for thought" when you start adding bios and stats to them. Each will have their own unique story during their stay on your ranch.
I love cattlemax. I use it on my iPhone and have a short cut on my home screen so it works just like an app. As far as records go. I’ve always heard you can’t manage what you don’t measure.
Hey Mike just wanted to ask you about how you keep records of which bull sired which calf because I have a small herd and it's easy for me because I only have 1 bull. I'm wanting to expand but I want to understand how I will be able to tell which bull is getting the job done for me in the future
I always get a little chuckle when tech tries to reinvent the wheel when the old timers do the same thing with pencil, paper and a mind better than any computer invented.
Be careful what you wish for. In the Uk the government/eu produces tags and every bovine has its own passport. Every birth has to be reported to the government in 21 days. They are traceable from birth to death online. If a cow loses a tag it has to be replaced within two weeks. Periodically cow tags are inspected. You can be fined if they have one missing. If they have both missing they can slaughter the cow on farm and have it taken away for incineration. Maximum penalty for tampering with tags is 2 years. You also get a couple of records inspections every year where they try to catch you out. 1980s you just had a notebook and tagging was optional. Partly this is a means to stop imports from outside the eu where cattle are not traceable
I’m glad you kept Blonde on the ranch even if she is empty this year, she should not be empty next year.
Yeeeeeeeh heeeeee
My in-law uncle uses a simple notebook. He is in his mid-seventies and he does what he can. I think many ranchers are in the same category as my uncle is.
I enjoy hearing about the business aspect of running a ranch.
Thank you very much - Mike

Excellent! It going to be a Big Snow this weekend for OWL and here in Summerset too. I enjoy your videos. Thanx!

As always interesting. My father wasn't much of a file keeper so he always let me do that kind of stuff until we sold the last of our cows and sheep.

Very informative, thank your for the look into what it takes, and how ranching is a business and not pets.
Great video Mike! Thank you for all are you doing for the beef industry!
Thank you as well Andrew. Thanks also for being a supporter! -Mike
This is awesome! Very informative videos. I want to get the hell out of my office and be out in a ranch such as this.
My uncle used a spiral flip notebook, pocket size. Kept in the chest pocket of his bib overalls. Damn good business man, he was.
I don't remember my godfather keeping records, but he certainly did for everything to do with building their new home. Very interesting info. You're bringing your ranch into the 21centuary and doing it smarter. It's exciting to watch.
Hi, I wanna say Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and have a great time. thanks for sharing

Hi Mike, i hope you watched that link i sent you in your birthday video. You are on the right track with record keeping but you can go further, we use a similar system to Cattle Max that you can track and check the herd health from an app on your phone.
When it comes down to it, It's always about the numbers.
Yep now have to pay per month just to keep track of ur cows. ..crazy
Don’t have to do it lol
I couldn't watch the whole video last pm. Was called away by something silly like pumpkin pie. But anyway I had no idea it was possible to make an interesting ranch video about book keeping but you pulled it off. Well done

🙏🏽
How much snow are you expecting or getting Mike. We got 9 inches of snow last night and 3 more storms to go by Sunday or Monday !
Weather storm warning shows 20 inches on the way :)
Did you get anything yesterday Mike ?
Great video.
I’d like to know more about your flatbed pickup
Bravo!
Great information, thank.
That fade to color effect was cool.
I agree with cattle max, good program but they need a app.

Sounds like you need cattlemax, thanks - Mike
Glad you kept Blondie. I'm sure she'll generate revenue her own way and justify your keeping her.
Your acting skills are off the cuff! Also, writing the script...if you are winging this, come on bro, you got some real smarts!! I will call you Hollywood Cowboy! Might make the wife realize she got a real catch! lol
Great video Mike!
Mike, how much snow did you get up there?
Currently waiting for the road to open down here in Cheyenne..
Hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving
Not much yet, maybe an inch Thanks - Mike
My uncle carries a small cow notebook where ever he goes. He is in his 80s
You should look into Z tags they are a one piece tag no buttons
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
A question: will your channel be affected by COPPA on January 1?
All channels will be affected. However we don’t actively market toward those under the age of 13. We will just have to declare our channel as for that audience. Thanks -Mike
Happy Thanksgiving Mike and family!
JO JO IN VT 💕 😊
enjoyed the video...thank you
You should consider getting a jalor feedwagon
Mike I think you might be a genius.
Gives a more clear meaning to the phrase "Food for thought" when you start adding bios and stats to them. Each will have their own unique story during their stay on your ranch.
Nice video idea. I like spreadsheets :)
seems like that program should have an offline mode that will accept inputs in the field and then sync/upload them when you get home/internet
I love cattlemax. I use it on my iPhone and have a short cut on my home screen so it works just like an app. As far as records go. I’ve always heard you can’t manage what you don’t measure.
That cow sure looks happy! Are you sure you're just growing Alfalfa???😁
thanks FYI
Hey Mike just wanted to ask you about how you keep records of which bull sired which calf because I have a small herd and it's easy for me because I only have 1 bull. I'm wanting to expand but I want to understand how I will be able to tell which bull is getting the job done for me in the future
