As a machinist I have to say he’s doing the hemp wrong. You need to roughen up the thread that the hemp holds better. In the scratches it gets a good grip. You can do it with a file or sawblade. Many fittings even have already little grooves in it for that case. Hemp is more mess but will expand in contact with water and make the connection even tighter and better. You can even turn back a little with hemp without getting a leak. Ptfe is cleaner but you can’t turn back. Hemp is still a great material and superior in some cases, even if its used less today. Please show it right when it’s a tutorial, or knowledge gets lost.

Thanks for the explanation. When would you use one over the other?

@@Prokudak I would use hemp for things I still need to adjust like water taps. It’s easier to get the direction right. I mostly use ptfe sealing thread or tape for all installations. Hemp I use less because it’s more work, but it’s the longer lasting way.

What is this grease he is using??

@@littlereptilian7580 I don’t know, I’ve never seen it before. Here in Germany we use ,,Fermit‘‘. It’s a grey sealing paste which you put on the hemp. It makes the hemp swell when it’s threaded in and ensure a tight connection which is still adjustable unlike teflon.

You are in general right but is not wrong but with slightly rough edges will be better. Some valves already have fabricated nails on thread

As a plumber i can say both of your tutorials here a wrong. Threads should all be scratched up to grip the sealing material in this case hemp and ptfe. The hemp is too thin and needs to start from the first thread, yes maybe it didnt leak but i doubt it. I only use ptfe tape on threads where one or both of the fittings is plastic, or gas. I use hemp or loctite thread sealing cord on anything metal but hemp is the better option. I apply ptfe starting from the back of the thread and work towards the front. The ammount of wraps depends on the pipesize but i make sure to taper it towards the start of the thread

Interesting video. I am 67 years old, my father was a plumber. I will probably be bombarded with ecologists etc. on this page, but my father always put enamel paint on the threads before applying hemp, and then covered the hemp with enamel paint again before joining the pipes. You know what? the pipes never leaked and no one ever died of cancer etc. My ex neighbour from 25 years ago ( a plumber) saw me threading a pipe with that plastic crap, jumped over the fence and gave me some hemp. told me he would kick my nuts in if he ever saw me using that plastic crap again. I'm using hemp ever since and I'm proud of it.
Do it the right way and it lasts for ever!!!!!!!

Canapa a vita su tubi in ferro zincato o altro.
Teflon su raccordi in PVC , ottone e altri raccordi con filettatura precisa.

What's the point using teflon tape -- if it is going just rumple-up, break and cannot stop leaks? Plumbers black silicone or pvc (don't know which anymore) tape ---works far more...

If tow is used for plumbing connections, it should not be greased, but left to dry!! If the wader finds a hole, the tow will soak up the water and seal it by itself.

Паклю лучше промазать казанским автогерметиком, импортные для этого подходят хуже - это 100% герметичность и никаких проблем в дальнейшем при необходимости откручивания.

No reason to run tape all the way down the treads, it’s not like you are going to bury every thread when you tighten this nipple and if you do you’ll probably pop your fitting. Also super sloppy tape application, it should be uniformly and kept tight.
