    Some commenters refer to the fact that garden hose connectors use gaskets to create a watertight seal. If I understand correctly, this is because garden hose connectors use a so-called "STRAIGHT thread-form" as opposed to the "TAPERED thread-form" found on iron pipes, etc. The latter provides "pretty good" sealing using the threads alone whereas the former does not.
    However (again - as I understand), the "pretty good" seal achieved with tapered threads is imperfect - requiring tape or putty in most applications.
    So please correct me if I'm mistaken. And thanks so much for your videos!

    So, for some reason I couldn't find an answer to my question on google (quickly) but this video answered it at the end. My question was "should I put teflon tape on all fittings?" Your answer basically was "avoid if it's going to involved another seal" which makes sense because that's the point of the teflon tape. Thank you!

      @fatboyrowing 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sirshammalot another way to look at it: Use Teflon tape on tapered (pipe) threads. If it seals on the threads use Teflon tape. If it seals on something else, don’t.

    ‘Liked’ your video, that’s precisely what I’ve been doing installing this water heater. Even tried without Teflon tape cause the inlet looks like it got a plastic seal,... no luck, still the same slow leak, and my threads are true. If this attempt doesn’t work,... I’m taking it back for a replacement cause the inlet must be defective. No trouble with the outlet side, which I connected all the same on the first try. I’ll be a bit PO’d if I gotta drain this and drive it nearly an hour into town for a replacement.

  • @PaulCotterCanada
    @PaulCotterCanada 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    In my 'jurisdiction' white tape (which is single density) cannot be used for steel water pipes. It needs to be triple density, which is usually red/orange/pink depending on your colour perception - or if you are an interior decorator. Double density is yellow which is the minimum for gas. You can always use a higher density if you wish. Just so people know, black iron / galvanized pipes cannot be used for drinking water. At least not here - Toronto. And finally, the color of the tape is just a dye so inspectors know you have used a sufficiently dense tape. There is no difference in the material, which is PTFE. Teflon is a Du Pont trade name.
    There is also Green (Medical) and Silver (stainless steel) which are chemically different. Typically, the people watching TH-cam probably will never need those.
    The clockwise-end-on is good advice. I never thought of it that way.

      @salemnights8236 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard of these high density tapes, but never seen them anywhere. With larger pipe sizes we just hemp and stag to be honest. It works way better than the light density ptfe that seems to be everywhere.

    Good video, but I would add that you should not use teflon tape on plastic to plastic. Use a thread sealer specifically for PVC. Some guys who have beeen doing this a long time will use tape, but they probably know how to avoid overtightening or they wouldn't still be doing it.

  • @tfriedmann5908

    Beyond the basic direction to wrap tape in the direction the nut (or fixture) will be threaded, a hidden EXTRA tip here is that you wrap BACK to FRONT (IOW, starting on smooth pipe side, and ending at the thread side). I've seen this done by some plumbers, though it is not talked about much. Can you talk about why that is a superior method?

    • @KalOrtPor
      @KalOrtPor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For the same reason wrapping clockwise keeps the tape from being unraveled by moving in the direction the pipe turns, wrapping from inside to end feathers the layers of tape seams back as the pipe moves further into the threads and avoids the bottoms of tape loops being pulled up. Think of the tape layers as dominoes resting on each other and you want to go with the grain. It also helps have the cut end of the tape engaging with the threads right away without a chance to slip.......Much less of an issue than wrapping counterclockwise, but still worth keeping in mind.

    Really tightly is not a proper measure of Tightness. Fittings can stretch(deform) and Cast can crack...
    I'm 70yrs old and weigh 123lbs., yet tightening my replacement splitter valve, I noticed a slight drip on one fitting after about 30 minutes use. (*thinking*) I hadn't tightened it enough, I removes the fitted line and gave the 90* fitting 1 more full turn. Yep,, I split the Valve housing and created a high pressure flood.
    *Actually it is likely I had slightly cracked the housing on the initial setup causing the minor drip.
    Be wise - Check the recommendations for various fitting types and sizes. Hand Tight plus (X) turns.

      Plumbing threads are designed with a slack. 1/2 inch accepts 20 layers, 1.5" may go as far as 40-50 layers of teflon tape. It's the precision plastic threads (e. g. a manometer on a foot pump) where 2-3 threads are added for a good-as-new seal and a bit of lubrication.

    I know plumbers that still wrap even when there’s an O-ring gasket. It’s something they have been doing for 30+ years and do it to everything regardless of there being an O-ring

    • @KalOrtPor
      @KalOrtPor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's fine to wrap those as long as the tape is kept back a few threads from the end so as to not interfere with the mating surface between the gasket and end of fitting. It's more of a secondary, belt-and-suspenders level of protection, but all the leakproofing should be coming from the gasket.

  • @kadalora

    You said when you put it on the wrong way (0:57), "..once I start to thread this nipple (assume you meant cap) on, this also goes in the same direction that I put the tape on.." however that's incorrect, you are putting the cap on clockwise, but you had put the tape on anti-clockwise!! And that of course is the problem. The tape needs to go on as you correctly showed after that (1:27), goes on clockwise as does the cap, which stops the tape bunching up

    If you read.all teflon it requires atleast 3 ooverlapping layers of tape.to.cover each thread. Typically will do 4 to 5 wraps over lapped keeping the first thread or 2 then touch it with dope all the way around from.the second thread till just a smidge before the teflon stops if it's runny as he'll cause it's hot out. Or humid etc I will sometimes hit the in side of the female connection at the first or second thread with a dab of the pipe dope

    He starts off putting it on the wring way and says “this also goes in the same direction i put the tape on” but it’s confusing because he goes anti-clockwise with the tape and clockwise with the cap. He must mean if the cap were still then you would turn the pipe ani-clockwise- but he doesn’t actually say that. I think the presentation is very poor- first he does not make it clear which direction - then he does not talk about the tension or how to handle the tape- nor why only 2-3 turns. Sad it comes up first.

    They actually have yellow teflon tape that is specifically for gas fittings though I never had problems using white teflon tape on gas fittings.

    I’ve seen guys roll up the tape turning it into a string almost, and following these same instructions with that “string.” Any arguments for or against?

    Do you recommend teflon tape on the threads of NG or propane flare fittings? What about on non-tapered threads like BSPP?

    1:00. No it goes in the opposite direction. That’s why it’s unwinding and bunching up the tape

    So you apply the tape to the same direction the pipe is sealed.
    But how does that differ from if you applied the tape in the direction it is loosened?
    Isn't it just the same either way since it adheres to the surface anyway.(i.e. it doesn't change the surface and just adds thickness)

  • @Meleecow

    This is so confusing. You put the tape on counterclockwise but then turned the nipple clockwise? Thats not the same direction.

    Damn, did F up the dialog/explanation. (1) Apply the tape clockwise to the direction, um, er...with the pipe facing you. (2) after showing how not do put the tape on, i.e. counterclockwise. You say,, "once I start to thread the nipple on, you can see it goes in the same direction as I put the tape on. Well, you put the tape on counterclockwise and the nipple was put on clockwise. So, wrong/inaccurate again. I agree the tape was sliding clockwise, but you put it on counterclockwise and so your description was inaccurate.... again.

      it'd be difficult to show you him applying the tape if he had the end he was taping towards him. Imagine you were doing the taping instead--the end is facing towards you. in general, it looks like you want the end you want to tape towards you and go clockwise. if it's away from you, go counter-clockwise.

    You don’t need to wrap the Teflon further down the pipe. The cap doesn’t thread down that far

    Is it always clockwise to the direction facing you even if you have to turn the pipe around in order to put it into the wall? I am sorry for the stupid question, I just never did this before.
