  • How to Hemp & Paste a Joint, Old School Plumbing.
If you ever have a problem with a connection & you don't want it to leak, go old school with the hemp & paste. I did this for 2 years in college up to 4" iron when I was 16 on an industrial pipe fitting & welding course.
Ideally for iron pipework but goes equally well on brass.
Btw, I thought I'd try commentating on this one & spare you the music, let me know which you prefer & please comment, I like to hear your ideas on the subject.

I do industrial plumbing heating and sprinkler systems. There is nothing wrong with what you are doing. I have learned down through the years that there is more than one way to do a particular job. you can score the pipe thread anyway you want. the end result is to make sure the hemp stays in place, You took the time and effort to post a video so well done you.

The problem i have with hemp is i can never fix say a fosset or an angle valve in the right position (90 degree). Im always lacking half a turn or quarter turn or so. If i put it in the right position, it is not tight enough and i cannot do one more turn. Any tips on how to handle this ?

You’d get the same problem with PTFE tape, I just wind more on.

First you scrape with the blade, not sawing movement. Than you put the hemp on, and than you can put the pasta, but we use many times only spit. I have done this kind of work more than 50 years so I know what i'm talking about.

Oh I’ve only been doing it 37 so you must be right, maybe you should post some videos and we can all bask in your wisdom

Yup, @HarryDengoede do a quick and better video, if you're able. I'm sure you can do better by keeping the camera on the actual work, but you've already let yourself down and worsened TH-cam with your hostile comment. Make amends by adding to, not detracting from, the sum of knowledge. I'm here for the learning; why were you watching this?
