    The process from start to finish was fascinating. Lots of creative "modern" ideas combined with traditional methods were surprising to see - thanks for this.

    Who's the the schmuck that dislikes this? Fantastic video Rowan! Great videography, narration, and topic! Guess what's being added to the shop to-make list?

    Strange how the second video has more views than the first! Awesome video as always Rowan, you're one of the best.

    Great vid as always. Really nice acorn, cool using the drill press. Lathed my last one but going to try your method. Thanks for yet another well made and factual vid keep them coming.

      Thanks very much, Mark :) If I had a lathe (it's on my purchase list but I have kit I need to prioritise ahead of it) I would use that instead - I think I would get a faster result + I could do larger and more complex shapes, but the pillar drill is a good stand-in until I can afford the lathe.

    Kasenite, is basicly "Sodium Ferrocyanide" which is a technical and food grade chemical that can be bough from a pharmacy or a chemical supplier.. One of its common uses is to stop road salt from caking up. =)

      +RowanTaylor 2 scheduled for next two Sunday's, one on the cutting table and one in the trash, most footage I've had from one event so should have some decent video out of it, or I think so at least ;) also toms vids are coming too from the vanguards :D

    • @RowanTaylor
      @RowanTaylor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brilliant! I'll look forwards to today's for starters. I enjoyed Tom and Mike's last couple of vids. Tom's last vid I was on the edge of my seat with adrenaline pumping as though I was stalking with you guys, lol. With my vids I shoot for the edit so I only film what I need and don't give myself extra footage to sift through apart from a bit of B roll for time transitions. Not so easy to do for paintballing because you never know when you're going to get a contact during a big game lol.

    • @Aartwood
      @Aartwood 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +RowanTaylor yeah that's the difficult thing about paintball filming, as it's basically a byproduct of a weekends play. I can't stand staged paintball vids either as I'd rather watch an actual action film, but real gameplay does get you straight into being there along side the player. My version of toms tense video isn't till next Sunday, but we are both releasing a video today, mine with my selfie stick gameplay and his new shenanigans video, so good day to be s baller ;)

    • @RowanTaylor
      @RowanTaylor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could almost do with planting cameras around the place before the start of the game for paintball - but Jeez that would be a pain!. Just seen Tom's vid, lol. Waiting yours eagerly!

    These dies maybe a little too small for this to work but for larger dies at least I've found that softening the sharp corners with an angle grinder wire wheel whilst the the dies are at a orangey/red works really well.

    Hi Rowan,
    Great stuff, I wonder if the same thing can be done with copper?

    • @RowanTaylor
      @RowanTaylor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate :) You mean the swaging or using the pillar drill as a turning tool? Copper can probably be swaged quite easily as it is a lovely soft material. The only thing I would worry about would be the galling.

      I mean the video in general was nice. Would it not make more sense to make the acorns from something that doesn’t take so much energy?

    I dont know the exact penetration rates, but i tend to get it to a nice yeller heat, then chuck a bunch of case hardening powder in and take it back to the fire and hold it at a red-orange heat for a few minutes, brush the case hardening residue out and pop more fresh powder in. I repeat this so i have applied 3 lots of case hardening to it (Or four if its gonna have a hard life lol) then after the final soak in heat i drop it in the bosch like you do.
    I think i remember something about the crack you hear when quenching it being indicative of something, but i dunno what now hahaha. I think the louder the crack the better the harden or something. how or why i don't know!

    • @RowanTaylor
      @RowanTaylor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I remember something like that. I did give it two coats but forgot to mention it in the video lol. It certainly pop-pop-popped when it was hardening. I did it above critical for 30 minutes altogether, with a second coat of compound after 15 minutes. WIth a bit more powder I would have renewed it every 5 - 10 minutes . Where do you get your powder from? I think we had a discussion about this a few weeks ago...

      +RowanTaylor I dunno, the boss gets it by the kilo or 5kilo bag. Probably from fleabay.

      Rowan In the US there is a company that sells a case hardening compound called Cherry Red. www.rosemill.com I am not Shure where you would buy it where you are maybe you could order it off the internet.

      I've heard about this cherry red stuff but not from any smiths, only engineer hobbyists who don't really have much use for it, is it any good?
      it would be good to know because, as rowan said, it's not so easy to get casenit over here at the minute.

    You are FAR better (More control) using sand paper-wet n dry is best. use spare belts and tare strips then hold in tension behind the work piece. You will have a nice concentric piece which will not require files. The grinder is much more apt for tool steel. Great video, as before I do enjoy your turn of phrase, its getting a bit blackadder in spots now!

      Thanks for the tip - I will give it a go for other shapes. I've had to tone down my turn of phrase quite a lot as I've managed to offend a few people over the last 9 months, lol, but I see where you're coming from, lol.

    question. for those of us watching you from America....would you mind talkimg both in metric AND standard?? thank you ....Skal!

    • @Spidey7i
      @Spidey7i 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What is standard? You mean imperial? Just google a unit conversion dude. I'm sure this guy is probably using metric because it tends to be a more widely used standard within engineering and related fields than imperial, not to make things more difficult for Americans. Believe me, I would know, being an American living in the UK and working within engineering for 11 years.

    I am not associated with the following link, I just wanted to give you folks a place to find material to case harden mild steel. I cannot vouch for this product. www.midwayusa.com/product/119479/cherry-red-surface-hardening-compound-1-lb. Hope it helps.
