The REAL Ramadan Rules You Never Knew Existed

  • Ramadan is typically described as a month-long fast. Yet the entire month is filled with feasting. Indeed, binge eating during Ramadan is causing a health crisis in Muslim countries. So why is gluttony and excess portrayed as strict discipline and self control in Islam? Is there a spiritual component to Ramadan? David Wood explores the issue, and uncovers the disturbing truth about Islam's holiest month.

I was in Riyadh during Ramadan back in ‘84. Muslims from everywhere came to walk around a circle for their religious reasons. As they were going to their big circle, there were many women dressed in black from head to toe sitting on hot sidewalks with only their hand sticking out begging for change. Most Muslims walking by to their religious circle ignored these women. That was my introduction to the Muslim religion.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised against overeating, especially during Ramadan. He said: "The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air." - Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Book 25, Hadith 2380. I’ve lived in Arabia and I’ve seen many hypocritical practices about fasting. Just like what you said they eat tons of food at night so they have enough calories reserved for the daytime. And then they have to excuse themselves from doing hardworks since they’re fasting (it became a very good excuse not to do any shit). They work half day and sleep during the other half, at night they feast (eat as much food as they can) before around 4 am. Then the cycle repeats until Eid.

I am currently fasting as part of my spiritual practice, for its health benefits, and to lose some of my fatty tissue. I fast two days a week every week. I don't abstain from taking in fluids, for obvious health reasons and because staying hydrated is crucial for my well-being. I have found that abstaining from food for even a single day provides a spiritually enriching experience. It changes my brain chemistry because the body replaces glucose with ketone bodies, altering hormones in a way that allows for a better connection with God. I even look forward to my fasting days, and although it’s hard to resist eating, it gets easier the longer you do it and the longer you haven’t eaten.
My longest water fast (meaning I only consumed fluids) was two full weeks, or 14 days, without any breaks and without eating when the sun goes down-24 hours a day, every day. Currently, I fast for around 32 hours until I resume eating the next day. So, a full day and the night when I sleep. It might even be longer because I don't stop eating at midnight, and I don't start eating immediately after waking up.
There is substantial research supporting the health benefits of fasting, such as improved metabolic health, enhanced brain function, and reduced inflammation. When done properly, fasting can be a safe and effective practice for both spiritual and physical well-being.

I fast for 3 days every 30 days, all I consume for those 3 days is water. This is not for religious purposes but for my health as it helps to reset my auto-immune system and calm down my allergies/intolerances. It is pretty easy for me to do now, in fact the hardest thing is starting to eat normally after the 3rd day as I have to build up slowly and don't get back to my normal consumption until about day 6. I certainly couldn't gorge for 30 days although I wouldn't find it hard to go without food between sunrise and sunset as I generally don't eat lunch anyhow. Going without water would be much harder. I am aware of the morning and evening feasts as my neighbours are a Muslim family from Afghanistan and during Ramadan they eat in the garden and are still outside eating until the early hours and at weekends they are out all night. One of my friends lives in what has become a mainly Muslim area and even young children are still playing out in the street until 3 or 4am during Ramadan.

As harsh and sarcastic as this video is, I must agree that it feels accurate. I don't consider myself to be part of any specific religion, but I was always quite interested in fasting and made great experiences, when I did it alone. I mainly did water fasting, taking my last meal on Saturday evening, only drinking water during sunday and eat a LIGHT meal again on Monday morning. I felt fantastic with it and similarly with intermittent fasting as well. Only eating once per day, for a longer period of time, mostly when the sun is still up, felt great.
But... Then I was on vacation in a Muslim majority country and during ramadhan i was quite excited, because I heard about how "hard" it is to participate and as someone with some experiences in fasting, I thought this may be an amazing challenge. But what I experienced was just... bad. I don't even have a different word for it.
Only eating when the sun is down significantly slowed down my metabolism. Pair that with the ridiculous amounts of food people were asking me to eat and I had digestive problems pretty much every 2-3 days. I was going back and forth between diarrhea and congestion. My body was sending me ALL the signals, that this is not a sustainable way to eat, so my body literally forced me to stop doing that. I couldn't keep it up, because it felt like if i continue, I will get serious health problems. So, I adjusted the fasting a bit. I ate a relatively big meal in the evening, after the sun went down, went to sleep like usual, got up around 3am to only drink a glass of water and then wait until evening again for the bigger meal. Only then I felt like it was benefiting me. Once i did that, I felt good. Sadly this experience completely shattered my expectation of what ramadhan is about. Especially all this crying out online, that it is "so hard to fast". If you do it in an unsustainable way, then of course it is hard. But for all the wrong reasons.
What is even more sad is that prior to ramadhan a Muslim explained to me, that part of the reason they fast is so that they stay humble. Not indulging into your desire to eat makes you feel compassionate for those you have little to eat, because of poverty. I liked that perspective a lot, but after taking part in ramadhan myself, I can't help myself but think of this as hypocrisy.

First any one can to fasting Ramadan not about stop eat food and drink Fasting is obligatory for every sane adult Muslim who is able to fast. When should the intention be made to fast Ramadan?
A: He must intend before the onset of dawn, and if he does not intend until the onset of dawn, then his fast is invalid. This is evidenced by what came with Malik and al-Nasa’i from the hadith of Ibn Omar, may God be pleased with them, that he said: “No one fasts except those who combine to fast before dawn,” unlike the intention to fast. Volunteering, so it is valid during the day, when Muslim narrated in his Sahih that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, entered upon Aisha, may God be pleased with her, and asked her if she had anything? She said: No, and he, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Then I am fasting.”
Is one intention sufficient for Ramadan at the beginning of it, or is it necessary to set it every night?
A: The correct intention is that his intention at the beginning of the month is sufficient, so he does not need to specify the intention for each night, unless there is a reason that permits breaking the fast, so he breaks his fast during the month, then a new intention is necessary to resume fasting.
Is it permissible to rely on the call to prayer broadcasted by some radio stations to enter Fajr and Maghrib?
A: It is permissible if this broadcast is reliable, and Sheikh Muhammad bin Uthaymeen, may God have mercy on him, issued a fatwa on this.
Q 7: What proves the beginning of the month of Ramadan?
A: The beginning of the month of Ramadan is proven by two things:
The first: Completing the number of Sha'ban thirty days.
Second: sighting the crescent of the month of Ramadan.
What is the ruling on someone who saw the crescent of Ramadan or Eid alone and whose testimony was not accepted?
A: He does not fast or break his fast except with people, when it came in Jami’ al-Tirmidhi and others that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Fasting is on the day you fast.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albani, may God have mercy on him, and because the month is taken from fame, and if it was not well-known among people, it would not have entered at that time. This was issued by Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz, may God have mercy on him.

Most Musli-s gain wei-ht during Ramadan. The only thing binding during Ramadan is to to not eat or drink or have relations from sunup to sundown. I actually do think it can be real fasting, but most of them do just gorge afterwards, that’s how it’s been for a while.
Actually, before the Catholic Church lessened restrictions on Lent, due to people being less pious (I think), the Christians used to call Ramadan, “Effeminat-“, which means “soft”, or which means staying away from things that are hard.
What Christian Lent used to be like was (Some Christians still do this):
      - No food until after 3:00 PM every day
      - One Light meal a day
      - No meat, eggs, or milk the whole way through (Not just on Fridays like now, although you could receive certain Rewards from the Church that allowed you to have certain milk products, if you did well)
      - No relations the whole way through
      - No Eating on Ash Wednesday or for 2 Days I think, starting in Good Friday and ending on Easter
Ramada- does have some aspects of fasting, which I think are good, they do struggle during the day, especially when they have to do things, but again, often times, it just means waiting until night to gorge. Ramada- is more like fast sprints, and Lent was more like a slow moving marathon.

David Wood provided sources both islamic and secular researches proving his point and you just simply dismiss them because you don't like what they say and you don't like David Wood. And it is not even about David Wood. There are thousands of ex-muslism exposing this religion and saying similar things to D. Wood and you also dismiss them because they for example don't speak Arabic. There are Arabic native-speakers who go to your sources to show how ridiculous they are and you dismiss them because they are infidels.
Man, this is an ad hominem argument. Doesn't matter that D. Wood opposes Islam, his argument still stands as long as it is refuted. And it will not be refuted because statistacilly speaking he is right. He presented a mindset of majority of muslims. There are exceptions but it doesn't matter, those exceptions don't come from the proper understanding of Islamic sources but self-piety of some people.

So, they really had to gorge quickly in the mornings to fill up for the day. But, not to worry, he said most cheat anyway and allow each other lots of space during the day to "be alone for a bit (or is that 'bite')" so no one could attest to their violation. After all, when Ramadan occurs during the summer long days, that's quite a lot to ask of someone to not eat ALL day long!! Personally, the longest fast on water alone I've ever done was only 7 days and only while hiking the Smoky Mountains-- hardly what a pious Muslim must do for a whole month eating only huge meals twice a day (and of course those hidden in-between snacks/bites to eat!!! Just did a one day no water fast having just read that is how the Jews fast, no water even. As for my friend, he has absolutely NO interest in Islam but had to play along as the culture is so controlled by their despotic, hypocritical government.

It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air." - Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Book 25, Hadith 2380. Some of the problems are: many Muslims do not follow a "live and let live" mantra (some in a very violent way, targeting non-Muslims); the West with its open and accepting culture is pitifully ignorant about the teachings and culture, so are misled by Muslim lies to their detriment; and people raised Muslim can be ignorant of the obvious flaws of Islam.
People should be free to believe whatever they want, but it should be an informed choice based on a very critical examination of anyone claiming to have a direct line to God.
How informed is a choice if you are not permitted to say anything critical about the man who founded the religion (nor even draw him), and who, along with his family and cronies, highly profitted from revelations which cannot be proven, and who was absolutely brutal to those recognizing the flaws. Talk about controlling a narrative.
Truth can save a person from a wasted life of hate-filled ignorance. It can save innocents from death, like children used as human shields by organizations like Hamas.
This is a political "faith" which affects non-believers. Best be informed.

Lol, this spot on - I lived in a Muslim country and they would wake up at 3am in the morning to have breakfast before 6am and start feasting at 6pm in the evening.😅
