    See the thing about Dan is, he's not bad because he's predestined to be bad, or even because of circumstances out of his control
    He's only bad because he has an ego the size of goddamn Saturn and refuses to put in the extra effort to learn
    I think we all have something to learn from that

      Imagine if he move to SouthTown ( to place his dojo there ) and soon find himself hopeless against some lowest crooks , gets another beating and left for dead ... and then , he wokes up at Kyokugen's dojo .
      Takuma puts him to train like Ryo & co. did back then , and then Dan becomes unstoppable envolving his Saikyo style .

      Not entirely true, he was barred from training under the same teacher as ryu and ken because he harbored vengeful thoughts about a man who killed his father in front of his face. He then worked hard to develop his fighting style with woefully incomplete understanding of martial arts, the spirit, and other necessary pieces of info. can't deny he's entertaining... if he was a true protagonist I feel he'd be hated, but as a side-character type he's a good comparison to the more stoic and serious Ryu... almost like a wrestling 'Heel' in some ways... you see them act over the top, cocky and arrogant which makes them fun to watch wether they win or lose.

    He was actually decent in Street Fighter 4, and that's what gave him power, Psychological Warfare. His Super Taunt could be canceled by his Ultra, and the sheer idea of Dan Winning would add pressure and make them have mistakes.
    That's the interpretation of Dan I like. He's actually a decent fighter, but he's punching way above his leauge due to sheer arrogance. I think in one comic it showed he has legit skills as a comintator, but still wishes to compete on the World Warrior Circuit.

    • @tcchip

      Even in his debut in Alpha, Dan did a ton of damage if he connected, so even as a joke character you had to take the match seriously. It's only in later Alpha games that they really reduced his damage output.

      He's also clearly a talented martial artist, but his mentality is terrible and holding him back from coming anywhere close to his full potential. His Gadoken is a perfect example - Dan is good enough to do one-handed fireballs, but he refuses to just do a conventional two-hander even if it would vastly improve the Gadoken.
      On the other hand, given what Kage's like maybe Dan IS actually living up to his full potential.

      On the topic of personality, I feel like MK11 is copying SFV to a certain extent. Nobody really cared about Rambo and Rain, but when Mileena was showcased, you know people bought the game just so they could try that sassy bitch out. Between watching her plat Stabberscotch on her opponent's face, and just her posing like Jojo's while her ghost sais stabbed people from all directions, I felt like there was a lot more personality in her fighting style than had ever been showcased in previous MK entries.
      Dan's so expressive in his animations, but SFV has been experimenting with idle animations since season 2. Now they've set something of a wild standard since it's a new but compelling method of simplistic story-telling through a character's body language.

    Personally, I always saw Dan as less "lousy" and more "lousy compared to the rest of the cast". He's certainly weaker than pretty much every other major SF character, but still considerably stronger than any "ordinary" human within his verse; in one of the comics he stomped a group of illuminati goons, all by himself. So, while Dan may have potential, it is ultimately wasted as he chooses to *act* strong rather than *be* strong.

    Dan being highly technical actually makes perfect sense to me. Dan is weaker in canon so you as the player have to work much harder to get the same kind of results out of him. Dan's techniques are inconsistent because he doesn't practice them, so if somebody wins with Dan to me it canonically represents what happens if Dan happens to do everything right.

      specifically, he takes 200% while his back is turned, and 500% at the very end. The backturn pose also gives both players 1 bar of EX, and the wave of thumbs-up's at the end gradually gives 2 EX bars, for 3 whole EX bars in total for each player. So, he gets reimbursed for the taunt, and you get a free super to kill him.

    i love the way they made dan in this game, i had thought about them doing something like what they had done in the end bc of how you used taunting to drain the opponents special meter in art of fighting but just being an inverse of giving both people meter instead and they did even cooler things with the idea

    It's always funny to me how Dan is a parody of a specific character from an SNK fighting game that's long since faded into obscurity, meaning a lot of his newer fans probably have no idea that he's even a parody -- a goofy joke character, certainly, but not a parody.

    I like how the joke is kind of on the player too.
    As you’ve said, Dan’s taunts give you meter towards your v-trigger, which gives the enemy more ability to put him down using a v-trigger combo to melt him away. But the thing is just that: if you have no idea how to use your v-trigger that idea is pretty much moot, giving Dan the win. Which sort of says “you’re so awful at this game that you can’t beat Dan, he literally _gave_ you the win.”

  • @mas8705
    @mas8705 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It really does seem like Dan is the epitome of telling a character’s story through gameplay. Not just how Dan is able to use taunts in his gameplay to shockingly effective use (when in the right hands), but how his whole gimmick literally is how he is his own worst enemy. And in a sense, Dan in a good sum of his appearances has proven that time and again.
    Best example I can think of is how his own “raging demon” attack from MvC2 can leave him on the edge of dying if he lands it. Yeah, it does good damage, but Dan is kind of going to blow over at any moment. That or the secret of Dan’s “special taunt” in SFV where if you hit him with your super move when he finishes the taunt, that’s an immediate KO against him.

  • @masonwhite3698
    @masonwhite3698 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's also worth noting that Dan's super taunt (Which is still in SFV and is even more elaborate than ever) plays into this as well; if the opponent waits for it to play out completely, the game immediately fills their super meter. If they hit Dan with a super *right* as the taunt is finishing, it does enough damage to instantly KO him. Which is about the most perfectly Dan thing I can think of.

    But Dan Kicks? That's not a failed tatsumaki, that's a Saikyo style original, and it's Decent.

  • @Err0_Will
    @Err0_Will 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One thing I like is how his Haoh Gadouken actually improved between SF4 and SFV where it used to blow him back from the sheer force of it to be being the least expensive V-Trigger and even having guard break properties meanwhile Ryu needs an entire V Guage and a Super Guage to get a guard break projectile. To me this shows that Dan is actually a threat, has some raw power that somewhat puts Mr. Streets himself to shame and can improve with just minimal effort but he's too busy being the idiot we all know and love to properly do things correctly

    Here is the thing. What happens if Dan actually became much more serious and travels around the world to improve his fighting style to become better.
    I imagine this. When Ryu's master Gouken doesn't accept Dan as his student after he saw his motivation for revenge. Instead of becoming quite of a joke. Dan plans to travel around the world and learn various different styles of combat and compete to illegal combat arenas to compete stronger opponents. Never the less he lose 5x times in a row and eventually he learn some acquired new skills to improve his abilities little by little while creating some ki techniques from Gouken and implement on his own.
    Eventually he won matches little by little and make a name of himself around the streets that even the original Dan can't do. Despite all of his improvements, it isn't enough to defeat Sagat in terms of skill. When he learned rumors about this so called S.I.N Tournament where the greatest fighters among the world compete for the title of who is the strongest.
    Dan agreed about this tournament and proceed to go there to fight stronger opponents while knowing that Sagat will be there as well. In the first match he fought against Ryu, which surprises Dan the most including Ryu himself. Unlike his Counterpart he became a lot stronger but not as a strong as Ryu but he can still match him 1 on 1. As the two fights, Ryu notice that Dan is quite strong and gives him a tougher fight. When Ryu was about to perform a Hadoken attack, Dan Suddenly performs his better version of Gadoken.
    This Gadoken is quite different from the Original one. Despite being short range, The Gadoken acts more of a shotgun in close range, which means it packs a lot of punch similar to a standard Hadoken but in close range.
    This shocks Ryu as he was hit by the Gadoken attack, sending him flying in the air while Dan follows up towards Ryu. When Ryu maintain his composure he soon fight off Dan and won in the end with little struggle.
    Because of this loss especially from Gouken's Student. Dan still need to improve himself while fight opponents stronger than him. While maintaining his joke character like persona. He still befriends both Sakura and Blanka. But unlike the Original Sakura takes Dan seriously as he was a good sparring partner while Sakura was interested at his Ki techniques. While Blanka, Dan have a positive and funny friendship towards both of them.
