Well, when you needed to write on marble (or clay) plates, extra space meant more marble, hence a heavier or bigger (for the clay) slab, which wasn't very practical.
Papyrus and parchment were also difficult to come by, hence expensive, so, again, spacing meant more money.

The pigeon bomb is really cool. They trained them to peck pictures of enemy warships and the pecking action is how it steered the bomb.

9:15 I know about this one! The pigeons were trained on simulations to peck at glass plates which had images from out in front of the device. If they pecked at the images of enemy targets they where given food. The glass plates could tilt so if the pecking wasn't centered they would mechanically alter the flight path of the bomb. It was both cheaper and more effective then any gidence system of the day (this is before heat seeking missiles), and NO, the pigeons did NOT get out. They were considered expendable.

Once we've caught up in these infrastructural boosts, THEN we can start on more ambitious projects like increasing technological standards.
Unfortunately, it'll be another 14 years before I can run for office, and I don't WANT to touch the cesspool that is politics with a 500-mile pole, much less dive in, but if it gets bad enough in those 14 years, i'll do it.

The pigeons were trained to peck ships on the screen and it would dispense food. In the actual missile, the pigeons were sent on a one way trip pecking at a german ship on a screen, steering the missile. The peck detecting and live screen technology was too expensive though so the british said no.
