  • In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Thank you, Sir. You just touched my heart with your simplicity. It scares me to death when I think of what our world has come to...

Yes a very nice chap and very interesting in his many tv programmes. I met him very briefly in The grave yard of his church in Sussex.

Peter Owen-Jones' message is certainly spiritual in nature: What is our environment telling us about the life of our collective spirit? His message is moving, and accessible.

I find this very inspirational, not from a religious stand point, I see past his religious background and mine which is different to his. What he is saying is beyond the realms of religion, the walls of a box we fall into, the re adjustment of views and the simple belief that we are all just that the human race. So many people calling for change, the next few years will be very interesting!

    1. Advocating the abolition of religion on the basis that it does not respect life - Christianity - Thou shalt not kill? A fundamental tenet to Christianity that if followed would mean all life is protected

As global temps rise , the crops providing the foods we eat and the foods our cattle eat , will struggle to grow in the global tonnage required to feed billions. That temp is 24c. We are nearly there. Another decade maybe. Yes more CO2 is good for growth of Oxygen producing trees but the temp still rises and do we want to eat trees.

I like Peter, and enjoy listening to him. But his assessment here, is disingenuous.
He says "We must start to take responsibility for the legacy we are leaving".
Very true, but he ignores the primary responsibility and cause of the unfolding 6th mass extinction he refers to.
During his own lifetime, the human population has doubled. Peter, himself a father of four, asks "What are we leaving our children?"
A more apposite, but uncomfortable question might be "How many additional human beings, are we contributing to this devastating anthropocene age?"
Globally, the current answer is 230,000 net additional human beings every day, and rising. The correlation between population growth and species extinction is exact, and can only be ignored wilfully. www.biologicaldiversity.org/programs/population_and_sustainability/extinction/
For Peter to talk about his being 'fortunate' in building up his air miles and concomitant carbon footprint, and then go on to advocate global free movement going forward as being beneficial, is as ridiculous, as it is naive, as it is convenient.

That can apply to us all ,now we are more knowledgeable what we must do to co-exist & play our part in improving what we now know does more harm than good .For example love water not Oil ,stop supporting banks ..stop shopping ,the consumer holds all the power its time to use it . Love Peace Justice for ALL - Brian Haw . We are all responsible in what we each can contribute positive or negative that is a choice as ,we are society . Taking action is far more productive than falling in tot he old habit of pointing blame ,which in turn simply deflect from what we do not want to recognise in ourselves sooo we all " Have to be the change we want to see in the world " Peace Paula

    • @aaronmarchant6295
      @aaronmarchant6295 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree that of course, responsibility belongs to each of us. And our lifestyle and consumer choices, are of great importance. To advocate being the change we want to see, is a great start. But we must not fall into the trap, of not wishing to discuss 'uncomfortable' societal issues, where they are identifiable. To do so, is not to blame others or to exempt ourselves from blame, but is to advocate collective responsibility for necessary reform. Failure to address the more 'difficult' topics, is to be complicit in their perpetuation. If ones neighbour, is savagely beating his children, it is not enough to hope he may choose to adopt our own 'enlightened' example.
Similarly, this anthropocene age, that Peter refers to, is happening now. Its cause is indentifiable. And its urgent remedy requires a strong and persistent advocacy.
"Whatever your cause, it is a lost cause without population stabilisation" Paul Ehrlich (quote)

Yes, my first reaction; 4 kids. He has lived in a most delightful part of the world and has had the chance to freely travel around the world. He has previously shown that we need to be part of small communities where we know each other and understand each others needs. If he is advocating global free movement and the end of nations, sorry I don't want to live in that world. Otherwise I admire his advocacy for the environment but this is something we all MUST do. We have no other choice.
