You should definitely listen to ‘They took the children away’ by Archie Roach. It’s a stunning and heartbreaking song and it’s where the ‘And the children came back’ refrain comes from!

@@ThatSingerReactions You would love it! Very powerful, The song deals with the mistreatment of indigenous Australians and the nonrecognition of indigenous cultures in Australia, and was part of efforts to raise awareness of Australia's Stolen Generations - the forcible removal of Australian Aboriginal children from their families between 1909 and the 1970s.
Midnight Oil recorded "The Dead Heart" for the handing back ceremony of Uluru (Ayers Rock) to its traditional Aboriginal owners. The band was then invited to tour through some of the most remote communities in the Australian outback with the Aboriginal group, the Warumpi Band, a tour that was known as the Blackfella/Whitefella tour.

@@ThatSingerReactions and the line just before it 'I'm Gurrumul, I'm Archie' is referring to Archie Roach, who wrote & performed 'Took the Children Away', which was the inspiration for this version. Back when Midnight Oil recorded The Dead Heart, they toured with the Warumpi Band, who have a bunch of excellent songs. There's a video of both bands performing the Warumpi's Balckfella/Whitefella and the Oils' Dead Heart during that tour. Definitely worth watching: th-cam.com/video/7N5ZsCGjUz0/w-d-xo.html

Yeah Senator Briggs. Nick this is a follow up to they took the children away by the incredible Archie Roach. Unsure if you ever noticed Dr G plays a right handed guitar with the left hand 🖤💛❤️ Dewayne does nicely backing up with the chorus. Briggs mentioned the walk off (from little things big things grow)

Close, but not quite. It's actually a reference to the Cummeragunja walk-off in 1939 by Yorta Yorta people, a bit closer to Briggs' heart as he's a Yorta Yorta man.

  • @wilks6
    @wilks6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

The rapper is Briggs. He's a legend in his own right. So the reference to "I'm Gurrumul, I'm Archie" is that the song is a reply to Archie Roach's "They Took The Children Away."

Its hard to appreciate this song fully if you don't know Australia's history.
It is both heartbreaking and uplifting.
It is a beautiful commemoration of a people that suffered and a celebration of them overcoming and commanding their place in the world.
I share a land with my brothers even though i don't share blood. The spirit in this song is my hope for our shared future.

Down here in Australia, we have yet to come to terms with our colonial history. We have the oldest continuous civilisation, which we should celebrate, but it's hard to celebrate until the truth of the colonial past is known. Indigenous people are statistically more likely to go to jail than University. The fix for these inequalities is massively complex, and people like Briggs and the notable indigenous people referred to in that song have succeeded in spite of the racism and inequalities baked into our country.

Briggs is a legend. His songs hit hard. January 26 is awesome. About how Australia Day needs to change the date.
He has plenty of others too.
He did a more humorous one with Tim Minchin a musical comedy guy when the big lockdown was on, about how much our federal government botched the whole response and how the Prime Minister decided to go to Hawaii on holiday while the biggest fires we've ever had were happening.

Briggs is a great artist, performer, author and screen writer. He has children's books, and was a writer on the TV animated show Disenchantment.
He has solo songs and also part of a group A.B Original (aboriginal) As he and the other members are indigenous Australians. They released 1 self titled album and it has heavy US West Coast sounds, Speaks of the struggles of indigenous peoples of this land. Every song on it is 🔥. "2 Black 2 Strong" is my personal favourite from the album but theyre all so close.

I think "Like A Version" is always done in one take, and is done live to air over the radio on the Australian government-funded youth radio station Triple J. Triple J plays international and Australian bands and artists who usually write their own music, or cover other bands and artists who write their own music. Generally 'Indy' or independent artists... but including the singer-songwriters that make it huge like U2, Taylor Swift and Cardi B. Triple J likes to spend a lot of time on new and upcoming bands, and songs that cover issues of injustice and youth experiences.
Triple J is notable for having the world's largest annual music countdown as voted by listeners, called The Hottest 100. The Hottest 100 has an international following, and tends to skew a little bit more mainstream than the daily Triple J playlist. However the annual Hottest 100 playlist is generally a great collection that captures the varying zeitgeists of Western music released over the last year. It covers most modern music genres.

Briggs is a brilliant artist, always with something to say, in a way that punches you in the face with it. In another Like A Version, he did a modernised, politicised, version of Dumb Things along with the original artist, Paul Kelly, and Dan Sultan. Strongly recommend that also.

Gurrumal (RIP) is a blind Indigenous Australian musician with an incredibly traditional sounding voice
He learned to play the guitar upside down because he was left handed from a poor community
Briggs is also an indigenous Australian who you may remember from your reaction from Golden Era 2013 Cypher with Hilltop hoods Vents K21 Funkoars ETC
Very proud of our black history and our black future as I am a privileged enough to live in this country on land stolen from the First Nations people
I am from Wollongong (traditionally known as Dharawal Country ~100km south of Sydney)
Briggs is now the founder of music label Bad Apples with another favourite of mine Barkaa who raps about the injustice of the falsified and whitewashed “civilised” history of Australia

This song is a twist on They Took The Children Away by Uncle Archie Roach, they remade in the spirit of the children came back, making a point of say WE ARE STILL HERE! No matter what they did to our people we are still here and we are the dead hearts heartbeat, we're our ancestors wildest dreams, sadly not everyone who was stolen made it home and back to country and family, and so for them we are the living proof they couldn't break us ❤.

You have to do Archie Roach's Took the Children Away. This is the sequel to that song. The chorus "I'm Gurrumal, I'm Archie ... " that's referring the Archie Roach. Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter are trailblazers for First Nations recording artists.

One of my favourite songs. The song commemorates Indigenous Australians who have triumphed despite the Australian Government's oppressive policies such as cultural assimilation, ones that removed children from their families. It is a sequel to Archie Roach's They Took the Children Away which, "It's just me" mentioned. You may wish to watch the sequel (not a request to react), but it will provide more insight th-cam.com/video/IL_DBNkkcSE/w-d-xo.html

The australian government tried to remove all of the children born of mixed parentage, taking them to missions where they were forced to work hard. Many grew into jobs, but their wages were with-held in a paternalistic debacle. A class action was put through the courts a few years ago, the people won and were given a small amount of money,(shameful) because the gov't couldn't afford to pay up properly, they would have gone bankrupt. With those who were very light skinned, some were adopted out to white families. It was not very long ago, in the 1970's if I got it right, that the gov't finally stopped such an inhumane policy. One of my relatives had her children removed and died very young, from the heartbreak. Some of the kids ran away and made it home, a lot were stuck, not knowing their own family, their language or even where they were from. Land does not belong to individuals, the people belong to their home country, so that is even worse in a big way. The movie "Rabbit Proof fence" tells some of the story.

Gotta say I’m not a fan of this. The techno music. The rap. It takes away from the deep deep message that Archie Roach conveyed in the original. And this one ignores so many of the poetic verses Archie wrote. The only other version which comes close is Paul Kelly doing it live. Gave me goosebumps.
