- As you've probably heard by now, the prices for retro/legacy video games have been skyrocketing. Generally speaking a lot of titles have seen a huge boost in value on eBay and the resale market. But when it comes to those rare games, or 'hidden gems' that collectors love to hunt, those are going for 2x to 3x their original value.
Recently I grabbed a handful of games that we'll run through, including a rare PS3 game that's seen a lot of interest lately. Better yet I got it brand new, with a slight caveat.. Join me for Episode 2 of our game collecting series, where I hurt my wallet for your viewing pleasure. (I'm sorry wallet, but this isn't your first rodeo).

Aerospace 303 white bottle spray is excellent at rejuvenating tired plastic. Wiping down older game cases with it makes it look so much better.
Yes! I have so many damaged games, would love to see how to repair them.
The faded cover is from sitting in the sun. A lot of people were selling these games at outdoor flea markets. And they just leave them out all day every weekend. This is very common in Colorado.
Or San Diego if you watch Pat the NES Punk's Flea Market Madness videos over the years.
In Southeast Asia, most stores would display them in a glass display case that has light bars built into it (like how store owners would display their brand new smartphones). If the seller display the game in some way that the light bar can shine directly on the game cover, that can also causes the game cover to fade overtime. I've seen it happened to PURE (PS3) game cover when I was looking for 2nd hand games at my local game stores, it's not pretty.

I got Folklore from my mom early on in the PS3 era, didn't play it for like a year thinking a it's a game my mom bought me those are never any good. Let's be honest we've all had those bargain bins games from our parents at some point. Absolutely loved it and it completely changed my mind on games I got from my mom. I even went back to my "moms gifts" bargain bin collection to find games like road trip adventure, a weird jrpg/racing game with so much heart it hurts.
So I don't blame you for wanting to open this game, it deserves to be played.
I can remember all the fantastic times me and my dad played Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. I’m 22, my dad is 48 and both of us are super hyped for Super Rush on the Switch
Folklore holds a special place in my heart as one of the very few games set in Ireland with Irish mythology :D great pick ups!
I played Folklore first time on my new PS3 in 2007 when I lived in IE. Didn't even know it's about Irish mythology.
Super interesting game, you don't see risks like folklore as much anymore
I passed on it as I wasn't feeling the demo at all, but I did eventually pick it up before the price went up because I kept seeing it on Hidden Gem lists
I feel only IGN did justice to Folklore in their review. It’s a really nice game.

Bionicle is a huge nostalgic hit for me. I remember they came in a tube, it was all so cool!

I got folklore cib for 30 in February, guess I pulled the trigger at the right time lol
Also got it for 10 or 15€ in January.

Never played Folklore before, but the Japanese version called FolksSoul goes for like 4 bucks in bargain bins over here in Japan 😅
I bet right now it would be the same for the English version if a copy turned up at a retailer like GameStop, or if a store that doesn't specialize in games had a copy. But if you found it in a local store that specialized in older products they'd probably be aware of the game's relative rarity, and probably would price a pre-owned copy around $60-$75, or an unopened copy would probably be around the same amount as in the video.
Pricing on old games is weird sometimes.
Found your channel recently, you do great work. Love the content. If I could recommend maybe putting a 3-5 second clip of gameplay from each game, in between each package you open, that would be really nice to see as a viewer

Also Ryan, Sony would give some big box stores employees discount on their games and the games would have the scratch out upc bar on the back so you would not sell them.
Yeah i dont think that copy of Fokelore has any neat history. I used to get tons of games and CDs that had the barcode scratch/punch - its free ones they send to reviewers and discount bin stuff. IMO it makes it no more or less desirable - as its the game i want - a clean disc is more important than sealed or graded or any of the current nonsense. Worst timer to buy games in history. But yeah IMO I dont care about barcode! wouldn't hurt the value. :) but i dont think it could possibly add in any way.
Two things: I'd definitely like to see a series of short videos where you show parts of your collection. Also I platinumed Dark Cloud on PSNow and it was fantastic.

Man, it was a pain to get a copy of Folklore and NieR a couple of years ago, but I happened to get a good deal on them, except that their boxes were in really bad shape. Fortunately, I was able to change them to another case and they're like brand new now. I don't really collect games based on rarity, but those two games really were something special for me personally.
Man, I loved Folklore. The Demo was great and I had a blast playing it, definitely worth playing, but I don't know if it is worth the 130$. Hope you'll enjoy it!

Dark Cloud is one of my favorite games of all time. An underrated classic.

I love video games!!! I'm actually shocked that VF5 is $16. I picked up a good copy at one of my retro game stores a couple years ago for two dollars. Thankfully I also have folklore cause I see how much that one is climbing too. Good stuff over all! 👍
Frogger 2 Swampy's Revenge! I can still remember the hopping sounds and the pyramid pencil level. I used to play that all the time with my cousin. Makes me a little teary eyed haha

NTSC is mostly popular because it’s a bigger market and various types of people buy them like collectors, casual NTCS system owners and speedrunners.

That comment about the ps3 era games sat so well with me, i literally went into my uncles room after asking i could borrow some games after getting my ps3 slim after saving money and I think out of the 5 games I picked I only ever played one of them and it was oblivion, at the time he told me he had never played it so he didn't know if it was good. He never got that game back

There's a few Bionicle games over the years
Two on PS2 that were decent, one got a 360 port and it's worth getting on that just for achievements, but there's also a bunch of handheld games, mainly on GBA
However the best game was Mata Nui Online Game on PC, that was the only real point and click game I put any time into back when I was a kid
Downloaded the Folklore demo back in the day when it released, always always wanted to play it but never did. Something about that theme song. In all of gaming that hits the hardest for me for some reason. Gotta get it and play it this summer for sure.

I remember picking up folklore from a gamestop on the whim because it was cheap when I first got my ps3 back in 2011 and I really do think it is one of those oddball but satisfying games because of the use of the six-axis mechanics, didnt realize it was so valuable now. Kind of cool.

One of the most rare is games is splatter house on PS3 That game has gone up in price Like ratchet and clank HD collection
38£ in Cex, seen last Sun, PS3 version. Same happened with Ratchet to the Nexus.
and splatter house is basically a collection edition. So it gets even harder to find

DUDE I literally think about/remember Folklore at least once a year! I so want a new game nowadays that feels an plays like how Folklore did.
On the PS3 and XBOX360 era of games.... Go for the Complete/Game of the year editions as they do have at least up to date patches and DLC on disk(s). So when the online stores do go offline, you will still have all the content.
I was unaware folklore was so rare, i got it in a bundle when i bought my ps3 around 4 years ago

I played the folklore demo when i was real young and decided to preorder it and bought it. Didnt realize that game shot up in price. Same thing with lollipop chainsaw. I still need splatterhouse though. It seems to me like thats the trio of ps3 games to collect.
Puppeteer, 3D Dot Heroes, and R&C: Into The Nexus are a few of the games I got way before the prices got silly.
i found all of emr for DIRT CHEAP a few years ago. never have ran into pupateer though. i can't believe R&C into the nexus has went up so high i think i traded some random game for it several years ago when PS3 games were going for almost NOTHING.
Prices are silly for sure!!! Its bugging me. im making a lot of money selling my games, but i just have a lot of games, im not a "collector" per say., I just buy and love a lot of games, and buy games i want to play but never do. None of my friends are impressed ha-ha - i buy games to play. So this price increase means games I want to play are just getting stupid prices for no real reason... Its making me like digital which i never thought id say!!!
I had Puppeteer and 3D Dot Heroes back in the day new. Played them, didn't like them, sold them. Loved the aesthetic for both. But couldn't get into them.
I personally (and many other at the time) didnt think they are worth $60 (I think Puppeteer was like $40?). So $40-$60? Sure. But people are paying waaaay more now. They are just not worth paying a lot for. Just arent. I get some people might like them. Not bashing the games. But they didn't even review well back then - seeing the prices now. Crazy. Its this weird collectors, investment, FOMO crazy hysteria thats caught on (Joes Diner for $80, WTF!!?). Game prices are dumb now.
i love River City Rampage, got all the 3DS games. River City Girls came out, I dont usually do it but splurged and got the Limited Run version. Its a $30 digital game. Thats what its worth. I think I paid $45? i see on a website its now $140+!? its a year old! So dumb. I immediately sold it yesterday, bought the $30 digital version, and im just holding my $110 laughing. I dont get it. --- everyone asking "does it have the card with it?". Yeah it did, but holy shit you want a video game for the card it came with?

Bionicle game was mindblowing for its time, especially if you a fan. Really enjoyed it a lot when I was a kid (played on Pc)

I think that faded cover virtua fighter might be something it could be from sitting in the sun but I remember hearing when it came out that some copy's had printing issues might wanna check into that more
I own Dark Cloud 1 and 2. Oblivion and Folklore were my first PS3 games. My favorite all time PS game is Legend of Legaia. It's resale/collector's price is around 30 dollars. I know that as I am looking to replace the copy that was stolen from me.
