IDW Soundwave is my personal favorite interpretation; he never quit Decepticonism and Megatron's goal, and, by joining Optimus, not only did he realize all life deserve respect, but he decided to atone for his sins, too. I love redemption stories.
The only thing I don't understand about Soundwave is his motivations. Why is he so loyal to Megatron when most of the other Decepticons would jump at the chance of taking over? Soundwave was the closest thing to a friend that Megatron ever had. Megatron never raised a hand to Soundwave even when his plans failed. He'd give Starscream a good thumping every other episode just because.
soundwave believes fully in the decepticon cause and megatron is the living personification of that cause in his mind thus he is loyal. he is also often shown to be one of the first to join the decepticons and thus megatron would trust him.
Another factor to why Soundwave's so loyal to Megatron is the fact that he's hated by pretty much every other Decepticon (Remember his blackmailing tendencies?). And they wouldn't hesitate to leave him on the battlefield if they could get away with it.
One of the reasons soundwave fights so well is because he was a gladiator in the pit of Kaon or something on Cybertron and he won every battle expect when he fought with Megatron. Soundwave and Megatron were almost equal altough Megatron won in the end but because Megatron beat him Soundwave respected Megatron and same did Megatron and therefore Soundwave joined Megatron as the very first decepticon by his side... Its actually been said/theorized that both Soundwave and Shockwave are more powerful than Megatron and, had it not been for their loyalty to him, either one could rule the Decepticons
Shockwave could easily rule the Decepticons if he deems it to be the logical solution. And Megatron knows that if he screws up, Shockwave would make his move. This is also why he values Soundwave a lot more. Soundwave is completely loyal to Megatron and is in the position to shut down any would-be usurpers. This in turn would also make Shockwave think twice about overthrowing Megatron because it is simply not logical to rule the Decepticons without Soundwave's backing.
For Shockwave, that’s actually the case in the comics since he’s not really that loyal to Megatron. Like in the Marvel comics continuity he’s overthrown Megatron quite a few times, and in the IDW continuity he proved himself to be a real threat to Megatron during the Dark Cybertron event, in fact the only reason why he didn’t immediately conspire against Megatron was because it was never in his best interest to rule the Decepticons, becoming one was always just a means to an end for him, like they were the only ones who tolerated his experiments
It is, and surprisingly, his visor is also removable, but we have yet to see that for more then a drawing flaw, but that’s the way most character with visors work
The G1 Soundwave will always have a special place in my heart, but the Prime Soundwave did a wonderful job of evoking why. They pulled forward all the parts that mattered and updated him in a way that made sense with it.
Really loved him in G1, but even more so in Transformers: Prime. His silent presence is so utterly terrifying and when he broke his vow of silence, "Soundwave superior. Autobots inferior!", the viewers got chills.
In the IDW version he's a big Freedom Fighter equality for all type. So Optimus Prime basically convinced him that disregarding the Humans was inherently against his own ideology by pushing him to realize that that they had 'Sparks' as well... ie they were people... even if those 'Sparks' were weird to his sense to the point of him pretty much not realizing that was what he was sensing from them the whole time. Pretty much immediately he shifted his agenda to include all sentient life on earth as equals, and started working with Prime to Politics-fu their way into making sure the rest of Transformerdom didn't basically run over and ruin earth by accident or design. And since Soundwave is THE True Believer in the Decepticon cause he went above and beyond in helping Prime ensure these things, and then in declaring his Decepticon commune would be above all politics and allow anyone who's peaceful to stay. Soundwave is Best boy.
He personified the original IDW Decepticon ideal of equality (likely due to Ravage, Laserbeak, and Buzzsaw always being treated as second class) even after it got lost by Megatron and later Galvatron. He was by far one of the best Decepticons from their comics.
I think it's a crime that Buzzsaw has gotten so little attention compared to the other cassettes. If you read their original bios from the G1 toys, Buzzsaw is described as a character who views the destruction of his enemies as an art form, systematically tearing them apart by strafing them with his sharp beak. Prime's Soundwave is fascinating to me. They took a character who is well known for having a distinctive voice and made him almost entirely silent, with only a single line of Dialogue with his own voice in the entire series. This could have backfired on the writers horribly. But they made him Ice cold and Badass as they come, sleek, efficient, and he ended up being the best damn character in the show.
@@returnedtomonkey8886 Well, kind of true to be honest, in the cartoon Soundwave (of course), Starscream (treacherous, but still high ranking) and Skywarp (dumb, but he was indeed the one to awaken Megatron inside the crashed Ark) were "honored" to hold Megatron as a gun... *Also Optimus ("Countdown to Extinction") and the autobot X with Spike Witwicky's mind ("Autobot Spike") as one time wielders.
Soundwave... the True Believer. What ever form he takes in new media that always remains consistent and true. He's practically defined by his desire for a cause to serve. Its why I always love him.
@@iLikeBigBotsAndiCanNotLie question if something were to happen to Megatron would you take his place as leader of the Decepticons or would you let someone else (not Starscream) be the new leader?
IDW's Soundwave is one of my favourites by far, but that just ties in with how much love they give him in those comics. It's hard not to find a good quote of his in their run. Honestly, it might be fun to do an episode on transformers' mouths. and faceplates. IDW has some good examples of this for going over how it works. Think of it as a follow-up biology episode.
Why Soundwave took a vow of silence: On Cybertron a disease spread like wildfire killing everyone. Cybertrons Council decided to close all space bridges, while Soundwave (a member of the council) disagreed. He watched, powerless as the council closed every one of the space bridges, dooming planets. Soundwave couldn’t continue to be a member and left, and that day forward decided to take a vow of silence. Soundwave used to be good, but turned corrupt and silent. Silent, and scary
7:57 God I love TFP Soundwave. He looks so badass. The complete silence and body language is just eye wateringly cool. His slender look is perfect for his role and the stealth drone alt mode looks amazing
It's so cool that the original idea for soundwaves character showed up in Prime. I'll admit most soundwaves don't do much of that espionage stuff, but I was so happy to realize original soundwave and prime soundwave are so similar in behavior.
You know what I would love? A "the basics" on toy class sizes. deluxes, scouts, leader,.. What's the cut off for each size, how does a modern deluxe compair to an older scout... ect.
for the whole 3 seasons, SoundWave - to us - is the best even without saying any words, then when he was captured, the hype rose even higher and higher with that only 4 words : "SoundWave superior, Autobots inferior". In conclusion, villains need no talk.
I'm late to the party but still, the prime version of Soundwave is my favorite. Incredibly loyal, efficient and with an elegant design. Not only that but the way he made fun of the autobots after being captured by them is one of the best scenes along wuth the scenes where he defeated Airachnid without much trouble
its pretty sad that you couldnt really tell soundwave was in the live action movies... they're a horrible mess... i want a reboot, directed and written by someone who knows the property...

Jazz used to be my favorite transformer when i was little but over the years soundwave has taken that spot. In other words *Soundwave superior, autobots inferior.*
TFP Soundwave is the best he has a sleek and cool design that would take down anyone trying to interfere with Megatron's plan and the only way they could defeat him was by sending him to another dimension
Prime soundwave was a gigachad -undying loyalty -helps his friends out with groundbridge -didn't talk the entire series -Gets captured and says nothing except "soundwave superior, autobots inferior" -basically ki11s himself to not let intell out
4:05 I really like Soundblaster character and concept. Though I wish they made more of him, in a similar way they do with Optimus Prime and Nemesis Prime. -6:57 I like the idea of the helicopter mode for Soundwave. -I like how the TF2: Revenge of the Fallen Soundwave toy has it G1 colors. Wish they keep that for TF3: Dark of the Moon.
Same! I really loved how Animated treated the Decepticons as individual threats, almost as sort of a loosely aligned "rogues gallery." So you'd have Blackarachnia doing femme fatale stuff and the Constructicons being single-minded boozers and Soundwave being this mass-mind control techno-wizard with awesome sound powers (albeit a glass jaw, because, hey, no Destronium).
3:40 I recommend pausing and reading the letters page; it's surprisingly wholesome to see people writing in letters and having Soundwave respond to them in character. I don't see that sort of stuff so often nowadays.
Even as a kid I recognized how cool Soundwave was. He was a 'con of few words so that always made him seem more in control. And he was unique in his loyalty to Megatron. The only version of Soundwave I ever got was the Fall of Cybertron version. I did also get all his data disc booster packs. I even found Buzzsaw on eBay complete with a tiny case. Ebay really is the ultimate cybertronian scrapyard.
Soundwave is one of my absolute favourite characters in all his incarnations, but I love the most TFPrime Soundwave and IDW Soundwave. Fantastic video! Love your "Basics" videos. Please do more. There are a ton of these I'd love to watch. If I may suggest some ideas for the future; Basics about the Wreckers, about the Seekers, Rodimus, Megatron, Prowl, Ratchet, Combiners, and the Insecticons. Whatever video you'll make, I am looking greatly forward to watching it. :D
Soundwave gets underrated a lot, his skill set makes him potentially the most powerful card in Megatron's deck. For example, the IDW Revolution crossover had a reformed Soundwave under Optimus's command hack the entire GI Joe arsenal into shutdown, just before Mainframe unleashed a killer counter against him. He then incapacitated SNAKE-EYES, a.k.a. the Ninja Transformers Killer, along with Arcee, and the entire group of Micronauts (Including Acroyear after he hilariously stabbed Snake-Eyes in the shoulder after he stabbed Arcee in the eye), and I think Rom. Soundwave is a one man intelligence crew, a literal mind reader, and a scientist who can design specialised bodies such a Megatrons uber Ore-13 (Super Evergon) body complete with Space Bridge tech.
Also tarn wears the decepticon insignia as mask. Soundwave's face *is* the decepticon insignia. It was as if he was saying that Tarn was just a cheap imitation.
Though you have to admit being an Orbital Satellite that dispatches other Transformers that you can control onto Planets for espionage is pretty cool. It would probably be a cool idea for another Transformer it's so good!
1:28 maybe they did keep that personality but as we all know the Decepticons are aware of Soundwaves Telekinetic powers so they know not to get in his bad side
2:05 i remember that exact scene on 2006 . When the local TV starts to rerun the show.. the Decepticons were trying to encase the petroleum as the Energon Cubes..
I recently acquired the Soundwave mp3 player as a backup to when my iPhone is being charged by the computer. Haven't tried it out yet as I'm waiting for a miniSD card to arrive by special order. This is like trying to buy music for your 8-track player when all the stores have are CDs and some vinyls.
The FOC Soundwave figure was technically a "triple-changer", he had his default car mode from the game, but also his boom box mode, which was a "secret" since it wasn't included in the instructions, absolutly amazed younger me

2. Rumble
3. Soundwave
4. Galvatron
5. Frenzy
All g1
Prime's Soundwave is fascinating to me. They took a character who is well known for having a distinctive voice and made him almost entirely silent, with only a single line of Dialogue with his own voice in the entire series.
This could have backfired on the writers horribly.
But they made him Ice cold and Badass as they come, sleek, efficient, and he ended up being the best damn character in the show.
Not to mention giving him a radical design change.
The thing about soundwave that makes him somewhat more special is that he’s one of the few decepticons that is allowed to use G1 megatron’s gun form.
Is it though? Starscream uses Megatron gun in the 1986 movie to off some big name autobots.
Optimus used Megatron's gun mode more than once. "The Insecticon Syndrome" is another example, as is the Machinima trilogy.
Soundwave... the True Believer. What ever form he takes in new media that always remains consistent and true. He's practically defined by his desire for a cause to serve.
Its why I always love him.
Xi Cree thank you human
@@iLikeBigBotsAndiCanNotLie question if something were to happen to Megatron would you take his place as leader of the Decepticons or would you let someone else (not Starscream) be the new leader?
Transformers Prime: SUPERIOR
Robots in Disguise: MAJORLY TOTALLY UNDOUBTEDLY COMPLETELY DEFINITELY INFERIOR
I like the rid design
I 'gree BW
Lol I kinda read this like the Conductor from A hat in time
Bayformers soundwave is the worst , or is he a grey robot with two pets
But Robots in disguise 2015 is not a bad show
Soundwave: operation: tidal wave
**waves hand in A tidal wave motion**
IDW's Soundwave is one of my favourites by far, but that just ties in with how much love they give him in those comics. It's hard not to find a good quote of his in their run.
Honestly, it might be fun to do an episode on transformers' mouths. and faceplates. IDW has some good examples of this for going over how it works. Think of it as a follow-up biology episode.
"A faceplate would've stopped that." -Orion Pax, after taking a sawblade to the mouth, 'Spotlight: Orion Pax'
Why Soundwave took a vow of silence:
On Cybertron a disease spread like wildfire killing everyone.
Mom and I always thought that Soundwave had the Coolest Voice of All-Time!
mrf19741 Agree. It's so cold and unnerving.
My favorite decepticon of all time, he and blitzwing are the reasons I always support the decepticons
They are the reasons we're bad influences :)
Jk
Blitzwing and Thundercracker are my favourite Decepticons.
Blitzwing was the first triple changer. So awesome.
You know what I would love? A "the basics" on toy class sizes. deluxes, scouts, leader,..
What's the cut off for each size, how does a modern deluxe compair to an older scout... ect.
TheBd62 scouts have been incorporated into the generations legends line keeping the same size as back then depending on who you compare them with
You left out the best scale, Legends
Nah, Deluxe is the best. Paired with Legends (The second best size Class) however, they all look great scale wise!
marvel comic soundwave scares me, he should not be purple nor should he have a *_MOUTH_*
I like that your profile pic, it's indeed an interesting one
The only Christmas present I can remember getting as a child was my very first Transformers, SOUNDWAVE
Best. Transformers. Ever. Period.
You guys want to learn about soundwave? Simple, he is a badass thats all you need to know.
Pursued Mist521 IKR!
True
No, he is superior.
This video superior.
Michael bay inferior
haters inferior
NO no no SOUNDWAVE SUPERIOR
Well played.
Soundwave Superior....Constructicons Inferior!
( totally subscribing to your awesome channel!)
Soundwave Superior.....Autobots Inferior
Damn Right!
Who are you calling inferior nobody would follow an old charismatic bore like him
Oh no two Soundwaves.
@@epsilon7707 make it three
TFP Soundwave is easily one of my favorite villains in any medium. If actions speak louder than words, he doesn’t waste a single message.
Starsream is second in command, but Soundwave is Megatrons right hand.
Soundwave was the first Transformer I ever got! 6th birthday, 1984. 😁
Kevin Peoples
Cool
you were born in 1978
(edit): MATH
Soundwave was the first Transformer our best friend and neighbour got and which made me and my brother love Transformers and buy them like crazy.
Same. My 6th, 1985
Kevin Peoples It is nice that people of every age can enjoy Transformers
Chris Mcfeely, thanks so much. I can't express how much I love this series. Keep up the amazing work!
Tfp sound wave was just the goddamn best
obviosly
I 100% agree
In this house we stan Tfp Soundwave.
Mmmmmmm eh not everyone would agree...tfp soundwave didn’t have the cool voice the g1 one had...
for the whole 3 seasons, SoundWave - to us - is the best even without saying any words, then when he was captured, the hype rose even higher and higher with that only 4 words : "SoundWave superior, Autobots inferior".
In conclusion, villains need no talk.
You got that right. Remember when he yeeted Airachnid?
I'm late to the party but still, the prime version of Soundwave is my favorite. Incredibly loyal, efficient and with an elegant design. Not only that but the way he made fun of the autobots after being captured by them is one of the best scenes along wuth the scenes where he defeated Airachnid without much trouble
its pretty sad that you couldnt really tell soundwave was in the live action movies... they're a horrible mess... i want a reboot, directed and written by someone who knows the property...
Bumblebee did this but only at the beginning, still great tho
(SPOILERS AHOY)
Here to pay respects after Unicron #6 to one of the bravest and most rewarding directions IDW ever took these characters.
Cybertron’s Soundwave was my first, but I love all Prime/RID’s Soundwave above all
I fricken loved transformers prime, but my favorite moment had to be soundwaves speaking line. It was so good, the timing was perfect! You don't beat soundwave, at least not without difficulty
I loved how the prime version made Soundwave look standoffish and fragile and then drastically remind everyone that he will put a bot down.
Jazz used to be my favorite transformer when i was little but over the years soundwave has taken that spot.
In other words *Soundwave superior, autobots inferior.*
TFP Soundwave is the best he has a sleek and cool design that would take down anyone trying to interfere with Megatron's plan and the only way they could defeat him was by sending him to another dimension
locking SoundWave in the Shadow Zone didn't mean defeating him, they're just avoiding their failure at the moment
In rid this proves to be ineffective, sound wave explains how he was able to survive for so long.
Soundwave had coolest voice on the original G1 cartoon.
Prime animated or g1 there all so great
I also love how in the IDW comics, Soundwave has a love of elephants and hangs out with a herd of them on earth.
Prime soundwave was a gigachad
-undying loyalty
-helps his friends out with groundbridge
-didn't talk the entire series
-Gets captured and says nothing except "soundwave superior, autobots inferior"
-basically ki11s himself to not let intell out
My favorite transformer
*Soundwave superior, Autobots inferior*
agreed
*Lazerbeak, eject*
Hell yeah, at last soundwave's episode!

I like the idea of Soundwave being a good guy that fights for Cybertronian equality.
Same here, it helps to flesh out the character to new levels, and made him much more relatable IMHO.
One of many reasons why I love him
Favorite Autobot: Jazz, Favorite Decepticon: Soundwave
I would have to say animated soundwave is my favorite
Operation: Hell Ya.
Same ^_^
Prime was the most menacing to me, a silent threat. He made no grand statements to destroy his foes, just did the job seemingly emotionless.
Riflemutt Prime nah man he does beat Bayformers soundwave though
Who would dislike the classic soundwave??!!
no one in their right mind, that's for sure!
Blaster?? :p
..
The ones that haven’t seen g1...or even know what it is
Tfp would hate classic soundwave lmao
6:57 I've been unintentionally bamboozled
3:40 I recommend pausing and reading the letters page; it's surprisingly wholesome to see people writing in letters and having Soundwave respond to them in character. I don't see that sort of stuff so often nowadays.
Christmas 1984....Soundwave was my first (and favorite) TRANSFORMER ....and still is all these years later.
Mathia Arkoniel
He's my second favorite, too
Same 💜
3:42 if you read one of those he’s basically saying that he sent some spy’s to ruin a kids life
Hey Hey Hey. You forgot to mention that he was killed in the marvel comics. "One of my many bots sent offline by a cosmically empoweres Starscream."
Soundwave, superior. Everysingle other Transformer, INFERIOR
The Pro Noob nobody would follow an uncharismatic bore like him
超サイヤ人ロゼ no one calls Soundwave uncrazmatic
The Godzillord Yeah let’s kick tailgate
Dark Scream constructicons unite
Dom Bee NO WAY!!!!
Cybertron Soundwave is fucking badass! Anyone that disagrees is wrong!
Soundwave superior
Haters Inferior
Mettaton Fabulous agreed!
I think he has the coolest alt. mode and robot mode.
1:45 He just casually picks up tons of metal.
That has the decepticon insignia
soundwave with a mouth is far too cursed to be allowed to exist in this realm, we must hunt down and destroy those old comics
"Soundwave superior, Tarn *most* inferior"
Soundwave cyberverse-
2018-2021 What a legend
Also tarn wears the decepticon insignia as mask. Soundwave's face *is* the decepticon insignia.
It was as if he was saying that Tarn was just a cheap imitation.
Aligned Soundwave superior: Bayformers inferior; Chris' basics videos pretty great as well
Pat Rex 11 i agree with this
Agreed, though making him a communications satellite was very fitting.
Though you have to admit being an Orbital Satellite that dispatches other Transformers that you can control onto Planets for espionage is pretty cool.
It would probably be a cool idea for another Transformer it's so good!
Soundwave is the coolest Transformer ever. Easily my favorite character and the most badass of them all
Soundwave was a pure elite operator.
3:52 *P E T T*
17 yrs old Transformers fan here, fan since when i was like 5 and just realized that his face is the decepticon logo
Prime version was my Favorite. Something about him was so...haunting, like you knew when he got down to business you didn’t stand a chance
1:28 maybe they did keep that personality but as we all know the Decepticons are aware of Soundwaves Telekinetic powers so they know not to get in his bad side
To me, I like how IDW soundwave got a good ending. He finally got peace and he joined the autobots
2:05 i remember that exact scene on 2006 . When the local TV starts to rerun the show.. the Decepticons were trying to encase the petroleum as the Energon Cubes..
Soundwave out of all of the decepticons was the one that seemed like he could be an Autobot and no one would be none the wiser
Awesome video of an awesome series. I really appreciate the work put into them. Keep up the good work
Soundwave is my favorite Transformer
Technically, Animated Ratbat turns into a keytar.
Best version of ratbat tbh
"Why are you booing Me? I'm right!"
5:46
Laserbeak whenever soundwave uses a bomb in his stealth bomber form: BANZAII!
2:44 uuuhhhhh. ..........
The autobots shall be crushed by the hand of soundwave !!!!!!
8:14 Dat voice crack doe
Soundwave writing back in the comics page is just so funny and sweet
The FOC Soundwave figure was technically a "triple-changer", he had his default car mode from the game, but also his boom box mode, which was a "secret" since it wasn't included in the instructions, absolutly amazed younger me
