    Nice video. I enjoyed the information and the way you presented things. You mentioned not particularly liking to use toggles, and I mostly agree. They have their place, but anywhere I use a quick-release bite, I protect it with a half-hitch from the working end of the cordage - OR - if it is the ridge line, I pull a little slack from the standing end, slip a half-hitch over the bite and then secure the far end with either a round turn and two half-hitched or a trucker's hitch. All of those work well, but the bottom line is to use what you are comfortable and confident with. Thanks for the interesting video.

    Poncho for the win. Always have a poncho in the front of my pack. I like them for several reasons the first is it covers me and my pack. Second is they breathe way better than rain gear. Third id you can just sit down and its like a tent already done. And finally it makes a decent tarp alternative. Kind of small for a tarp tent but its better than nothing. With a poncho liner they are quite warm too if you need protection from cold.

    Not sure if anyone has already said this but, at 15 minutes you made a square knot. Same thing can be done with right over left, left over right. The way you tied it though, it can be easily tied wrong and will not grip. The bitter ends need to be on the same side of the line to grip. A bitter end on each side will make a cheater knot, which slips, and can only be tied the way you did it. Thanks for the video!

  • @gud2go50
    @gud2go50 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great advice! Your knot tying tips are very simple but effective. I have watched tons of videos on how to tie up a tarp, but usually when I finally get to setting up my tarp I can’t quite remember how the knots went!😂 To me, simple is always best. There is a young Canadian bushcrafter on You Tube called Kursk Bushcraft where it uses simple knots as well and I learned to use some of his knots. I use to go on the pathfinder channels and I had fancy rapid deployment ridge line’s premade and all that but it became a pain in the butt to haul around after a while.
    Your dog is awesome! Lately, my poor 14 year old Scottish Terrier (Oreo) has been very sick! I’m afraid to lose her. She is my best friend!😟 Thank you for sharing your knowledge!😊

    The candle under the poncho I found out earlier this year is actually called a Palmer Furnace. Thought up by a Dr Palmer who was a caver and came up with to help stave off hypothermia. I have tested it with a tea candle inside a metal mug so it doesn’t blow out easily or burn a hole in your cover element and did have a 10°c + difference from the outside. It works better if you are off the ground on a bag or like the ccf mat you sat on and utilise a Mylar sheet inside. So now we all know what it’s called we can impress people at a wine and cheese party.

      Generally speaking, if you can find where the water comes out of the ground it will be safe. It is important to know what is uphill of the water source. If you were downhill from a landfill and found a crystal clear spring, I would think twice. There is always a risk when it comes to drinking wild water without filtration and purification.

    Nice tip about using the folding saw to hone a knife blade, thanks. I use exactly the same ties/knots as you, except for a slight difference on one.
    A tip back from me, is when you’re tying your ridge line around the first tree, put another loop around before making the ‘bunny ears’. This increases the friction when tightening up. I also always tie the laces of my footwear this way. It helps them to keep tied.
    I’ve been using ponchos since the mid ‘80s for long distance backpacking and day hikes. One for fair, mild weather, two studded together so I can make a larger tarp or a fully enclosed tarp tent, in windy or cold weather, using half the studs as a door.
    Thanks again, even though I use most of the methods you do, through experience, I still learned a couple of pieces of useful info. 👍

Just drill a while slow and steady to dry out the board and spindle before attempting an ember. Ps: I really like the looks of your edc knife, but refrain from getting it because of import taxes to Europe... Greetings!

    Plowpoints are great. Mine's a 3 meter square, it's got a stove jack and heat retention flaps for the upper point. If you orient those flaps horizontally I think you will have barely over 4 feet of rain protection at that formerly upper point. It doesn't move but since the flaps are horizontal the point is barely visible.

    It's funny because I was doing the same thing using a knife to fix the tip on a kitchen knife. But the process is honing the blade which sets the blade Edge straight but you would be better off to have a small stone or better yet one or two paint stir sticks that you could cut short if you wanted to or into multiple pieces and then glue sandpaper orimary cloth or whatever you wanted and you could sharpen your blades that way very well
