    Awesome, well done a special 👏 for Dawn's break dancing! I love your star jumper too.

      I think the star jumper is one of Dawn's favourites. It is about the most colourful jumper she has hahaha. A splash of white here and there. As for the dancing, she was right on it.

      Hi Marion
      It was a tad scary but as you noticed the difference it made, it was well worth it.
      Dawn is great at breakdancing, no video editing involved, well, maybe a little.
      Although nearly at the end of January already, we are really looking forward to working on the inside.
      Thank you for always watching and commenting :-)

    Risky business up on scaffolding and on such thin ceiling boards. But a great result. The thermo image shows the success. Hope your're warmer upstairs now?! I admire you for the difficult decisions and taking such a risk. Bravo

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Helen, none of it was taken lightly but having crawled around on the other ceilings on the collar ties, I knew what I was up against, just less of them. I always made sure my knees and feet were off the plywood and only on the collar ties.
      Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

      What do you mean, "almost looked real"? Dawn had been practicing for days.
      We sleep so well. The house is much warmer all over where the walls are drying out and of course has some insulation in the ceilings.
      Hope you are well :-) xx

      Thank you Helen. It is a little blowy to say the least. We have been without main electric since about 5 too, I think most of the west is without power. The little generator was ready and waiting. The range is lovely and warm and the fire in the bedroom is lit too.
      Thank you again.

  • @pitsnipe5559

    Ben, nice work my friend! Sure you’ll see a big difference in comfort with thar added insulation. Now, you need to be more careful. When you were coming down from the loft the first time and your foot hit the light fixture I darn near had a heart attack. 😮 oh to be young again.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry about that, it did look worse than it was and I did have the scaffold boards just below me. I wish I had been younger as after the 3rd time of climbing up I was shattered.
      The very same night we noticed the difference. The open fire in the bedroom was going so the wall on the landing was lovely and warm. The heat then started to move into our bedroom, which has no heat yet and gave that a little raise in temperature, which is nice.
      It is much much warmer here now though, up to a cracking 13 degrees Tuesday and plenty of rain for the water tanks due too :-)
      A big thank you to you as always :-)

    The insulation has proved beyond doubt to be a great success Ben.My heart was in my mouth watching you and Dawn over the staircase. I know you are both very careful, but I personally hate heights. Well done you two. Another brilliant job achieved Take care and God Bless xx

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, 100% difference and with a possible second layer on top of what is currently there, when we put up the "real" ceilings, the heat retention should be even greater.
      Yes, the stairs were a daunting thought for a little while until we came up with that solution and me just about tall enough to reach from the step ladders.
      A big thank you Collette for always watching and commenting ;-)

    Nor about Dawn's breakdancing skills. (Glad to see that she is alive, well, & bustin' a move.) Congratulations to the pair of you on your now fully snug home. 🥳

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Firstly a big thank you for the congratulations on finally getting there on our now, fully insulated ceilings, until we do them properly.
      We were very careful, chatted about the best way forwards to reach and get the job done safely. Ok, maybe me being up in the loft, on my knees, with 2ft gaps between collar ties whilst moving insulation around wasn't the safest, but it got the job done.
      They were some great dance moves she was breaking :-)
      Thank you for watching, commenting and making us laugh. See you soon :-)

      It really has made such a difference and we have storms coming today so we will see how well it performs in keeping the draughts at bay!
      Next? Well, for the last week or so, I've been clearing some of the land, so we can get that under control before spring sets in and that's been nice to do something a bit different. 😀

  • @joesture9991
    @joesture9991 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Brilliant, you will soon just need short sleeve t shirts and shorts with sun cream for the winter in the corner house? If you can think forward and consider how the building will feel through the use of an insulated external render, or an internal hemp plaster coating to keep every degree in the home. At a future point you can overlap the loft sheep insulation with a further layer of insulation with a Vapour Control Layer Intelligent membrane and let the membrane control the moisture breath-ability of the building. Had a very interesting CPD course on retrofit windows and a virtual walk through of a Irish / Polish company and how windows are selected and what can achieved at a budget value can exceed the UK Passivhaus standards.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We will need to pull the T shirts out for that then Joe lol. Maybe one day. We have discussed hemp plaster etc, but not rushing to pull what plaster we have on the walls down at the moment, as the camera clearly shows even normal lime plaster keeps in more heat than the bare stones inside.
      When you find out more Joe about the windows we would both be interested to learn more, especially the budget side lol. You know how to contact us :-)
      Thank you as always.

      @thecornerhouseproject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A huge difference isn't it. Yes, a lovely tool to see just how effective the insulation really is. There are areas which can be improved, but with our initial goal being able to use the house as a home for winter reached, we can wait until spring and start to replace temporary with permanent. This little gadget has already helped as we can now physically see a clear path of what needs to be done to improve for next winter.
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting :)

  • @SweetOne.
    @SweetOne. 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Well done! The panels on the ceilings look nice too. Temporary as they are they make such a difference.
    I don't know if this will work but, if you use one of the ceiling panels on the back of the front door with some insulation - put some thin studs on the back of the door squish in some insulation and screw the panel on - you will have a nice warm insulated front door until you can get a new one??
    Some nice thick lined curtains for the Windows and it will be snuggly warm in there.
    I bought some second hand polyester quilts (they are super light) and sewed one end over to put a rod through, I put a decorative bracket on either side of the window that can be used to hang many things - in the winter I put the quilts up by putting the rod on the brackets and I have ferns hanging from the brackets too all year round. I wrap the rods and quilts in plastic in warm weather and they live under the couch or under the beds depending on the rooms that need them lol You can get fancy with the quilts by sewing other curtains or sheets to them and cutting them up the middle and sewing the edges to make separate panels. They sell curtain rings with clips so you don't even need to sew a rod pocket you can just clip them to the quilts. The windows here are original from the 60's and let in so much cold and draft it's nuts. This quilt thing has worked really well, just make sure they go all the way to the floor - the cold air (draft) comes out the top and forces the warm air at the ceiling back down - our feet are much warmer :)

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Good afternoon Janie :-)
      That is a good idea with the front door. The only downside would be the loss of light that floods in. It seems the top of the door is the problem for heat loss where the glass is. Maybe some secondary glazing film if there is a big enough ridge for it to stick to.
      We now have curtains at every window which make a huge huge difference, but sadly the ones in the living room aren't quite long enough to reach the floor even at nearly 8ft long due to where they have to be hung :-(
      We are liking the quilt idea very much :-)
      It goes without saying.... thank you for watching and commenting :-)

    • @SweetOne.
      @SweetOne. 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Ben, you're very agile climbing into that small opening. I don't know if I would have been able to lift myself and wiggle in without getting stuck :) it's a lot colder where you are than what I would have expected. Nothing like here in Canada but definetly cold enough for insulating to be worthwhile.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi John. I used to be agile, now, at 50, it was just a matter of having too. I think I was up and down in total about 5 times, and each time got harder and harder to do lol.
      It isn't always that cold, it was a very cold spell but we have been told was down to -18 one winter. Just a couple of days later and it is going to be 13 degrees C on Tuesday. Plenty of very much needed rain the next few days, fill the tanks back up. We haven't really had rain for two weeks.
      We are pleased we had the insulation in place as it was very cold that night. The benefits can be really felt on the landing, the other side of the open fire roaring away.
      Of course the next word goes without saying John, but I will say it anyway..... Thanks :-)

  • @mocarra100
    @mocarra100 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Did you say that you were going to do the insulation above the panels that you're putting on the ceiling,? Don't you wish there was some way you could blow a bunch of cotton fluff or insulation through a tube up in there and fill that hole empty space up maybe I'm confused lol Bethesda nifty little I don't know what you call it camera thing that shows where you're losing heat. Can't wait for the next project! Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖 PS if I've asked questions that you've already said in this video it's because I'm in the middle of the video talking to you 😂

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hahaha, you can ask as many questions as you like Jackie, even if we answered them.
      Yes, the same as the other ceilings, we lay the insulation between the collar ties laid directly on top of the plywood.
      Blown insulation would be a lovely solution but we are not sure if it is available in sheep's wool insulation brand. The space in the loft needs the air to flow around keeping the space dry.
      Yes, the nifty little thing (Thermal Imaging Camera) is a brilliant tool. We were sent it to do a review on it but we have used it sooooo many times already, just so we can see where we need to improve things to keep the heat in.
      Thank you Jackie so much for always watching and commenting :-)

      After us having a chat through the options, one of which was to pre insulate the board and then raise it up, we decided it would be too tricky to try and line up the insulation with the collar ties. As they were different widths, it would have been a nightmare. So we stuck with what we knew worked.
