Nails, wool, electricity and peeping at our Irish stone farmhouse renovation.

  • So after removing the wooden ceiling strips of wood, it is time to cut off all of the nails that held them in place. At the same time, Dawn shows what sheep wool insulation we are using to fill the gaps around our temporary OSB flooring from the company Sheep Wool Insulation. While both things are going on, we have the electricity company outside digging a huge hole to fit our new pole. It was a busy day.

    hi folks, Wow, that company that uses wool for insulation is brilliant. at a time when they don’t know what to do with sheep wool anymore cause so much synthetic products are used and they don’t make clothes out of it very much. That’s a wonderful product to be made out of sheep wool and people can use it for every house that’s built or rehab if they just think about using a natural product, instead of synthetic product. Kudos to you guys for utilizing a natural product in your house. blessings 😊

      Thank you, yes it’s a great product to use for insulation. We were told about it by a commenter when we first started the work on the house and we are so pleased he told us about it as it works so well around the house for multiple different uses and yes you’re right with it now being used when it’s uses may have been dwindling, hopefully that helps sheep farmers too.

      Yes it feels quite fitting for the house! A friend mentioned it as a good insulation for these kinds of houses and for ease of blocking drafty areas it’s great! ❤️

    At some point when you're too tired to work, but you don't mind doing a video, I'm sure there are a lot of us out here who would love to know what took you guys to Ireland! I'm in Georgia of the US and have always wanted to go to Ireland because a good bit of my ancestry is there, along with England, Scotland and Wales. I think that's why I've always loved the Irish music, and the Appalachian music of the US because it came from Ireland. Anyway, just an idea for you! Love watching! I feel like I'm sharing a bit of your lives!

      Hahaha too tired to work..... Have you seen Dawn? Dawn would work 24 hours a day if I let her, she doesn't stop. My idea of a weekend off is exactly that... Do little jobs, easy jobs, or better still.... Do nothing. not Dawn hahahaa.
      I am sure we can do a video answering some questions, yours being one of them.
      You should come over. We have no relations here, no real history here either but we came over and love it, it is sooo different to what we are used to. An indoor shower would be nice though.
      There is a pub we go to and they usually have Irish music playing. Many a time Shazam gets used to find more info about the song.

    Well now at least you’ll have lots of rocks to fill in the gaps in the outbuildings with what they dug out for the electrical pole!! Great job on the sheep wool insulation as well!!😊❤

      Ooh my goodness they were huge that they were blasting through….its going to make digging French drains around the house a little….erm…tricky shall we say! The sheep’s wool insulation is great and has made such a difference around the house!

  • @neutonrenda2303

    Looks like you found the reason why the ground holds such much water, soil only a thin layer before you hit rock. 👍

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Spot on. We are sitting on a huge rock seam which, as you can see, is only a few feet down. Some of it sticks up in the road and front of our house too. We plan on a mini digger to scrape back to the rock below in the hope we can help with the drainage.

    Let there be light… lol. Y’all are moving right along. I’m impressed with the sheep’s wool insulation. 😮 I never knew such a thing existed. Yes, I’ve been living under a rock. 😂

      Haha…shhh…I’ll let you into a secret…a friend suggested the door and window filler…and I hadn’t heard of that one, so it’s not just you! Lol I’d read before about the loft and wall insulation somewhere.
      Oh it’s been a long time coming for the electric! Electrician should be here this coming week as well to get us wired and then hopefully in a few weeks we will connected! Yay! Can’t wait, we can get a proper fridge and everything!

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We don't think the ESB did either when they sent a toy digger to dig a hole. It didn't take them long to realise they needed a bigger digger and a bigger breaker. We didn't expect it to be one giant rock though, we pictured rocks... Ones you can dig up, not a rock you have to break first.

  • @Cuernavacachica02
    @Cuernavacachica02 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I was thinking while the guys were digging that it would be really cool if you could just use all that rock as a fence wall!! LOL Ben chose the best way to get rid of those nails! Love the music! See you next time!!

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is one rock on the top of the pile we would stand no chance of lifting, it is soooo heavy. There are some nice smaller ones though, I am sure they can join the ever growing pile Dawn is making as she clears more areas in the outbuildings and beyond, you know, in our weekends off hahahha.

  • @LewisC1944
    @LewisC1944 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    It look as if the house has stopped fighting you and that you really are winning. That soil and rocks would make a lovely rockery but not sure if it would be wet enough for firnary! XX

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We think you could be right Carol. Now the house realises we are not going to put plasterboard on every wall, rip out the stairs and replace all the doors, it has finally decided to let us help it with nice warm fires drying out the damp, getting rid of the wood worm which has been making it itch for over 25 years.
      Wet? We can only grow cacti here it is so dry, no way would a fern be seen growing along the ditches we have, or water logged moss so thick you can squeeze out a cupful of water hahahaha.
      We have quite a few fern growing wild and would probably cost £30+ in a garden centre.

    Watching this video which i was impressed in , wool insulation is impressive and natural and a nice find indeed.
    I did like how after a small hole was done outside for the pole it was scanned for hidden items and safety. Gap filling is a slow but getting it done lessens the air into that room.
    Great video of you doing plenty of stuffing and well done.

    Thanks for peeping Ben. That piece of machinery did a lot. I never thought about using wool as an insulator, but when we renovated our last home there was fabric and newspaper in one of the walls…wool would have been nicer to find. Not sure about finding it here in the states but now I’m going to look for it for our basement refinishing…thanks for the tip!

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, strangely with you saying about newspaper…we did find newspaper in the gaps when we removed the floorboards! The wool works really really well….we’ve probably increased the temperature in the kitchen a few degrees, we still have the windows and doors to do as well, so fingers crossed it will nice and warm in the coming winter! 🤞

    Suggestion.... lay ply on top of rafters temporarily with insulation laying on top of that. Only have to attach on side angle of roof. Ply and insulation eaily removed to use again. 😊

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a good suggestion, thank you! We will be looking at that in the coming week or so, so will see if that would work because the ease of being able to take it down and reuse would be great 😊

    • @OfficialWheelo

      We much prefer to use screws as they have less physical impact on the poor old house. You need to remember we are fixing things OMG. But yes, once they are down again in the future we will be using them elsewhere.

      Oh yes, it has been a long time and to be honest we hate the generator with all of its noise in such a peaceful area. At present it is the other side of the out buildings with some plywood around it to try and make it seem quieter.
