- Dr. Peter Kreeft-a leading Catholic apologist, philosophy professor, and author of over 100 books-delivered the commencement address at Franciscan University of Steubenville on May 14, 2022. Dr. Kreeft told graduates to be on the lookout for 10 lies of contemporary culture, urging them to instead “go forth and preach the truth, the good news in both word and deed.”

5. You need education in critical thinking (negative skepticism toward anything that claims to be truth) 10:52
6. We must be tolerant of everything except intolerance (all peace is good and all war is bad) 11:50
7. If you want peace, seek justice 13:27
8. Keeping an open mind is the supreme good 14:38

10. Freedom is the end rather than a means 16:29

A man of truth Dr. Kreeft. Therefore not surprisingly, aligned to God- the creator of truth , light and knowledge. The more we attach ourselves to The Word of God the more we see the lies of this deceptive selfish world,-satan's kingdom. The Bible- handbook how to choose good over evil and get to our Heavenly Birthright. People like Dr Kreeft help keep us on the right path. Thank you good soul.

Very good words indeed. I'm a Protestant and always enjoy the wise thoughts of many a Catholic brother. I would add one more lie (it is perhaps implied in some of the 10 he mentioned): You are your own person. Paul reminds us in1 Cor. 6:19 that we are NOT our own. The lie that we belong only to ourselves is pervasive. Indeed I struggle with it! Anyway, be blessed all.
This man along with C.S. Lewis changed my life... If ever I have the good fortune of making it to heaven one day, it will be - in no small part - due to Peter Kreeft. Thanks for this speech. I needed to hear this at this time.

I'm not an educated graduate, but Peter Kreeft held my full attention with this pithy presentation. I have always considered those ten points to be dangerous and now we are reaping what they have sown.
Dr Kreft is a legend! Started reading him in 1992. The man helped me think properly after four years of undergrad state secularist indoctrination.
Erudition, salted with pith and puckish humor, based on humble self understanding, make for an irresistible advertisement for Truth!

He was my professor at Boston College. Any of his many books are well-worth the read. If you're not Catholic, warning - if you're a reasonable person and read his books, you will become Catholic.

What a great speech - there is so much packed into a few minutes. Need to listen to this at least a dozen times to take it all in.
Many times I've worried for the many I thought would be hurt by the 'You can be anything you want to' notion'. Was pleased to see it come up as number one here. Soldiered on despite waning warm responses. Many will come away having to deal with a thorn that signifies hard truth.

What an awesome speech ! So true. That speech should be given at all commencements. A beautiful and thoughtful gift to be given to the graduates.
Kreeft's emphasis on "essential nature" is great. His references to Apple and Microsoft are outstanding. I wonder what the students in his audience thought, since they have grown up in the era when computers & smartphones are in everyone's hands, not just a small tiny few who are technogeeks, or going back further, no such things in anyone's hands. These students have grown up in an era when Jobs and Gates were lauded as heroes and geniuses, rather than the con men they were/are.
He's also bang-on about satire. 20 years ago I wrote satire. Today, I can't do it. Reality has become so inverted that satire can't find a place to aim. I'd suggest this hasn't happened without conscious plan by people who operate entertainment and "news" media businesses, and their lackeys who hold "elected" (ha ha ha, more like fixed) offices.

Could of wrapped up the whole thing with the ending quote for a one-liner commencement address.

The Apple in Apple Computers was meant to signify the apple that fell from the tree onto Isaac Newton's head. Their very first company logo illustrates this clearly in a woodcut-style illustration.

Very inspiring speech.
Tried my best to summarize the 10 lies as follows:
Lie #1: "You can be anything you want to be."
Lie #2: "You're the most important person in the universe."
Lie #3: "The world needs you."
Lie #4: "You, in your capacity for creative thinking, are the creator of truth, able to create a new reality."
Lie #5: "You, with your power of critical thinking, may tear down anything that claims to be truth if it doesn't fit the truth you create."
Lie #6: "All peace is good and all conflict or adversity is evil."
Lie #7: "Peace can only be attained by demanding justice, not forgiveness, toward your adversaries-justice as you define it."
Lie #8: "Tolerance is the supreme good."
Lie #9: "All you need is love, certainly not truth or discernment."
Lie #10: "Freedom is an end in itself: freedom from responsibility, freedom to do whatever you please."
