It's really subtle, but when Olive sings " I think he takes out on me what he wants to take out on you", her mother turns to look at her father and glares at him. It's a really good move and small enough to convey the emotion without taking the focus away from the scene. Well done!

I literally did that at an audition yesterday. We sang the whole song and we were all in character, so anything went (even if we all barely knew each other) I think that that touch of a glare and the mom feeling guilty for not answering Olive’s letters. This song is just so beautiful and sad at the same time.

High School huh...sounds more like Broadway to me. I am so impressed! My son is singing this song (with different words) to his girlfriend as a proposal for marriage. The word he has to spell is "Marriage". My wife and I are singing the other two parts. Should be interesting. Thanks for the great rendition. You're through to the next round.

Holy crap their voices are incredible
This is literally the best version I have seen on You-Tube! First off the vocals are obviously amazing. The acting is what gets me. I believe you guys have perfectly captured what this song is about. The fact that olive never looks at the parents is amazing. I love the way she "sees" them without actually looking at them.I also enjoy that everyone is in character the whole time. It really adds to the whole song. At 5:15 ughhh the fact that you all blend perfectly is breath taking. I have nothing bad to say about this!

Everything about this is perfect! Olive and her mother have BEAUTIFUL vocals, and dear goodness the father is beautiful o.o Very few male performers I've seen sing those riffs have been less than impressive, but this was phenomenal :)
Whoa. I had to come read the description and comments because I couldn't believe this was done by high school students. This amount of talent at this level is amazing. Absolutely incredible. Go you guys!
Listened to the Broadway version first and then this one but to tell the truth I like this version more.

I think the saddest part of this song is when Olive spells the word correctly, and Panch confirms it correct, it is almost like he is pinning Olive down to what she is unfortunately dealing with. This song is general is very ominous, with Rona normally singing as Olive’s mom, considering that she is the one that Olive focuses on in order to call her dad. The song also ends in a major key, almost like there is a way out of this sort of fantasy Olive has during the whole song. Panch is like the all-knowing character, quite represented in specifically this song, almost like Marcy Park’s Jesus has possessed Panch, lol.

I listened to other versions and I sat there with no emotion. but when I listened to this version it caused me to completely lose it and start bawling.....
There were only three time i cried when i heard this song. The first time i was the show. The first time I heard the broadway version. And the first time I listened to your BREATH TAKING voices!

The ma I have Oh god this need is Olive trying to bring out the theme of her father being abusive towards her to her mother: "I have this need" about asking her what to do, the "Oh god" being a pause because of the graveness of said subject.

You must have seen some crappy performances then. This is alright. Pretty pitchy in some places and they didn't breathe in the right places.
Lori Minor You need to stop. They obviously put some work into this. I love this rendition of the song. Who cares if they don't have the correct breathe marks. It is up to the vocal director to give them breathe marks in different places. Not up to you. Also they were not pitchy. They were in character. So. Bye Felicia. #SorryNotSorry
Been in a collegiate production as Rona and Olive's mom.... Pretty sure I know the pitches. They were pitchy. End of story.
Lori Minor Your still Rude. End of story. From a directors stand point they are completely fine. They are in character hence the changes in pitches, and tone quality. Musical Theatre is it's own art form no one production is perfect or is the same. Part of the emotion of the song is going a little pitchy at points. I have seen professional productions of Putnam were actor/actresses who have been performing for years go pitchy. You are playing 12 year olds at a spelling bee not Rose in 'Gypsy', only Rona (the overbearing soprano) has a sort of classical placement in her voice, and even that varies from production to production. Also this is high school not a collegiate production. Also I have been in Putnam as Barfee (with an accent aigu), and they do NOT include breathe marks in the MTI score. Also there is no set standard as to how this show should be performed. If they want to change the show they can because they have the rights. Every show is subject to change, and to show hatred toward ANY form of theatre really shows your disrespect towards other performers and the theatre community. You are not the one to judge. They did a FABULOUS job for a high school production of Putnam, and if you don't see the true meaning of the 'I Love You Song' and just see notes on a page than I feel bad for you. Shine Bright.

I don't like to talk about myself but my family is extremely musical. My grandfather played on Broadway for the original cast of Hello Dolly and the original cast of A Chorus Line, as well as subbing in for many other Broadway shows. Granted, he didn't sing, he played many instruments. However, he has passed on such an incredible talent to my family, and my brother and I were fortunate enough to be born with perfect pitch, which I actually consider both a blessing and a curse. When someone does not play or sing the right pitch, I can sometimes get an extremely bad headache (depending on severity) which is where the curse comes in. My point is, given my "gifted" ability, I did not find any incredibly noticeable notes off pitch. Of course there were some spots, not everyone can have a perfect performance every time like you, but the overall performance of this number was absolutely spectacular. I prefer listening to this group of singers rather than the OBC recording. Also, judging by the background, this was just a rehearsal, so they probably weren't on their A-game with acting and possibly even singing. These performers did a fantastic job.
