As someone who is studying theatre and ASL to make theatre more accessible for the D/deaf community, watching this brought tears to my eyes. This is one of my favorite songs and shows. Bravo!

The fact that she closes her eyes at 5:05 feels especially important *because* everything is signed. It's like she's trying to block it all out by refusing to even look at their hands.

Alright stop me if i’m reading into this too much but a detail I really like about this performance (besides actually everything lmao) is how frustrated Olive seems when she goes to spell ‘chimerical’. It’s like she KNOWS she can’t have it, like she’s snapping herself out of a fantasy she’s had a million times before. I love how intense this Olive’s performance is- she literally never stops acting!!
I agree. Such a different take on that moment. Hits harder, I think.

This may be the most well song version of this song I've ever heard, and the fact that they were signing it the whole time as well makes it easily the most impressive rendition. Great job!

Not gonna lie, I'm crying over how wonderfully integrated the asl is. It isn't just showing the signs, it is putting the feelings behind them as well
This is one of the most beautiful things ive ever seen! The singing is flawless and the signing brings the emotion to a whole other level and is singed so clearly! Im so proud and honored to have watched this!

imagine if there was a full deaf production of spelling bee that would be so amazing like this video is already beautiful and stunning but think about how even more fantastic it would be with deaf actors and their voices and you could do so much with the staging, especially since there are already implications of abuse in this song, they could be even more prominent in a deaf west production

the different instruments each of the voices could play (based on my own personal opinion and how i interpret the character):
-voice of olive: violin
-voice of william: bass or some kind of jazz instrument
-voice of marcy: piano
-voice of logainne: flute or clarinet
-voice of leaf: trumpet or guitar
-voice of chip: tbh for this one i don’t rlly know but maybe some kind of percussion or guitar
and then i think the adults should be played by hearing actors (similar to how in deaf west spring awakening, melchior and hanschen were played by hearing actors) or if they are played by deaf/hard of hearing actors they shouldn’t play instruments imo
as you can tell i’ve clearly thought a lot about this
alex time low alex time low okay DUDE AND LIKE THE RE-ENACTMENT OF OLIVE’S PARENTS’ STORY WOULD BE C H I L L I NG. the lighting too?? Like uh yES plus it would make sense for olive to be deaf because two hearing parents raising a deaf child with little to no resources would make it even harder for her parents to accept how much she’s trying to reach out to them. Maybe loggaine is deaf and desperately trying to prove that she won’t fall into the stereotype of being uneducated (again the whole “parents/deaf children connection relationship thing), and thus feels even more pressured by her dads to succeed. Leaf too- feeling disconnected from his siblings because he’s Hard of Hearing or even profoundly deaf. William and Marcy might be hearing because 1. William/olive relationship would be so much deeper, seeing William make efforts to interact with her despite not knowing much sign and 2. Marcy and William having a clear advantage over the others in the way that their upbringings would value a large written English vocabulary (Marcy would know ASL tho because she speaks 6 languages, let’s be real, she just WOULD). Your comment made me Think Very Deeply like woah thank you. DWSA is a masterpiece anyway so it’s gr8 to see another person appreciating ASL in the theatre community. Thoughts? Any ideas about what the Voices would wear/how they would interact with their deaf counterparts?

This is my favorite choreography of the song I've seen, the singing and the acting are beautiful and the really clever use of ASL only enhances it.

I just got cast as as Logianne in a production of spelling bee and I get to sign a couple lines of the opening song. This is amazing! I started learning sign language before I got cast so I am so so excited to be able to do it onstage!

i played wendy once (peter pan), and i didn’t really know what to do with my hands when she was storytelling, so i decided to sign when i was story telling. because of that i always get emotional when watching others do it because it was so important to me when i did it. :)
