Bobby, I want to thank you for really showing me how amazing waterfowl hunting really is. I've always wanted to try duck hunting, but all the rules and the amount of gear always kept me from committing. Instead, I forced myself to become a deer hunter and though I do like it, I never really "got into it". I've been watching your videos for almost 2 years now and everytime I see ducks or geese lock in and land in your decoys it gets me going. Well yesterday morning, my stepbrother and I finally did it. We went out to try duck hunting for the very first time. I was up all night excited and watching your videos of how to set up spreads and how to call. (Even though I've already seen them multiple times) The morning started off rough, we didn't get the spot we wanted to because it was the opening day of deer rifle and I was not trying to be moving around in tall grass without orange with other hunters around. So we went to another spot. We had a couple flocks fly by but none never committed to the decoys. I began questioning if it was actually gonna be worth it or if devoting ducks only happened on the tv shows and youtube. About 9am came around and we thought about quitting. Instead we went to the spot we wanted originally which I had scouted for the past week and showed good sign of ducks and geese. There was no other trucks in the parking lots so we figured it would be safe to try duck hunting there. It took us forever to get set up because we had to haul everything at least a good 300 yards through the trees. Wd came up on a small body of water that had tall grass and was a little over knee high deep water. Set up my dozen decoys and my dove mojo (didn't want to commit to a duck mojo if I didn't like waterfowl hunting) and I started calling with short bursts of quacks. About 10 minutes later i turn around to see 3 ducks flying overhead. And within second they came around and began locking up. My heart started racing and the excitement grew. I looked and saw the lead duck, green head, and bright orange feet. I couldn't believe it. Wings cupped and the other two followed the leader. It was the most amazing sight I have ever seen. And then for what felt like forever, right before the lead duck hit the water, I yelled "take em!" And me and my step brother rose up and managed to down 2 gorgeous drake mallards. The first thing both of us did was check for bands lol. But after we sat down with our first ducks, I knew I was hooked. I couldn't stop smiling. It was just like all the videos I see on youtube that get me excited. We didn't see anymore after that, but since then all I can think about is getting out again. If it wasn't for youd videos I don't think I would have ever even tried duck hunting. Hopefully one day I can meet you in real life and thank you in person. But for now, thank you Bobby. Without you, I would have never of experienced ducks "doing it dirty" in real life

Bobby, when you’re hunting a river, y’all need to get on the downstream side of a sandbar or island where there is no current. That’s where the birds want to be. To much work fighting the current. They tend to land in the current and swim into the slack water.

Here in the tidal marshes of CT we use a half a brick with 12-15 feet of decoy line. When you drop the brick into the water it unwinds til it hits the bottom. Also automatically adjusts when the tide comes in

For the river we put a additional swivel on the carabiner end, also have three spreaders for jerk rig. Place the Texas rig decoys on a trott line and anchor up stream with window weights. So we take two trott lines with 12 decoys each, and place them @15' apart. Then hook the spreaders to a additional trott line and place just up stream enough to make a u shaped spread, with mojo in the hole.

    First off......
    Absolutely love your videos!
I grew up on the river, and this is my first year actually duck hunting #hooked! So naturally I am attracted to the river waters. I've shot a few Wood ducks in warmer weather, but they have migrated on. Since the cold moved in I've only really been able to find mallards on the river (which is cool with me!). I've just been able to float so far and have collected a couple Mallards. Looking forward to a first river sit! I think the river scenery is by far the most beautiful hunting possible!
Personally would love to see more river hunts, but more importantly keep making videos!

We hunt rivers here in Northwest Arkansas when it gets bitter cold and all the ponds freeze up. If everything is thawed the birds scatter, but when it gets really cold the moving water is the only water that stays open. When that happens it usually gets nuts!!!!!😁

A good tip is if the river is wider it is shallower then the narrow parts. And shallow is fast except on sand bars. The weights get really big strap weights and twist them into a circle. Your decoys were perfect however that Frick in flapper man putting flappers in your decoys is a huge nono on rivers, I keep saying it but the large flocks will key off of the flapper, you want them out of there vision by the Time they land or they will flair. Very pretty spot bet that was a lot of fun. Haha you got Texas rigs on your river decoys. Man I'll let you in on it. Twine or rubber line, I use rubber so I'll go from there. Take 10 feet of rubber line cut off. Put the end through the decoy double it and tie a overhand knot with both ends. Then put your 12oz strap weight on it, then put on a plastic decoy line crimp, then take the other end double it and tie a overhand knot in both. There you have it. Put the weight on the decoy pull the crimp up and use the knot to hang the decoy on a caribener. When deploying, take decoy off caribener, pull crimp down to water depth take off weight and twist into a circle and drop in water. If you are in a boat replace rubber line for twine and add a Shackel to the mid line by running the running line around the keel. Picking up wrap decoy line around the keel and wrap weights. Deploy by unwinding after that.

We tie a long dark green rope to a 10lb lead weight, then tie the deeks to the rope. Then, deployment is nothing more than one shot put and they all get pulled right across the river for good visibility, and it dramatically improved the effectiveness of those decoys which used to just sit near the bank. Now they are right across the river.

  • @lumpy2181
    @lumpy2181 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Bobby, you can make some one ended long line setups to hunt the river. Get a 5lb kayak anchor, run ~20-30 yds of decoy line from it, attach your decoys with drop rigs like the big water diver hunters use. Makes for a quick set and pickup too.

Use a corn cobb mold for your lead weights. You can either throw the weight into the mud if you're shallow or step it into the mud if you're a little deaper. That longer weight, straight up and down in the mud, won't budge in current nearly as bad as a round weight

hey bud loving all the waterfowl videos. I get my go pro batteries to last by keeping them in a case with a hand warmer until I am ready to use it. Better yet have a go pro in the case as well it will not freeze up nearly as fast due to already being warm and the battery inside. You may have a little fogging of the lens at first though. switch out the a go pro and battery into the warm case with a hand warmer each time you need to to keep the camera and batteries warmer longer.

To keep your decoys from floating off in rivers with heavy current that works best is cheap. Get paper cups and fill with concrete and pea gravel, before it dries cut up clothes hangers in 3 inch pieces. Then bend in a U shape and stick in the concrete before it hardens. I hunt the ms river and works everytime. 20$ and you have 2 dozen weights.

Bigger weight like a kayak weight or jerk rig weight and run a rope like a long line. You can put spreaders connected to it or just a decoy. I run 4-6 decoys per line and depending on how many decoys you want to run would be how many lines you need.

Great video per usual Bobby! You should check out slotted food bowls if you think Fred eats too fast out of his bowl. I got one for my dog and works great. Also maybe Gunner kennels will do a black Friday sale be on the lookout!

When you set out the decoys use the lojo pole to shove the weight in the soil.

I hunt on big water in NC and we use mushroom weights and pyramid weights out here even in 30 mph wind and they don’t budge. The weight of the weight also matters tho.

Bobby u need to get mushroom weights because the dig in better and are heavier. It's what we use for open water diver hunting on the east coast.

River is all i hunt in Central nebraska, platte river. I make my own weights out of lead from tires, melt them in an old muffin pan drill a hole and that decoy wont go anywhere. have a dozen or so of those with dozen you can put shallow water your golden.
